This is a good store: it's in the heart of downtown Denver (which makes it a bit hard to find), large store with plenty of choices, and it's reasonably priced. The service is lacking, and it is in a bit of a shady part of town.
This is an update (3-12-2011). Construction is going on in the space where the old building was...a bit tight to navigate.
Beer selection is on the south side of the store, an L-shape cooler with some warm shelving opposite them. Lots of six packs and twelve packs.
The cold bomber selection is a bloody mess. The doors dedicated to them are few and the bottles are scattered, some slots empty. It was really depressing seeing none of the stock faced. Horrible. The warm selection is a bit better, the import selection isn't all that great.
Service? Most were outside smoking I think. Seeing that the shelves were ugly, not much service in the beer portion.
I suspect this place concentrates on wine and drink mixers, perhaps single cans, too.
Good place if you're in the neighborhood, but not great a destination.

Argonaut was a little hard to find for an outsider in a new territory, but I think the city was a little hard to handle with streets going everywhere and having to go through the busiest part of downtown. Once I found Argonaut I was quite happy because it had a bunch of the beers I was looking for. It carried quite a few local craft beers in 6-pack, but it did have some of the bigger brews in the cooler over near the wine section.
I was focused on Avery and picking up a couple Great Divide picks. I was happy to find all of them and then some. The only thing I was not happy about was the lack of single bottle selection for a lot of the other brewers in CO and around the area. You could buy all the 6-packs you wanted, but couldn't mix-and-match. For someone who was having to fly out, this presented itself as a problem.
Argonaut is relatively close to Coors Field and Flying Dog. It is listed as one of the better locations on this site...I just wish I had more time to check out some of the other places. Eh, even though I didn't, I still went home with some pretty good loot.

One thing that a lot of people don't know is that Argonaut Liquors is most of the time it's a liquor reps. only account. That means that you have the opportunity to talk with someone that knows the ins and outs of your favorite past time. I have been exposed to beers that I would have never have tried before. They also get the limited release beers that other liquor stores don't get (I have a barley wine from Boulder Beers that I'm saving for a special occasion).
What goes good with beer...liquor of course. They also have the kind liquor selection. I just picked up a 1929 Don Julio to sip on with the buddies. Good Stuff.

Right near the capitol in downtown Denver, Argonaut proudly displays its banner as the Reader's Choice winner for who knows how many years running as the best liquor store in Denver. Given the quality of their competition, I'm not sure how they pulled this off.
The entire store feels cluttered and a little dusty. There are a good number of beer fridges in the back, with a decent though not exceptional selection of craft brews (I should mention that I was excited to find an early sixer of the '06 Avery Karma here, when several other stores I tried didn't yet have it). Outside of the fridges, the few other beers that they stocked seemed to be placed willy-nilly throughout the store.
When I asked if they had any remaining bottles of Avery Mephistopheles, they checked their computers, said they had two bottles left, but then the stock guys couldn't find them anywhere...again, disorganization seems to be the touchstone of this place.
Take a pass on this place.

Unassuming from the outside- Location also deceptive- This didn't seem to be the type of place I'd usually seek out for shopping. Once inside, I was impressed with the wine and port selection I passed on the way to the coolers lining the back wall. Coolers hold a wide selection of Colorado craft beers, some imports, a few Belgians, and a few "other American craft brews."
Staff was very friendly and helpful, offering boxes as my selections grew. Even the security guard asked me if I was finding everything I needed. I tested him by asking about a brew I knew wasn't scheduled for release for a couple weeks and he correctly told me it wasn't out yet...

Okay, I was a bit nervous when I pulled into the parking lot. The grounds of this 1970's building looked a bit untended and across the street is an adult book store. A couple rough looking guys walked out with a bottle in a brown bag. Well, I'm here I'm going in. Well, inside was much a relief. The entring door deposits you in an amazing selection of wines. I was here to pick up a few local beers, so I walked right past rows and rows of wine, then a couple rows of liquor before reaching the beer section all the way on the other side of the building. I wandered up and down a couple aisles, and was dissappointed that they didn't have a singles section. The entire back walk was lined with coolers, and I correctly guessed that they have singles in the coolers. A nice selection of Colorado beers, a decent import section, but pretty much lacking on other US craft breweries. Prices were reasonable (a bit more than Liquor Mart in Boulder) and check-out did not take very long. Definitely a place worht stopping if you are in the brewery part of Denver (not far from the Rockies baseball stadium) and want to take a few bottles home.

I miss Denver. Every Friday I would stop by Argo's downtown on the way home from work. It was when I lived in Denver that I learned to be a beer freak. Before moving there I was a "whatever's cheap" kinda guy. But after walking into Argo's, a veritable Wal Mart of beers, I was forever changed. Granted I have probably not travelled as much as many, Argonaut's has the largest beer selection I have ever seen. A truly amazing selection in a truly amazing beer state, Colorado. Most weekends when I would stop by there would be representatives from one or more of the many local microbrewers there to answer questions about their products. Now I grew up in the South, Alabama to be exact, and this is a completely foreign, yet fascinating concept to me. The only gripe I have (and it's minor) is that Argonaut's is located in a fairly seedy part of Denver on East Colfax. So, you often have some panhandlers and such around.
Although we have a liquor store with a decent selection in my new home of Savannah, GA, I have yet to find a liquor store that compares with Argonaut's. Only Applejack's on the westside of Denver comes close but their focus is more on wine.
If you love beer and you are in the Denver area to live or visit, check it out! Hey, they even have their own website at www.argonautliquor.com.
Update: I don't live in Savannah anymore. Back in Bama as of 2006.
