Poured into 10oz goblet. Poured a hazy pale yellow color, with just a thin cap of white head that had very low retention and lacing. Not the big, pillowey, long-lasting and sticky head I expect (and love) in the style.
The aroma hit all the expected notes, grains, spice and yeast, of the style, but nothing really took control. Taste-wise, something was missing. All the things that should have been there were there, but it didn't come together like it should have. The flavors were soft, not bold and crisp (except for a sharp alcohol bite that shouldn't have been there, given that this is on the low side of the scale for the style) like I look for, the taste was bland and harsh at the same time.
The body was very much on the the thin side of typical for the style. Drinkability was not very pleasant, it was almost a chore to finish the bottle. Overall, a disappointment. Avery makes some very good beers and their White Rascal is among the best, and my favorites, of the Wit style. I expected much more from them in a Tripel. Take a pass if you see this one.

22oz bottle. Pours hazy straw yellow with a big fluffy white head that retains well and laces the glass.
The aroma is stinky musty yeast, bready malts and some bananas.
The flavor is sweet bready malts with some spices and bananas with a bit of a hoppy finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with low carbonation.
Overall, an OK tripel. I liked this better on tap. This seems too sweet with too much banana.

22 ounce bottle - $7.98 at Sherlock's in Kennesaw, Georgia.
Appearance: Pours a hazed, yellow toned body with a smallish, brief head of near white suds.
Smell: A nose smelling of light pale malts, wheat included, some husky hints and additional notes of peach/pear, ineffusive lemon, florals, faint spice, but a big pop of liquor.
Taste: Ultra pale maltiness with grainy unrefined wheat followed by a big pinch of sugar. Some orchard fruitiness, though essentially nothing in the way of banana esters. Small hint of citrus, too. Minor phenolic spiciness. Quick into the taste, there's a sizable bite of alcohol that's nearly solvent in character and fairly bitter. Remains sweet, sugary until the warm finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium carbonation. Some sticky chewiness present.
Overall: Nineteen is just too sweet and too boozy for me and a bit coarse, much the way I was at nineteen. Maybe it's simply Avery really lowering their anniversary beer expectations to completely blow us away for the 20th anniversary release. Crafty, them Avery boys.

From Tacoma Boys. Very blonde color, clear with a bit of chill haze. Thin white head leaves some decent bubbles. Fruit and yeast scents. Apple, maybe a little coriander. Slightly sweet bitter and acidic taste. White grape. Dull finish. Slight metallic notes too. Body is very thin for me. Booze not well masked either. For the most part, the beer fits a tripel but is just not a real good one. Drinkable but for this style not a great one.

Cloudy, golden color. No head. Well carbonated when drinking. S: Sweet yeasts, white wine, boozy because of the wine smell. T: fruity with peach or apricot jam. The finish is metallic or bitter and then you taste chewy white bread. The alcohol taste is unbalanced with the other flavors, which I have not picked up on in Avery’s other Belgian brews. I like it, but I would rather pick up one of their other Belgian beers. In other words, for an anniversary beer, it was not that exciting.

Pours a pale copper color with a massive, foamy head. Smell is of yeast, apple, sugar, and bread. I let it warm a bit before taking a sip, and was pleasantly surprised by the taste. It was a little hoppier than I had expected, but not in a bad way. I'd have this beer again, for sure.

On tap at Hay Merchant in Houston, TX
A: Pours a clear yellow color. A two finger white head forms and recedes in a minute to nothing. Not much lace either.
S: Phenolic yeast and peppery spice up front. I get a whiff of sulfur that lingers around. Also a metallic twang.
T: Follows the nose with yeast and peppery spice. Phenolic and sweet. A lingering sulfur and mineral flavor that is slightly metallic.
M/D: A medium body that is crisp and effervescent. The alcohol is noticeable, and makes this a slow sipper.
I don't know why, but I always seem to get a mineral and sulfur character in most of Avery's Anniversary offerings that I am not a fan of. Not something I particularly want to come back to.

2012 Avery Anniversary Edition Belgian-Style Tripel. Nineteen. 22 fl oz brown glass bottle with foiled-over pressure cap served into a La Chouffe tulip in me gaff in high altitude Castle Rock, Colorado. Expectations are above average. Reviewed live.
Served straight from the refrigerator and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.
A: Pours a three finger white colour head of slight cream, nice thickness, and good retention for the high ABV. Colour is a dull hazy yellow. Nontransparent. Nontranslucent.
Sm: Lemon citrus esters, biscuity yeast, clean malts, hints of cream, hints of wheat (?), and a light floral hop aroma. Mild to moderate in strength.
T: Lemon citrus rides nicely alongside the backgrounded citrusy hop aroma atop the clean malt foundation with wheat tinges. Some cream underlies, but ideally should open the flavours. Nicely balanced and put together, if a bit watery. Not particularly complex, but there's some subtlety here. The ABV trickles in a bit on the backend. The yeast is too understated.
Mf: Too watery. Smooth and wet, with some light coarseness through the climax - and aptly so. Adequately carbonated. Fairly light on the palate.
Dr: I wouldn't call it refreshing, but it's nice to drink. I wouldn't want to quaff it, but it's drinkable for the ABV. A nice little tripel from Avery, but nothing I'd have again or recommend. I do like it, but it's far from special or unique.

A: purs a hazy yellow with two fingers of white head that fades into a thin ring with little lacing.
S: Belgian spices with candy sugar and sweet light fruits dominate the nose with hints of citrus.
T: spices here as well with notes of citrus, candy sugar, and fruits. A strong yeasty character brings up the finish with a slight bitterness.
M: medium-light body with medium carbonation, this beer is a bit watery, but not too bad.
O: a decent tripel overall, though a little bland and undercarbonated for me.

Pours a bit thin... lacking much of a head and no real lacing, a slight suggestion of alcohol legs but that's about it. A smidgen of beading.
Nose is nice and clean. Banana, clove, mango, syrupy fruit. Some nice yeast presence as well.
Bready, peppery yeast, more banana, and a strange alcohol character that I wouldn't expect from the ABV. The taste unfortunately suffers from the lack of body.
Overall, worth trying but not much else. I'd love to try this one on tap sometime.

I poured this into a tulip style glass. The coloring is a little darker than straw with very minimal head coming off. There is a lot of stuff floating in this beer, which you would expect from the bottle conditioning.
Off the top I get pretty strong banana esthers and the sour presence. It smells pretty good, but there isn't a lot of balance there.
The flavor is pretty strong. It has the elements of the tripel from the yeast. You get a lot of flavor in each sip, and it seems pretty over-whelming.
This is a decent tripel, but I think I would go pick up a Unibroue trippel in the future.

22 oz bottle from Total Wine in NoVA. Bottled April 2012.
Appearance: Hazy dark yellow, like concentrated urine. Soapy white head lasts 10 seconds and leaves no lacing-- at all.
Smell: Spicy phenolic yeast notes. Pear, apple, much less banana. Bready malt. Good smelling tripel.
Taste: Very yeast driven and spicy. Plenty sweet, not too much though. Not enough bright fruity esters to really round this out. Very little alcohol heat in this one.
Mouthfeel: I think this bottle may be a bit undercarbed. Other that some sweet stickiness on the finish, this beer is pretty boring in the mouth. None of the creaminess and silkiness that really good tripels have.
Overall: I think this may have been better fresh, and I wouldn't have aged it 8 months. I bought it a few weeks ago on an endcap at Total Wine and just assumed it was new. Oh well.

$7.99 for a 22oz bomber @ BevCo. Brewed with malted barley, malted wheat, flaked oats, belgian candy sugar, hops and an infamous belgian yeast strain (Duvel?). Bottled May 2012. OG=17p, 8.23% ABV.
Pours out to a cloudy pale straw golden (unfiltered, but also cloudy from the wheat and oats), forming a soapy bone white head with excellent retention and solid sheets of lace. Moderate carbonation, ~2.5 carbs. The aroma is very nice..the requisite belgian tripel phenolics and tropical fruit...pears, bananas, pineapple. Mouthfeel is crisp with a medium body and finishing very dry with an overly tart acidity. The taste is a recap of the aroma...plenty of pils malt character, the candi sugar is right where it should be...not cloying or cidery...the bitterness is quite firm (again, with the Duvel) and lingers in the aftertaste...actually a bit firm for my tastes and for the style. Bready and peppery in the finish. There is a green leafy and lemony hoppiness that really shouldn't be here and kinda throws the beer out of balance...they must not have aged their hops. As it sits and warms, it definitely gets better.
As a beer, this is decent. As a triple, it doesn't really fare very well. Honestly, I wouldn't buy it again.

A cloudy yellow beer with almost no head. It smells delicious though I am a fan of Tripels. The normal arrangement of citrus/corriander to my nose. It also has a nice flavor though the multistoried to overpower some of the subtleties. The mouthful is full and spicy. Overall-god but could definitely be better.

A: Poured a glowing, cloudy yellow with a small white cap, some bubbles but the lacing is nice
S: Ligth citrus notes with bubblegum, pepper, wheat and cloves
T: Initially I get some light heat with yeast, bubblegum and spice. Midway I get some wheat more cloves and the finish rounds out with some spice, fruits, light booze, wheat and a lingering but light bitterness and a dry finish
M: Well carbonated, medium to big body. The more it sits on palate the boozier, sharper and more astringent it taste
O: Not a bad Tripel. I probably would not drink it again but was happy to try it. The only recommendation I would make is losing some of the finishing heat and lingering bite

A - hazy pale yellow, an inch of white foam that fades quickly leaving some lacing
S - quite aromatic, yeast, spice, floral, honey
T - Belgian yeast, spice (Coriander/clove/pepper), apples, a grape Pinot Noir tart note more than the typical sweet
M - heavier and more syrupy than a typical Belgian, not the expected effervescence
O - a very enjoyable beer, the spice components give it more a Wit quality than a typical Triple

Poured from the bottle into a tulip glass.
A real nice creamy and bright white head is made off the pour, which sits on this real nice glowing yellow orb of lemon. Opaque with some faint rising pinhead streams. Real nice light yellow glow, good looking tripel.
Nose is classic Belgian candy, soft malts and an almost dense pear fruit smell. Sweetness is dialed down just a bit, with a good semi-dry action. Airy and slightly clove comes out.
Palate seems quite spicy, with a big dry finish which seems unexpected. A nearly hop bitter comes forward in the front with a somewhat buttery palate. Carbonation comes out with a real sharp club soda and tonic water action, but disapates very quickly. Some creamyness gets in but the finish rolls a good amout of gas and left over dioxide sensations.
Overall not that bad, kind of interesting, but no complaints.

A: This poured a hazy light gold with moderate white head.
S: It smelled like grassy hops and sour Belgian yeast, with some sweet candi sugar and lavender.
T: It tasted like bitter grassy and waxy hops, with some sour Belgian yeast and sweet candi sugar. It had a clean and bitter aftertaste with a little alcohol.
M: It was thin with moderate carbonation. Light body.
D: This was a decent tripel but nothing special. The scent and taste were good, but the body was a little weak. The finish was smooth enough, so it was fairly easy to drink. Worth trying once, but not really more.

Poured into a goblet.
3.0 A: Moderately hazed yellow wheat color. Just a whisp of fizzy white head formed then fell just as quickly.
4.0 S: This is a nice, earthy tripel. Not overly fruity like some - just right. Honey, pepper and clove spiciness dominate the nose. Hay and grassy hoppiness. Lightly floral with a dirty earthiness that I like a lot. Mildly yeasty. Overall, solid.
3.5 T: Like the nose, this is earthy and spicy. Honey, pepper, and clove are again the leading flavors. Hay, grassy, flowers, earth to follow. Not a lot of complexity, but what is there is done quite well.
4.0 M: Light to lighter medium body. Good carbonation level for the style, but on the lower end. Spritzy, light, and fluffy. Good here.
3.5 D: Good overall effort. Lacking in the complexity department, but other than that I have no complaints.

P: Pale bright yellow color that is evenly hazed. White fizzy head that lasts a few seconds and disappears.
S: Lime, lemon, tart and acidic, yikes stripes fruit striped gum, mango, pineapples, warmed milk in cereal, and bready yeast.
T/M: Dank earthy tropical fruit, musty mouth coating, tart lemon and limes. Belgian candy sugar, spices, and powdery yeast. Bitterness is apparent but subdued by the sweet alcohol. Booze starts to swarm once warm. Medium body with moderate carbonation. Finish is dry and bitter fruit soaked alcohol.
O: A nice anniversary surprise. A solid tripel that delivers complex flavors. The acidity was a tad much but overall a great beer to enjoy. Cheers!

Big thanks goes out to my doppelganger for sharing this one! Served from growler into a Terrapin mason jar. Poured a hazy golden yellow with a one finger white head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly. Maintained phenomenal lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, earth, banana, fruit, and subtle alcohol. The flavor was of sweet malt, earth, spices, subtle wood, banana, fruit, and subtle alcohol. It had a light feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was a pretty decent brew. This aroma on this one was quite good and very inviting. I was concerned that it would not be based on some of the past anniversary brews from them. But this one definitely surprised me on that front. The flavor unfortunately did not follow suit which was rather unfortunate for the brew overall. The boozy note on it was just a little much with the subtle flavors going on which were not able to balance it out. Worth trying if you get the chance.

Poured from a 22oz bomber into a tulip glass. Label says "Bottled in April 2012". It was golden sunshine color with good carb streams. It had a large, foamy white head that slowly settled to a constant 1/8" foam cap. Great lacing with lots sticking.
The aroma was yeasty with coriander and other peppery notes along with good level of fruitiness and sweet malt. Moderately dry aroma. The taste leads off with the fruit and then quickly joined by the spices for a dry and spicy finish. I can't pin it down but there is something in the aftertaste that I didn't enjoy and threw it off. Mouthfeel was medium with good carbonation but had that off aftertaste.
Overall, a good but not great Tripel for me. Avery is one of my favorite breweries and I've enjoyed most of the Anniversary Ales but this one was a slight miss for me. Avail here in TX. Rotation - one time release but if released again I'd have to pass.

2012 bottled in April. Poured into a Duvel snifter.
A - Cloudy, almost frozen lemonade colored, yellow with a fluffy head sporting large bubbles.
S - Warm yeast is the most prominent aroma followed by subtle fruits and pine. Dry smell for sure.
T - Dry upfront and throughout, which is not personally my favorite, but well done for the style. Some hops and citrus notes are present throughout with an emphasis on apricot.
M - A crisp and fizzy light bodied Tripel with no alcohol leaking through whatsoever.
O - A solid showing from Avery, but simply too dry for my liking; I prefer more Belgian yeasts, wet hops and a moist finish.

First had: on tap at TJ's, Paoli, PA
Poured a cloudy straw-yellow color with a thin white head, minimal retention and a bit of soapy lacing. Spicy yeast in the nose, and a mix of light phenol and fruity esters; pretty typical tripel profile, really. More of the same in the taste, bready malts, spicy coriander, yeast, banana and pear. Again, pretty typical stuff for the style. The tripel is a style that I'm falling more and more out of love with, but this one was actually quite smooth and drinkable, medium body, and soft carbonation. Alcohol was noticeable but not too pronounced. Pretty good selection from our pals at Avery.
