A sultry blend from twelve Cabernet Sauvignon barrels, Eremita III is comprised of ales from five different creations in the Avery Barrel Aging Cellar. Ranging from a blonde saison to a black saison to a strong Belgian amber ale, they spent between 9 months to over 3 years in their respective barrels. Eremita III is a sour ale without the training wheels.

In house sampling of the latest version of their house sour series proved to be fantastic once again. Avery just knows how to make a beer, and sours are no different. It was a beautiful day in Boulder, and I started with one of these.
Dark and cloudy, with a small amount of head and slightly pungent nose. The sour hits you immediately, and you get the oak bite from the barrels, but this is softened by the Cab Sauv that it mingled with. If you're on site and like a good sour, this is a must try.

On-tap at the Avery tasting room. This 4oz sampler was $5 and the 10oz pour was $10. Dark brown and clear, a thin ring of foam clung to the edges of the small snifter. Dark fruits (predominately cherry) with some toffee and burnt sugar. Aggressive but clean sourness dominates. Some peach and leather come out as it warms up. The sourness just keeps coming. High gravity sours can be hit or miss, and Eremita III is a bullseye hit.

On tap at Avery Tasting Room poured a clear reddish brown with a small lingering tan head. Aromas of carmel, toffee, barnyard funk, cherry and tobacco. Mouthfeel was light bodied and crisp with a dry tart finish. Flavors of toffee, cherry, tobacco and light barnyard funk with a crisp dry tart lingering funky fruity finish.

It's hard to find a good wild ale, unless you happen to have access to Russian River which I don't. I happen to really, really like those.
So I found myself at Avery tap room anticipating a long overdue visit, but especially to try this. I ordered the small taster glass to be sure, and one thing I disliked is that it came in a measured 4 oz glass leaving no room for a nose! However, the flavor blasted me with sour ... then it mellowed, then a second wave of even more sour. I didn't take particular notes, not thinking of reviewing it, but it was very good and I felt compelled. I did have trouble identifying characteristics in the nose, which had plenty of black cherry but otherwise kind of melded together. The taste was outstanding, although some may find it to be too much. Get it--the small pour is worth the rare opportunity ... go from there.
