Poured into a pint glass; light copper with a 1.5 finger fluffy off-white head. Good head retention, with fluffy peaks of foam remaining. Left nice clingy lace as well. A nice looking beer.

Smell was a bit of a let-down, though not at all unexpected for this style -- it was just pretty faint all around. Slight scent of sweet malt but also florally hops were noted. But "faint" is the word that kept coming to mind.

As for taste: sweet malts and florally hops put this a tad too much on the sweet side of things, though a minerally or metallic hop bitterness lingers after the sip, providing a little bit of balance on the tongue and encouraging that next sip. Like the smell, the flavors weren't particularly powerful one way or the other.

As for mouthfeel, I thought it was thin, and slightly chalky. Disappointed there.

Drinkable? Yes. A light body and only faint or slight characteristics mean this one wouldn't weigh you down. On the other hand, eventually I'd probably want a beer with a little more to it.

Notes: ESB is a fairly broad style, and this fits the style fine. I've always been a fan of Fuller's ESB, and though it's been awhile since I've had it, my recollection is that it's got more substance than the Avery 14'er. It's not a bad beer by any stretch, it's just nothing phenomenal.

A: The beer is very hazy yellowish amber in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a thin off white head that died down leaving a thin film of bubbles covering the surface, a collar around the edge, and some large webs of lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: There are aromas of caramel malts in the nose along with notes of orange citrus hops and hints of yeast.
T: The taste is very similar to the smell and has a light amount of bitterness, which particularly lingers through the finish.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and a bit chewy on the palate with a low to moderate amount of carbonation. There is a bit of dryness in the finish.
O: I found this beer quite flavorful and interesting compared to other beers in the style. It’s easy to drink and quite sessionable.
