Style | ABV
Pumpkin Ale |  18.10% ABV

Availability: Fall. bottle (103), on-tap (41)

Notes:
We wondered what would happen if a monstrous pumpkin ale, plump full of spicy gourdiness, were aged in fine fresh rum barrels, which add suggestions of delicate oak and candied molasses. Rumpkin is what happens!

I reviewed this beer earlier, but it was on tap and I only had a 4 oz. pour. At the time I thought that might be all I'd get this year. I was lucky enough, though, to get a few bottles of it and I was finally able to sit down and do a proper review of a full beer. That said, I will let my tap review stand as almost anyone who has had it on tap has also only had 4 ounces.

APPEARANCE: This resembles a classic Double IPA. It is deep copper without much head to speak of. It is very unassuming considering what a big beer this is.

SMELL: Brown sugar, dark rum and pumpkin make up the bulk of the aroma in this one, in that order. Some ginger and other sweeter spices come through in the background as well.

TASTE: Wow. All the aromas from the nose are jam packed into the flavor of this beer and it is incredible. This is what a pumpkin molasses cookie would taste like if it was in beer form. It truly is delicious.

MOUTHFEEL: Smooth, silky and very sweet. Each sip is sticky up front, but dries out for the finish preventing it from getting to sticky and mouthcoating.

OVERALL: Honestly, pumpkin beers don't get better than this. If you get the chance, drink it.

Dec 2011

6 ounce pour into a globe glass at Big Wood festival at Brouwers in Seattle.

Pours clear ruby with about a finger of off-white head.

Smells very strongly of sweet fruit, it’s kind of like rotting fruit. Not in a bad way, just the way it gets stronger and sweeter when it rots. You can smell the rum from a mile away. There are a few light spices and I can detect very little pumpkin.

The taste was a lot of booze and sweet fruits. No surprises. Very crisp and full.

Palate was decent. Lots of alcohol bite and very carbonated.

Overall, I expected more from this. Love the style, and love the brewery, but Great Pumpkin still stands as my favorite pumpkin beer.
