A: A little bit poured out from the can into a double shot glass. It was a very clear golden yellow in color with a frothy white head.

S: Yeast and a semi sweet and tart apple like smell.

T: Similar to the smell, the finish is grassy ad earthy. A nice hop bitterness that was pretty surprising.

M: Light to medium body, slightly creamy. Medium carbonation.

O: Pretty impressed by the hoppiness and complexity of this beer for the style. It's nice to see craft beer companies putting out American Pilsners to give people a real taste of the style aside from the typical commercial garbage pilasters.

One of the final out-of-state brews I grabbed while I was in Missouri. Wish we still had Avery here in Indiana…feel free to come back any time, guys.

A: An inch of white foam rises over a pale yellow body that’s a little too still for the style: sparse bubbles drift slowly from the bottom of the glass to the top. As the body drops, a thin sheet of lacing appears.

S: A typical lager nose, but with a hardy yeast character at the fore; aromas of vanilla and overripe banana are dominant, providing a full, sweet character. Hops are surprisingly limited, showing only a catty grass character just in the background. Crisp malt notes of straw, cornbread, and fruity wheat are evident, as well.

T: Joe hits with a spicy, floral tone of Noble hops, much more complex than in the nose – a potpourri of flavors from lemon peel and grapefruit to ginger and dandelion, giving the palate a peppery dryness. The rest of the body is clean, but the flavors are a bit too chewy to be lager-crisp: the malt-yeast combo manifest with tastes of white bread, thick pancake batter, banana, and a very mild hint of cooked vegetables. Finishes a tad dry, a lemon hoppiness lingering.

M: For a pilsner, this is fairly thick. That lack of fizz, though, helps this one go down in a more dignified way – I’d imagine this being a more run-of-the-mill if it were bubbling constantly. The world needs less fizzy yellow beers.

O: So Avery…feel free to move back here whenever you want. If you keep making beer like this, I’m sure we’ll be able to find some shelf space for you.

Note: According to some websites, the date code on this could very well represent a brewed-on date of June 2011. I really doubt that a lager could hold up that long, but if it did: hell yes, Avery! Next time I’m in town I’ll have to try it fresh.

A: Corn yellow with a good clarity, a quick paced carbonation factor and a chalky white head that was thin, creamy leaving a generous coating of spotty lace. Short retention hold.

S: Nose was pilsner grains, nobel hops, and dried corn stalks.

T: Flavor comes with a bite of bitter hops, flowery, dried corn stalks and grains. The hop level is pretty high, though not spicy, more dried, bitter with some dried hay. There does appear to be a faint lacquery-vinyl hint to this which may be attributed to poor craftmenship or just a off batch, which is not uncommon with such a light bodied beer.

M: Could be crisper in the mouthful, light bodied, nothing to exciting going on here, some off flavor twang, not really tight, slightly creamy.

O: Overall the laquery-vinyl off flavor could just be a batch oriented occurence, but was very noticeable, especially upon warmer temps. May be just a bad batch, but otherwise would still garnish ordinary results from me.

Poured golden straw clear color with 1-2 fingers of frothy white head. Lots of bubbles brewing. Average lacing on the sides of the glass. Nice retention on the top on the way down.

Smelled a sharp whiff of spicy malts that almost immediately went away. Doughy bread came to mind. Also corn and hay. Those spices were lingering on the nose after.

Much more flavor in the taste compared to the nose. Very smooth. Bread, lemon grass, dough and cereal. Still those pleasant spices, which I can’t name.

Light body. Thin texture. Average carbonation. Smooth, refreshing, clean finish.

A pretty good pilsner overall. I would definitely have it again.

S: Perfumy hops, bready & crackery notes

T: Follows the nose, dry & some pear notes & a touch of herbal bitterness. Grainy, crackery, with white grape & lemon. Finishes dry, grainy, crackery & fruitty

MF: Light body with crisp carbonation, good balance

Super drinkability, really like this one for the style, would buy this again during the dog days of Summer, which will be here in about 3 weeks :P

Poured into pint glass. Appearance is ridiculously pale, a few shades darker than water. Frothy white head forms and retains leaving splotchy markings on side of glass. The nose has firm cereal grain profile paired with light herbal hops and notes of lemon rind and grass. Taste is mild up front and has a grainy backbone that shines on the finish. Mouthfeel is feather light with moderate carbonation. Overall, a simple beer with mild flavor. Tastier than adjunct lagers, but not a whole lot going on.

This is a nice, hoppy, refreshing lager. This is definitely a beer worth trying.

Poured into 6oz. Leine's bar glass.
Very pale slightly cloudy with full white head.
Slightly sweet and pale malty aroma. Only hints of hops.
Bitterness shows through right away. Some balancing malt and sweetness. Finish is drying, slightly bitter and quite extended. Some tartness pushing to sourness show and leads to some puckering.
Light body but not really watery, just enough heft to give it a little feel.
Finishing sourness is a little off-putting. This is alright. I like the can.

Poured into a Sam Adams glass, light head developed which lasted a short while and some modest lacing. Appearance was a slightly hazy, straw color. Aroma was of a light citrus, not much else. Taste was a slightly bitter citrus with a slight sour on the back. Mouthfeel was light and aftertaste was slightly bitter and sour.

Pours very pale yellow color, but appearance recovers with a full creamy head. Head lingers well throughout consumption and leaves nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is pretty full pilsner hops - floral with some spices. Flavor is milder than the aroma - more floral and some spices with some pilsner presence.

Appearance
Pale straw with 1 finger of white head. Excellent clarity and low carbonation.

Nose
Light bready malts with drops of apple juice and corn.

Taste
Light breadiness and corn husk with notes of adjunct-esque apple juice. Decent amount of bitterness. Touches of grapefruit and grass.

Mouthfeel
Light-medium bodied, crisp, clean and dry.

Overall
Tastes a little Adjunct-laden. Corn and apple?? Kind of weird...

Excellent, refreshing version of a pilsner. The best lager beer that I've tried. The appearance is clear and clean in the glass. The beer is smooth enough to drink from the can. The aroma gives a light bitter presence. The beer is crisp and smooth. The mouthfeel is not just refreshing, but more satisfying than you would expect. It is slightly richer and doesn't just wash past your palate.

A fabulous white head breaks apart ragged and chunky. Pale, brassy yellow in color.

Typical aroma with some grass, fresh grain and a twist of lemon.

Tastes lemony up front with some lemon peel thrown in, a bit of sweetness, some grain and green apple in the finish

Clean and dry going down and perfectly light bodied.

A couple of these and visions of summer are already dancing in my wintery head.

12 oz can poured into a pilsner glass at fridge temperature.

L – Straw color with 4-finger white bubbly, frothy head. Really nice retention and patchy lacing. Clear with lots of bubbles.

S – Biscuity and grainy malt with a good amount of floral and earthy noble hops.

T – Starts off sweet with bready and grainy malt. Bitterness builds with a solid dose of earthy, floral, and herbal hops and continues to build toward the finish. Really hoppy for a pilsner.

F – Medium-bodied with good carbonation, a creamy but crisp mouthfeel, and a spicy, bitter, and slightly dry finish. Spicy and floral hop bitterness lingers.

O – This is a pretty good pilsner. It’s a little too hoppy for my liking. Easing back on them would probably do the beer some good, balancing out the bitterness with the malty sweetness. Still, it’s a pretty tasty and drinkable beer. I probably wouldn’t seek it out again due to the offsetting hoppiness, but I can never really complain about using too many hops.

A big white head falls into a decent lacing above a clear straw golden colored beer.

Sour grain malts, citrusy lemon and other hops in the aroma.

Lemony bitter hops with some lighter light grains taste.

A dry aftertaste with some of the citrus hops hanging around on this light bodied beer.

Seems like a basic pilsner style beer, nothing bad about it but not of the outstanding or noteworthy variety either.

Appearance: Light hazy yellow....beer glows a bit when held up to the light. When I first poured it I saw a bit of a Mountain-Dew yellow. Decent white head upon pouring that slowly died back to a persistent thin white foam across the top. Nice thick sheets of lacing.

Smell: Some malt and grain and a bit of lemon citrus. As the beer warms up you can finally smell the hops in full depth - and the lemon is still there as are the noble hops.

Taste: Crisp with quick transition into bitter hop finish. Hop finish is lemon, with some noble hops thrown in at the end as well with some malt underneath, but just barely. A beer definitely on the bitter side of things, but it's not excessively bitter.

Mouthfeel: Nice carbonation, good thickness underneath. Hops definitely sticking to the teeth with this one.

Overall / Drinkability: A very interesting take on this style of American beer, and definitely quite hoppy. I'm not sure if it is as drinkable as the brewer claims, but I could see this beer pairing with a lot of American dishes as well, and I find it enjoyable enough that I wouldn't mind having another one another time....but not in one sitting. It's too hoppy and not light and refreshing enough. A good beer, but not a highly drinkable pilsener as described on the can.

Served on tap in a 10 oz chalice glass

Appearance – Served a lighter clear golden color with a small white head. The head faded relatively fast to leave only a light amount of lacing.

Smell – Overall it was quite light. The aroma was of a bready nature with hints of a herbal nature as well as some citrus hop.

Taste – The taste begins with a bready taste mixed with some lemon citrus hop flavor. There is a lighter caramel sweetness up front that is soon lost more toward the middle of the taste as a herbal hop flavor greets the tongue. At the end, a grapefruit citrus hop takes over the herbal and blends with the bready flavors to leave a crisp and bitter flavor on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the average to lighter side with a carbonation level that is slightly above average. Good for the style.

Overall - Rather flavorful for the lighter abv. but retaining a nice taste profile. Quite nice and easy drinking.

The color is pale yellow. Fluffy white head. It is a b it cloudy and has lots of carbonation. The smell and the taste are both sweet and bitter. The sweet in the smell is the citrus hops, lemon. The taste has only a small hop bite, it could use a bit more.Very light and easy to drink. This is a good conversion from macro beer.

A - Pours with one finger of white foam on top of a slightly hazy, straw colored body. The head settles slowly and leaves nice lace on the glass.

S - A somewhat sour, grainy malt aroma with some herbal hops in the background.

T - Light, husky malt up front with a bit of malt. Any malt depth is lost behind dry, grainy character in the middle and a finish of herbal hops and a fairly strong bitterness.

M - Medium body, moderate carbonation, and a dry finish.

D - This isn't doing much for me. I'm all for craft lagers, but American "pilsner" as a craft beer style just doesn't make sense to me. Pre-prohibition style or not, it's bland and kind of harsh and in the end it just isn't a very good beer.

A: single finger head with scattered lacing on a clear somewhat bright golden body.

S: pretty fruity with banana, some pineapple and lemon custard with barely and pale malts.

T: very clean, with sweet corn and also a little fruity up front but the sweetness is mild and its not sour or tart either, a very subdued sweetness. sharp grain notes, pale malts in the finish. the hops are mild providing a light bitter quality

M: light body and moderate to high carbonation

Overall: this one has a lot of nice flavors, they are just all understated which in turn really helps drinability.

A: Pours a crystal clear straw yellow with a foamy white head. Looks a lot like a macro, but has a better looking head and decent retention and lacing.

S: German hops right off the bat with some of that classic pilsner malt in the mix too. A bit of sweet cereal grains as well.

T: Decent hop bit up front. Different kind of hop profile, probably from the German Noble hops. Some sweet cereal grains take over with just a touch of lemon. Fairly clean, crisp finish. Very flavorful for being 4.7% and it has some complexity to it too.

M: Lighter body, average carbonation. Fairly smooth though.

O: A great pilsner. One of the better ones I've had in a long time. Great drinkability.

12oz can into a 668 tulip. Thanks to von schplieffen for tossing one of these my way to review.

A: Clear straw colored body under a finger of frothy white head. Ok retention, spotty lace. Not bad.

S: Veyr clean and primarily yeasty. Flinty minerality and some lemony citrus notes. Bready malt comes through as it warms. Quite nice.

T: Follows the nose precisely. Good balance of malt, hops, and lager yeast. Veyr crisp finish. Good stuff.

M: Light body with carbonation to match. A bit lifeless, but not terrible.

O: Solid Pils. I'd happily drink this if I couldn't get fresh Elm City; much preferred to Mama's Little Yella, fwiw.

12 ounce can, w/o freshness/bottling date info.

Pour is super light straw, slightly hazed, with some bubbles rising. The head is near white, loose and quickly departing. Leaves gauzy webs of lace and a fine bubble film

Light grassy notes and herbal hops on the nostrils.

Tasty and happy lager, with more herbal notes, along with some more grass notes. Quite dry in the mid section and in the finish.

Decent brew, worth a try, but don’t expect anything special. Hops and crispness add to the drinkability and the overall worthiness of this offering.

On tap at Avery’s tap room in Boulder, CO. Pours clear-golden with white, long lasting head and lively carbonation. Aroma is of pale malt and perfume hops. Body is light and very crisp. Herbal, perfume hops are balanced on the palate by biscuit malt. Finish is long and dry. Very nice Pilz.

Avery Joe’s Pilsner: It’s a crystal clear bright yellow beer with light carbonation topped with a pure white head. Faint on the aroma. The flavor is dry all the way through with notes of lime and grapefruit on the finish. A good pils. Avery keeps rising in my estimation. They brew a great whit and fine IPA. All of their bomber offerings are wonderful. This pils keeps with the tradition.
