light roast here. noble hop flavor balances. would like a bit more toffee sweetness.

mouthfeel is full and crisp.

lightly experimental and pleasant. very easy to drink

May 2010 bottling date

A: into a pilsner-ish glass: nearly translucent dark brown-black body with a couple of fingers of tan head that laced the glass nicely

S: dark roasted malts and crisp hops

T: bittersweet dark malts, roastiness; smooth and bitter hops; undercurrents of cocoa, caramel; herbal, earthy, musky, smoky

M: dry, bitter, light, mellow, lingering aftertastes of smoke and roasted malt

O: not a beer designed for extended cellaring, but this incidentally aged bottle was quite fresh tasting and enjoyable - if it was better than this before, it must've been pretty amazing then - refreshing and drinkable, not too filling, great flavors and feel - wonderful hop action

Bottle has been cellared for longer than probably advisable, but remember paying a small fortune for it at a Michigan bottleshop, so will review regardless!

Pours a near black with auburn-chocolate highlights and a decent cappuccino-coloured head. Crisp mouthfeel appropriate to a lager. Aroma of caramelized chocolate malts and faded hops, that I'm certain was far more impressive much closer to the beer's initial release. However the flavour remains enjoyable, despite the age. Dark malts with their caramelized sweetness along with roasted chocolate and coffee elements. Maintains a nice bitterness, although any earlier citrus notes have disappeared. The high alcohol content is scarily well hidden.

Still rating this highly, as it's a decent beer and I can't blame Avery for my own cellaring idiocy!

Bottled May 2010.

Opaque, black body. Manila-colored head has great retention, same with lace. Strongly malty aroma, a little roasted, stale hops in the background. Hmm, this should've been opened sooner.

Mild roast in the base, dry yeast, old hops join the fray at the end. This would've been a totally different beer when fresh. Enjoyable, not fantastic, but a solid offering nonetheless.

his brew poured a dark brown color. This had a two finger off-white head. The carbonation was not visible due to the color of the brew. There was also significant lacing on the glass. On the nose, there was a bit of sweet smoke. I also got a touch of earthiness to this. Others have said that they get chocolate, but I didn’t get much of that. On the first sip, I got some bitterness and a malty sweetness. There’s also a bit of citrus going on in this. I really don’t get the bacon taste that the bartender said would be there. Also, the alcohol in this is pretty well hidden. Despite the color, it’s lighter than I expected. I assumed this would remind me of the porter, but it’s definitely lighter. The smoke is understated, but still would go nicely with barbecue or burgers. Not a bad brew, but not something I would search out again.

Served from bottle into a Boulevard tulip. Poured brown with a two finger off-white head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, bread, dark fruit, wood, and citrus hop. The flavor was of sweet malt, bread, dark fruit, citrus, and citrus hop. It had a medium feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was a pretty decent brew. Upon inspection of the flavor I was pleasantly surprised to not find the wood characteristic found in the aroma. Rather I found quite a bit of citrus going on in the flavor especially on the followthrough which kept me coming back for more despite some of the other shortfalls I found on this one. Definitely worth trying even with the age on it as the flavor has held up quite well.

very nice, thick, dark in appearance. Not a lot of foam when poured. Bold flavor, "peat-like"; very pleasant taste with not a lot of alcohol overtones. As the beer warmed, that changed. Still not over powering. Heavy and full of body in your mouth.Great beer.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled May 2010. Pours crystal clear very dark brown color with a nice 2 finger dense dark khaki head with great retention that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Some nice spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas of big caramel, roasted malt, toasted biscuit, molasses, chocolate, light coffee, earthy hops, and a touch of dark fruits. Very nice aromas with good strength and complexity. Taste of chocolate, caramel, roasted malt, toasted biscuit, molasses, nuttiness, coffee, dark fruit, earthy hops, and herbal spiciness. Fair amount of spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, and herbal hops on the finish for a good bit. Very nice and lush malt balance with the hop bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very creamy and slightly slick mouthfeel. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed at all on the finish. Overall this is a highly excellent black lager from Avery. Great flavor balance and complexity; and very smooth to drink for the alcohol level.
