Pours a lovely dark brown in the Pilsener glass. A fine-grained foam sits nicely on it. A rich, velvety mouthfeel with plenty of prickly carbonation. From the 12 oz bottle bought at Barons Marketplace in San Diego.

The flavor is a little winey to start. Dark roast malt with a fruity flavor and lots of burnt sugar. The typical notes of chocolate and coffee. A malty sweetness that is nicely balanced by the bitter aftertaste. Just enough hops without overwhelming the roasted flavors. Tangier than most Porters. The head is quite excellent, lasting to the bottom of the tall glass.

Review taken from notes(Late Feb. 2013)

12 oz brown bottle with neat Avery label art. I actually remember buying this because of the art on the label. It's appealing to me. Anyway, poured Into a tulip style/stout pint glass.

A - first look is nearly black in color but the true color of very dark brown reveals itself once examined more closely. Maybe some slight hits of dark ruby, but it's more of a dark brown that appears to be a soft black mass. Small, Medium Brown colored head forms on top That does leave a trace of lacing on the glass.

S - Pure black malt paired with small whiffs of dark chocolate. Hop profile smells cascade black ipa/ale like. Somewhat resinous and just Right down rich dark aromas with a hint of spice in the backdrop.

T - black and chocolate malts feature as the star of this flavor, but it's co-star hop profile is almost as talented constantly stealing the spotlight. This isnt the traditional porter flavors im accustomed to, but the dry hopped flavor still provide good flavor. It has a bit of roast to it, but an equal amount of caramel sweetness with both being dominated by the black malts and cascade like hops. Maybe a touch of some weird dark fruit just before the finish.

M - Pretty medium bodied but still has a good thickness to the overall feel. Its not flawless, but it let's you know you are sipping a black colored ale. Abv goes nearly unnoticed and the drinkability is there.

O - I enjoy Avery brews. Personally this isn't an ale I'd throw the 'porter' tag on by any means as its more of a traditional American Black ale. Not sure I'd even go with black ipa but it definitely had characteristics of both the porter and black ipa. For me it's quite the interesting and unique beer. Not sure what the release on this is whether it's year round or seasonal, but this was fresh and pretty enjoyable. Not something I'll crave all year long, but something that is worth picking up again. It's complexity and depth character are present and paired with some Avery class it's worth a go for anyone. It is for me anyway.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

A: Pours a very dark ruby color. The head is a two finger mocha shade, settling to one finger after a while. As it fades, lots of webbed lacing remains on the glass.

S: The tone this one takes in general is "hops first, porter second", with plenty of earthy, lemon, pine, and grapefruit notes emanating from the hop profile. As it warms up, a faint amount of roasted barley and chocolate appear.

T: The hops here are front loaded on the palate, opening with flavors of lemon and pine. The midtaste and finish sees an increase of roasted, coffee-forward notes along side an upsurging 'ping' of hop bitterness. Granted, I let this one sit in the fridge for 2 months before opening (and God only knows how fresh it was when I picked it up), but this is a bit more balanced than I was assuming.

M: On the lighter side in terms of texture without being watery. The finish has a pleasant drying sensation, as well. Easy to drink.

O: Even with a few months on it, it's pretty damn good - or maybe it's pretty damn good BECAUSE it has a few months on it? Not sure. Would buy again, though; one of the more successful robust porters I've had in a while.

From a 355 ml bottle into a globe glass.

A-The brew is nearly black in color with a dense, one-finger head of tan foam. The head fades slowly and leaves some nice lacing behind on the glass.

S-The first whiff will tell you that this is not, in fact, a porter. Although there are some chocolatey malts and coffee smells, they are counteracted by strong scents of spicy, slightly dank hops. The hop smells grow in strength as the brew warms.

T-The taste tracks the smell very closely. The hop kick is almost enough to consider this brew a black IPA, but the malts hold just enough sway. It works for me.

M-The feel is moderately creamy and the oily hops seem to battle the creamy foam in my mouth. Its unique and I find it drinkable.

O-This is one of the first black/dark hop-forward beers that I can recall really enjoying. I'm not sure if this brew is true to style, but I find the flavors really work with and against each other to create a drinkable, wintery, hoppy brew.

Pours an impenetrable black body with a small tan head with decent retention. Aromas are predominantly roasty and sweet, big on notes of toffee and dark chocolate, lighter on notes of old coffee and charred skillet scrapings. All of these notes carry through taste-wise to the front and mid palate, which are very mocha-like, but the finish is decidedly darker and more charred, and conveys just a hint of vanilla that enchantingly lingers. Mouthfilling, smooth, if somewhat too silken for the boldness of its flavor profile (wow, that sounds snobbish). Very enjoyable . Really, this is an excellent beer.

Notes are recent.

I'm doubting this beer's claims as a porter from the start. Nearly pitch-black, it's not like any porter I've seen before. A tan head grows to one finger in height. Retention is good, as it never really goes away after it drops just a little. Lacing is left in plenty down the glass, patching with some legs almost until it reaches the bottom.
This one's roasty, with a bit of char to it. There's some chocolate as well. It's also quite piney. While the porter claim is suspect, now I'm sure it's on 'dem newfangled black-type hybrid malty IPA-type thangs. Bitterness lingers on the palate, though in the flavor the char takes a bit too hard an edge into the finish. Otherwise, it's quite enjoyable.
This one's nice and smooth, the body a nice, deep medium verging on full. There's a good creaminess to it that makes for easy drinking, though crispness isn't neglected.

12 oz bottle was poured into a pint glass.

Appearance: This beer poured a one finger head that reduced to a thin layer and left some nice lacing on the glass. It is a pitch black color with no clarity or bubbles seen coming up through the glass. More lacing on the glass as the beer was drank.

Smell: Chocolate, roasted coffee, pine, and smoke.

Taste: Taste is along the same lines as the scent. A little lingering bitterness and ash in the end of the palate.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, medium to full bodied, low to medium carbonation, and easy to drink.

Overall: Pretty nice black ale. A little more hop presence like others and some creaminess would have been nice, but I'm happy overall.

12 oz bottle served in a snifter.
Poured very dark mahogany with nice reddish highlights when held in strong light. Moderately durable tan head is creamy soft. Decent, spotty lacing.

Aroma: Features orange and chocolate over a roasted malt base that was less strong than expected.

The flavor is a bit richer and stronger than the aroma suggests even though the chocolate component is less pronounced than expected. Some herbal/grassy notes step in, and there are hints of coffee, burnt toast and smoke in the mild-moderately bitter finish and aftertaste.

Medium body, exceptionally smooth, well carbonated, but a touch watery.

O: Not really a porter but rather a bit of a hybrid, hopped up "New World Porter". Good effort but falls short of a seamless hybridization. Does fit with BA Style = American Black Ale.

Bottled 12/22/12.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, char, and some slight hop aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa powder and herbal hop flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roasty and hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a pretty good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that has a nice balance between the roasty, cocoa, and hop aromas and flavors.

Bottling Code – "12345B7" = 2012, December 11, Tank B7
Tasted February 3 2013

A – Dark chocolate brown, almost opaque, some caramel/light oaky edges. Mocha/latte looking head leaves nice lacing down the glass.

S – Sweet. Milk, cream, and chocolate. Vanilla and molasses. This comes across as a milk stout, almost no hops coming through here.

T – Big bitter hops, bright and floral; semi-subdued by the heavy & sweet malt profile. Some coffee grounds and crisp biscuit malts come through as well.

M – Crisp & surprisingly light. Not cloyingly sweet like the aroma would suggest. Nice.

O – A conundrum of a beer. Huge sweet/milk stout aromas, but has a nice crisp/clean taste. A unique beer. Love it.

Poured into a shaker pint glass.

The beer is a bitter chocolate black. An oatmeal colored head hangs around for awhile leaving sheets of lacing as you drink.

The nose is slightly hoppy, with roasted malts and bitter coffee.

The taste is also a bit hoppier than usual. But a good rich assortment of charred grains, roasted malts, and bitter chocolate come it. Strong and rich.

Mouthfeel is dry and hoppy finish.

Overall, just not a fan of hoppy porters, but this is still incredibly well crafted. Avery never disappoint.

A - black with some red around the edges; big, thick, cap of soft, dense, brown head that has decent retention

S - citrus, grapefruit, spicy hops, some peppery spice, faint chocolate

T - big citrus, orange, grapefruit, some mild peppery spiciness, chocolaty malts, some mild caramel and burnt sugar notes

M - medium bodied, well carbonated

The bottle claims "A Pioneer Black IPA". They're probably right. This is definitely more than a porter. The hops are really intense, but not overly bitter. The malts balance well with the hops. The overall drinkability is tremendous. I could drink a lot of this. It's definitely well worth finding and trying.

A: Very dark brown... almost black. Head dissipates very quickly although there is decent retention.

S: Very nice hop aroma. The hops seem to overpower everything else.

T: Big hop bite up front followed immediately by some chocolaty malt flavors. The hops really linger.

M: Though the hops stick around for a while it gets a little dull elsewhere.

O: This is apparently the "first black IPA"... though that would be like saying Robert Johnson is the first blues guitar player. Avery was definitely way ahead of the times when they made this style however. I enjoyed this beer greatly. I am partial to hoppy dark ones, and this one is definately worth a try. I would drink it again in a heartbeat.

Avery New World Porter pours out a medium creamy head. The lacing is about as thick as you will see on a porter. Very nice. The body however was a bit thin. Slightly creamy.

Tasting notes would include strong dark malt, light coffee and dark chocolate. The porter was a little on the sweet side. The aroma notes featured chocolate, malt and molasses

A - Pours a nice dark color with a creamy head, roughly 2 fingers in width and leaves a decent lace.

S - Has the aroma of citrus hops with a hint of coffee.

T - The citrus hops are noticed almost immediately. It fades away to a bitter coffee taste.

M - This is a dry beer with moderate-high carbonation.

O - I am not a huge fan of overly hopped up porters, but this one is not bad. For someone who enjoys the strong presence of tangy hops, this would be a good choice.

A- Almost black, a bit a light shines through at the edges, topped with a medium khaki head. The head fades slowly to a ring and leaves some nice lace on the glass.

S- Floral hops and hints of roast malt or coffee. Not a very strong aroma on this one.

T- Citrus hops right away, not overly strong or bitter, this is balanced out by a roasted malt backbone with some mild notes of coffee in it. Finish is dry with a hint of hop bitterness and a final note of coffee.

M- Feels a little thin for me, might be on for the style but I was expecting a little more, carbonation is moderate as well.

O- Decent beer, I'm not a huge fan of hop up porters, but his one is one of the more drinkable ones I've run across, the 6.7% ABV isn't going to wreck you either.

12 fl oz brown glass bottle with standard pressure cap served into a nonical pint glass in me gaff in high altitude Castle Rock, Colorado. Reviewed live. Expectations are above average given the style and brewery. 6.7%. Listed as a "Black IPA" on its label. No bottled on or best before date.

Served straight from the refrigerator and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: Pours a three finger head of beige-khaki colour, nice cream, nice thickness, and great retention. Decent lacing. Foamy and inviting. Colour is a dark nontransparent black. Perhaps an extremely dark ruby, but I doubt it. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show.

Sm: Hoppy, with floral character taming the bitterness. Dark malts form the foundation. Some cream. No real proper porter notes. A moderate strength aroma.

T: Dark malts with some roasted barley. Strangely handled hops ride atop with no distinct character whatsoever. Some cream on the open. Pleasant off-berry malt flavour emerges on the climax and is a highlight of the brew. Balanced strangely, but alright. If this is truly a porter as stated on the website, it's a poor one - but I trust it's a black IPA - albeit an underwhelming one. Some layering but no true subtlety. I like the dark malts. No yeast or alcohol comes through.

Mf: Creamy to an extent, but not horribly so for a porter. Smooth and wet, suiting the style and flavours. Adequately thick. Nicely carbonated. Fairly light on the palate for its depth of flavour.

Dr: Drinkable but far from unique or special. I wouldn't get it again. Hides its ABV nicely. Not Avery's best offering, but a decent one.

My 1,200th beer. I wanted to try this for a while since it's a porter that drinks like a black IPA.

A - Can't knock the look it is a pretty solid dark brown almost black with a 1/2 inch of opaque colored head.

S - As expected it's a nicely hopped up porter with citrus hops and some underlying coffee and roast.

T - Fairly dry (as expected for a porter) and some piney hops mixed with some roast and a semi sweet finish. It's enjoyable but again dry and hoppy.

M - Medium yet dry.

Overall if you like Black IPA's you will like this. It's a shame it's not a touch more sweet to balance the dry hopped goodness.

12 oz bottle into my Central Waters snifter.

Thick khaki colored head stands atop a dark brown base. Reddish-cola colored highlights pop when backlit.

Cocoa powder and hops on the nose with some bark woodiness as well. There's also a lactic milky quality here as well.

Milk and dark chocolate and woody hops. Dirty porter and a drying finish. Body is light and very creamy. Back end is very vegetative and herbal hoppiness that is wrapped up by the black patent malt.

Overall, this drank a bit more like a porter than a Black IPA, which worked just fine for me. An enjoyable, albeit slightly understated, hybrid.

eager to try this "new world" take on a porter. the beer pours a dark, dark brown with a light tan head in my sam adams glass. nose hits you with roasted malts, chocolate, and toffee primarily, with lesser notes of some floral hops hiding in there. taste is malty up front, then fades into some hop bitterness; i suppose this is where the black ipa side comes out. not as rich and mouth filling as a porter - somehow i was expecting more in the department. a good brew all around, though i would say definitely more of a dry porter than a black ipa.

New World Porter opens with a surprisingly hoppy nose, ripe with grapefruit, lemon, and touches of pine resin, and at first blush bears little resemblance to a porter, and much more to an IPA. After a few seconds the initial hop aromas fade slightly, revealing a much darker malt base rich with coffee, cream, baking whole wheat bread, and thick molasses. Touches of ash and pepper add a bit of spark, mixed in with a not-insubstantial dollop of caramel. As a whole, the nose is quite nice, bearing excellent aromas in well-balanced proportions. But even with the darker malt aromas at the most present, this beer still does not smell like a porter. The hops are simply too present in their pink grapefruit goodness, providing a strange introduction. Perhaps much of the problem here lies in the name, for while the beer is labeled a “porter” in its title, a small note on the side of the label denotes it as a “Black IPA”—something I didn’t notice until the strong hop aromas made me read the bottle more carefully.

On the tongue, the initial flavors are hops, rushing forward in grapefruit, lemon, mint, and pine resin with somewhat unbalanced strength. I say this because the malts prove a little difficult to locate against the hop onslaught, and only touches of coffee, ash, brown sugar, cream, and caramel make their way through. There is still a good bit of baking bread, however, and apricot fruit esters add a lovely sugary note. The aftertaste is, at first, a continuation of the bright, citrusy grapefruit and lemon hop notes, though after a while a runnel of ash makes it way through, providing for an interesting experience. Mouthfeel is a slightly watery medium-light, and carbonation is medium.

Overall, while I quite liked the hop flavors in here, there simply weren’t enough of the darker, malty notes--certainly not enough to satisfy this drinker’s craving for a Black IPA. Without this label--i.e. if I were drinking this blind--the beer would actually be quite good, and I would simply assume I was partaking in a good IPA with some light touches of ash. But the contrast confuses my tongue, as does the slightly watery mouthfeel. So while there is much to appreciate in this brew, I think its labeling doesn’t work. Drink it as a straight IPA, then, and enjoy.

Thanks to ncketchum for the bottle. Poured this into my CBS snifter for maximum drinking pleasure.

A) Deep rich brown color. Nearly a finger of khaki colored head, which settled to a dusting. Decent lacing too.

S) Coffee roast, mild pine and citrus, a bit of caramel is detectable as this warms up.

T) Darker malt, a bit of chocolate and coffee. There is a strong hop presence, mostly citrus. Lots of rind on the finish and aftertaste. No alcohol noted.

M) Medium body, decent amount of carbonation. Starts out smooth, moves to sticky, then prickly.

O) A good, and for the most part enjoyable beer. I don't drink a lot of Porters, so it's not a style in my wheelhouse, but this kind of reminded me of a black IPA. Worth a try....
