It was meant to be on tap at The Good Life, but by the time I showed up it was already kicked! Now that's a release party. Luckily one of the owners (Pete) had an extra growler and hooked me up. Love that guy.

The look is exactly what an Imperial Stout should be. It's nearly opaque black with a wonderfully chocolate colored head and lace. The smell is a bit over the top with the alcohol for me, but other notes like vanilla, bourbon, coffee, and even a bit of chocolate are there. I'd have to say the same about the flavor, the alcohol is completely unmasked and is quite dominant, but the coffee does a great job of balancing the bourbon notes. Chocolate comes into play a little more as well. I only noticed it in the nose after tasting it. Absolutely smooth and quite viscous. Overall a very solid beer, but a bit high in the ABV.

Had on tap at the Momi Hiwa release party at the brewery!! Pours up black with a nice dark brown head. Great lacing. Aroma is intense coffee. Some chocolate. Taste is HUUUGE coffee!!! Biggest coffee beer I've ever had!!! Chocolate, roasted malts, blah blah blah. It's all about this HUUUGE coffee flavor!! Full bodies, nice carbo. Amazing!

Black opal like appearance it gave way to a nice stiff and thick head that collared near the end but hung around for some time.

HUGE roasted coffee in the nose, it dominates the entire scent. A robust and rich blend of ground coffee is all I catch in a very pleasing, albeit one sided aroma.

HUGE roasted coffee on the tongue, it dominates the entire taste. A robust and rich blend of coffee it becomes overwhelming at the end. After coffee hits you it ends with a tobacco after taste that drops the score a bit. Labeled 16 pct ABV you would never know it as it is very smooth and easy to drink.

Pours an opaque onyx with a frothy half inch hot chocolate colored head that lingers surprisingly long.

Fresh roasted coffee bean fruitiness, espresso, dark chocolate, and cocoa give the atoms a very mocha tone. Rich roast malt complements toasty oak well. Booze is fairly subtle.

Deep coffee notes and slightly charred malt are at the forefront, along with a boozy vanilla sweetness. There's an underlying fruit character that emerges as it warms. Definitely coffee dominant initially. Considering the abv, alcohol flavor is fairly well masked. Nutty notes emerge as it warms, with more chocolate coming forth, as well. Becomes smoky and fairly oaky and boozy late, with the booze becoming somewhat overwhelming.

Body is smooth, luscious, and full, with a modest amount if carbonation and significant alcohol warmth that hits deep.

Delicious brew, full of flavor. Coffee is definitely the star, which is a negative for me regarding my preferences for imperial stout flavors. I prefer chocolate. The alcohol becomes overwhelming.

A - Black syrup, espresso, sticky brown lacing. Looks strong and viscous.

S - Bitter black coffee, espesso, semi sweet chocolate, and cocoa.

T - Bitter sweet espresso, and coffee. Cocoa powder and faint dark chocolate. Burnt grains and booze.

M - Soft, smooth, velvety. Soft, tiny bubbled carbonation with a warming dry finish.

On draft at Churchkey in D.C.

Served alongside Avery Mephistopheles.

The beer is black with a quarter inch of oily, dark beige head. The aroma offers a potent dose of rich coffee, followed by light booze, roast, espresso, malt, chocolate. What a bold flavor! Rich and intense with a grand coffee presence. Alcohol warmth in the finish, but not nearly the heat I was expecting and even fearing from a beer of this stature. Full bodied with moderately low carbonation. A delightful brew to sip and savor. I'm so glad I finally came across this one. Delicious.

Had it two years at EBF now.
Dark, thick, rich, and bam! Espresso!
Perfect silky mouthfeel. Unbeatable flavor.
This is their Mephistopheles Stout, coffeed.
If you like stout and you like porter, this is for you!
Best beer, hands down, at EBF Boston! Bottle this and sell it, Avery, please!
