A - clear copper amber with 2 finger white fluffy head with good retention and good lacing

S - pine resin, caramel malts, touch of grass, hint of booze! Citrus notes esp. Grapefruit rind.

T - a piney hop forward DIPA with a nice balance of sweet malt but with a fairly bitter finish and an appropiate presence of booze.

M - medium body moderate carbonation, chewy

O - pretty darn bitter, though well balanced with the malt and booze, I'd drink this when I've got a hankering for an ipa

Amber yellow in color with good clarity. Poured with a thick white foam that slowly reduced to a thick cap leaving sticky lacings on the glass. Slightly pungent citrus grapefruit hop aromas with pine hops and sweet caramel malt beneath. Hop pungency increases as this warms along with the introduction of slightly boozy notes. On the thinner side of medium bodied with slightly subdued carbonation that creates a delicate creamy feel. A fabulous combination of tangy citrus and pine hops which is a rarity. Finishes crisp and dry with a light lingering pine bitterness and lighr boozy notes.

Enjoyed on draft at the brewery:

solid golden hues; small head; good solid lacing; delicious pine smell; very noticeable grapefruit flavor; love and taste the 93 IBUs; subtle hop nuance that makes it accessible to non-hopheads; still big and danky; well-hidden ABV; lighter in 'hop-punch' than Avery's Maharaja; great balance here

A-Pours mostly clear with a large, fleecy head. Head leaves light freckles of lacing along the glass. Head also retains quite well.

S-The nose starts off with a fruity-hop festoon. Tropical fruits and then… pine all over the place. Malt is simply an augmentation for the hop aromas. Malt adds some sweetness to the fruity hops and balances out the pine a bit.

T-Hop forward. Exotic fruit begins the hop expedition. The fruit morphs into a full stage of bitter and oily pine. The pine is followed by a remarkably articulate grassy finish. Bitter, clean, fresh, green grass. Caramel and sweet biscuit malt is more noticeable here than the aroma. The transition between the hoppy flavors is exact.

M-Goes down easy for an 8.5% ale. All the flavor drowns the booze. Moderate to high bitterness. My glass emptied itself with extraordinary efficiency.

O/D-I must say, I think I liked this more than their Maharaja. Less syrupy and surprisingly more hop-stressed. I really enjoy both duganA and Maharaja. This leans more towards my preferences of the style. I have wanted to try this for a couple years now. Finally!

Pours a coppery colour, with a beige head. Nice lace. Aroma is piny, with touches of sweetness and citrus, nice resin notes. Nice bitterness, assertive but not over-done, resinous pine notes and some nutty malts. Slick and oily, full.

A nice dank IPA!

This is one of my favorite IPA's. Such a resinous beer, like drinking a beer in a ganja shop! Spicy pine flavors with a biting bitterness that shocks the conscience. I've had it on tap and bottled and both are fantastic. Avery knows how to hop the shit out of a beer!

September '12 release, 85 IBU.
Accidentally erased the first draft of this so this one will be shorter.

Orange body, white head with impeccable lacing.

Huge tangerine, lemon, citrus hop aroma leads off. Subtle pineyness is noticeable. Light sweetness.

Pure hoppiness. Tons of pine in the flavor, very high bitterness that lingers for a while. Great balance from the malt, but it is clearly just here for support.

Medium-full bodied, low-to-moderate carbonation, light alcohol bite on the finish.

Overall an excellent, mostly balanced DIPA. Warming this up brings out the malty side.

A. orange cooper color with a single finger white head

S. hoppy, fruity, some carmel notes and some yeast

T. the balance is on point, hops are present so is the citrus the alcohol is also present but faint for the ABV

M. medium body with adequate carbonation

Dugana is very drinkable, possibly Averys best beer IMO. I look forward to this twice a year.

A: Pours a clear medium copper to light amber in color with a light amount of visible carbonation. The beer has a two finger tall creamy off-white head that slowly reduces to thick film with a moderate amount of large bubbles in it covering the entire surface of the beer and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of grapefruit/citrus hops with moderate aromas of mango/tropical hops and some lighter notes of pine/resin hops.

T: Upfront there is a light to moderate amount of caramel malt sweetness. That is followed by an explosion of hop flavors - grapefruit/citrus, mango/tropical, and pine/resin. Lighter notes of bitter orange rind in the finish and light to moderate amounts of bitterness that fade slowly.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Slightly sticky.

O: Pretty well balanced between the caramel malt sweetness and the bitterness of the different hop flavors and the alcohol is well hidden which makes this a pretty easy to drink beer but I would recommend sipping it since it could easily sneak up on you with the 8.5% ABV. Really enjoyable!

This is one of my favorite IPAs and is consistently good from year to year.

A: Pours a nice murky, burnt orange with a fairly small head. Nice amounts of lacing and noticeable legs with the 8.5 ABV.

S: The smell is dank overripe fruit, citrus, floral notes and some caramel sweetness.

T: citrus and dank hop flavor. There is a nice sweet middle that is chased away by a balanced bitter finish. This reminds me of a heavier, slightly more malty Duet.

M: perfect carbonation but maybe a touch on the heavy side to be labeled as an IPA, but what do I know?

D: Drinkable at 8.5% but the heavier body makes this a very filling IPA and the ABV does come out as the beer warms up.

O: A fantastic beer that I wish I could get year-round. I would definitely love to try this on tap. Must try.

A: Pours a nice dark orange body with a finger thick white head, that quickly fades and leaves a bit of lace on the glass.

S: There is a nice amount of spicy hops and some sweet grain. For some reason it has a sweet and sour sauce smell if you really look for it.

T: There is a strong amount of pine flavor from the hops and sweet grain as the beer lingers.

M: This beer has a nice fully body with a tad bit of crispness on the back of the throat as the beer goes down.

O: This is a very nice beer. Has a strong hoppy flavor and a fantastic fully body. I also like how the beer lingers for a long time without getting old.

Had on tap at whole foods Columbus circle- pours a very clear golden color with very little head, very little retention and nice swathes of lacing. I think there would've been more head had the bartender poured a little better.

Nose is not particularly strong- light sweet caramel, a little bit of lemon hops, some yeast.

Taste is a little more complex- slight bitterness up front with a little lemon, followed by caramel notes, then some earthy yeast mixed with the lemon hops.

Mouthfeel is nice- quite drinkable for a DIPA but maybe too mild. Light body, full carbonation, a tiny bit of resin. This is a good drinkable beer but in my estimate, not really a DIPA and more like a high ABV pale ale.

A 22oz bottle with no visible date. I'm still puzzling over the meaning of the name - I get the impression it relates to India but it's hard to tell. The label states that this contains 93 IBUs - clearly an intense brew!

Poured into a Duvel tulip (twice). A rich, hazy orange-amber hue with visible sediment and good carbonation. Produces a huge head of creamy white foam that hangs around for a while before reducing to a surface layer. An overwhelming hop aroma makes love to the olfactory senses - superb! Notes of grapefruit, orange, peel, citrus, pine, resin; a smorgasbord of hop notes to distract you. This is underpinned by a hint of caramel malt and dry yeast - understated but enough to provide balance. The alcohol is well hidden. Fantastic!

Tastes of intense aromatic hops with a spicy, fruity character and a bone-dry bitterness on the finish. Notes of pine, resin, grapefruit, orange peel, citrus, subtle caramel and a hint of earthy yeast. Slightly sweet, with a hint of brown sugar in the background. Very dry and exceptionally bitter. Mouthfeel is smooth, tingly and unusually spicy - the sensation on my tongue reminds me of a good chilli. Full-bodied and nicely carbonated. Highly astringent - dries the palate thoroughly. A powerful aftertaste of bitter aromatic hops.

Wow - what a brew. The perfect balance of hops, bitterness and malt is something that US brewers do so well - if only there were more beers like this over here. A truly magical experience; I can't praise this beer enough. If you are lucky enough to have a chance to try this, don't pass it up. Superb.

A - pale orangish amber with a great, short, white head

S - grapefruit with some faint bread

T - red grapefruit, faint bread, heavy piney bitter finish

M - medium bodied, smooth, a bit heavily carbonated

This beer was delicious. The malt and hops have great balance. It's sweet but also has an intense bitterness to it. It's was simplistic but deep. I thoroughly enjoyed this beer.

Picked up a fresh growler of this at my nearest Whole Foods. Review is from notes taken on 9/29/2012 and poured from the growler to a pint glass.

Appearance: Pour is a solid copper color with some nice golden glow to it; starts with a short 1/2 finger, slightly off white head that fades quickly to a thin, incomplete skim floating on the surface; body is very clear and shows moderate carbonation; plenty of lacing is left behind in spots and swaths.

Smell: Very nice and hop forward as it should be -- plenty of sweet citric hops are pouring out of this -- definite some juicy orange, possibly grapefruit; faint, grainy maltiness in the background. Very solid.

Taste: Pretty much just like the nose -- the hops are up front and they start out sweet and juicy, but as the beer lingers on the palate, a bit more of the oily hop resiny bitterness sneaks in; well balanced with some of the grainy maltiness, but essentially a hop forward America Double.

Mouthfeel: Body is just a little lighter than medium in terms of weight; carbonation is good, not too sharp, but the body, for some reason, is just a touch watery; a thin, sticky coating is left all over the palate and belly is left just a touch warm.

Overall: A very solid beer - super refreshing and doesn't quite weight you down like some of the bigger DIPAs will do. Well worth the bones for the 64 oz. growler, and it won't be a problem to finish it off over the course of the weekend.

On tap at Barbara's At The Brewery in Los Angeles, CA.

Pours a clear gold with a foamy orange-beige head that settles to a small cap on top of the beer. Thin rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, and citrus zest. Taste is much the same with a slightly herbal finish. There is a medium hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp but medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer that is tasty and easy to drink.

This IPA is the standard by which I judge all others. Not excessively hopped and true to its heredity, it offers a perfect balance between full body and rounded, clean flavor that is very pleasurable to drink and thirst-quenching. In my opinion, the perfect flavorful brew for hot weather. It doesn't get any better than this as an IPA, and stand's up well against any other ale as well. In fact, any time I had this available for friends, they'll drink me out DuganA before drinking any other.

Pours a firey orange with a nice thick, foamy off white head. Nice lacing. Alright, now I am getting those tropical fruits. Wonderfully sweet and piney. Wonderful tropical fruits like I hoped to find, some bitter pine in the tail end. Think I can sense a little malt hiding underneath everything, but definitely finding it to be hop forward. Flavor brings me back to what I have come to expect from Avery and their IPA's with a bitter musky earth and pine identity. This time, though, I do get the tropical fruits in this. The malt underbelly is there in the flavor too, and needed to counter the bitterness of the hops to a degree. A nice creamy, fuller mouthfeel with good activity. Overall, definitely my favorite IPA I have tried from Avery. Glad I gave it another go around to find what I was missing from it initially. That said, I still find myself not to be too drawn to Avery's approach to IPA; they are good at what they do, just not a fan of the bitter profile they guys do.

A - Golden with excellent head retention and good lacing

S - Lots of citrus with some sweet malt

T - Citrus- tropical(A mix of tangerine/grapefruit/pineapple/mango) Hops that are intertwined with perfect malt balance, sweet but smooth. Some piney notes on the back end

M - Full bodied with a high LOW carbonation. Perfect for style

O - What an excellent Imperial IPA. I have had it on tap before as well, such a bold beer

I tried DuganA last year but it wasn't fresh so I didn't review. Last year I found it a little weet and syrupy, but fresh it was much better.

A: A nice straw golden with a nice two finger head in a piraat tulip.

S: I get a lot of fruit and malty breadiness.

T: Great malty backbone with a tropical hoppiness up front and a nice bitter piney-ness in the after taste

M: Not overly carbonated, full and rich as any double should be

O: I enjoyed this and will drink it fresh when I can. Although, having had it a little older, I feel like this beer falls off fairly quickly.

this is baller, possibly better than the maharaja. well, i shouldnt say that, its very different but equally powerful as a high priest hops. it pours a relatively unassuming mostly clear orange tinted brassy color, with a tall but airy white head. it smells like straight resin. its big oily west coast hops and the essential oil semisweet component trumps the bitter in the nose. not so in the taste though, as the bitterness really comes to the fore. its like grapefruit rind, fresh cut hay field, and english tea biscuits. the hops thought gives this beer a unique mouthfeel. its made heavier by the oil content, which is way way up there, but the lively carbonation makes it not feel quite so dense. i dont think its as beastly as the maharaja in terms of drinkability, but it definitely compares as far as raw hop intensity goes. this is an outstanding beer, harder to find than it should be i feel like, but one i will undoubtedly buy again. its a massive ipa with a light malt profile that really lets the chemistry of the hops do the leg work. one of my favorite big ipa's in awhile. yum!

This beer poured a perfect hazy orange color into my Flying Fish tulip glass with a two finger pure white head. The head left crazy lacing on the glass. From just appearances alone, this looks like a beer I’m going to fall in love with. On the nose, I got definite citrus, specifically grapefruit with a hint of booze and spice. On the taste, the first thing I think is how freaking good this is. It’s been awhile since I’ve had a great DIPA and this really hits the spot. The taste had definite notes of grapefruit and pineapple with the booze really well hidden. The malt came through at the end with some caramel sweetness that is complemented by the high carbonation. The finish is all citrus and amazing. It wasn’t as sticky as I expected. A really smooth West Coast IPA. I would have this again in a second. This is exactly what I needed tonight.

appearance: clear yellow-orange, close to the color of honey. Thick fat off white head and lacing.

Poured from a 22 ounce bottle to a tulip glass

pours a non-transparent burnt orange, visible carbonation, with a 1/4 inch tight white bubbled head. Pungent grapefruit juice on the nose, melded with a big toffee and caramel malt. Sweet citrus hop flavors, some peach and bready malts. Juicy peach and grapefruit, tons of citrus, big bready malts coming through on the taste. Full bodied, a tart sugary feel, very dry on the tongue that leaves nice and bitter. This is just a perfectly balanced DIPA, tons of bittery mouth puckering citrus hops with big bready malt backbone, all in all a damn good beer.

22oz bottle served in a snifter.
no freshness info. (grr...)

pours a slightly cloudy, bright orange/amber shade yielding a good 1" of frothy off-white head; very solid retention and great lacing. nose is headlined by a nice citric/tropical hoppiness with a touch of pine, but then a big malt showing - the kind of distinct, perhaps too much maltiness that suggests a past-its-prime IPA/DIPA. not a good omen.

the latter element is confirmed in the taste. the hops characteristics pull through, but almost serve as a backdrop, superseded by a strong caramel maltiness. not bad, but i'm pretty sure this would be much better fresh. medium bodied mouthfeel with average carbonation; has a slight syrupy element.

overall there is definite potential here, though as it is i find it more of a middling DIPA. again, i suspect a fresher bottle would deliver elicit a more positive experience. would be open to a revisit.
