Had this at the Houston Flying Saucer during their 10th birthday party.

A - Poured a copper color with an off white head

S - Is of citrus and pine hops on caramel malt

T - Follows the nose with the citrus and piney hops on the caramel malt base

M - this beer has a smooth medium body with medium carbonation to it

D - This is an awesome beer on cask it makes the flavors and body nice and smooth I could have drank this all day if the cask didn't kick in no time at all this is a must try if you ever see it on cask

Cask at the Brick Store.

Pours a hazy copper color with a one-finger cream-colored head. The head eventually settles into a thin layer on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of smooth caramel malts with hints of lighter pale malts, all overshadowed by pine hops. Moderate amounts of citrus hop aromas also waft in and out.

Tastes similar to how it smells, although not quite as smooth. Sticky caramel malt flavors kick things off and are joined quickly by loads of pine hop flavors. As with the smell, citrus hops make an appearance, this time midway through the sip. The flavor profile turns slightly bitter with the addition of a more earthy hop flavor before carrying through to a solidly bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is very good. It's got a smooth thickness with grainy carbonation.

Drinkability is good. I had no problems finishing my glass and could have another.

Overall I thought the flavor profile wasn't impacted much by the cask-conditioning however the mouthfeel was thickened up nicely. Worth a shot in whatever serving type you can find.

Poured at cellar temperature from a bomber into a snifter. After decoding the date code on the bottle, I figured out that this beer is eight months old. Too old for an IPA, some may say. However, as I'm about to explain, this one has held up exceedingly well.

There is a sizeable two-finger head of delicate white foam. The liquid looks like unprocessed honey. It's got that golden amber hue and I can see lots of sediments floating in suspended animation throughout the beer. The appearance suggests that this beer obviously must have some serious substance to it!

The aroma is fairly simple, but nevertheless great. I'm tempted with the perfume of sweet citrus fruits, pine needles, and glorious hops. If you've smelled great imperial IPAs, then you know the scent.

The taste takes on the aspects of citrus and hops I detect in the smell, but there are other things here as well. Behind the tangy, delicious citric hop taste is some kind of exotic, zesty, spicy herbal character that transports me to IPA nirvana. There is a hot aftertaste that might be from the 8.5% ABV, but it FEELS like it's coming solely from the mysterious spiciness. A pleasant bitterness lingers long after each sip. The taste couldn't get much better than this.

It doesn't feel overly carbonated, which is perfect for letting the powerful and complex flavors shine through.

This is a fantastic double IPA. Thoroughly pleasurable to drink.

Appearance: It has a nice cloudy golden/orange color to it. It has a nice off-white head that dies down moderately and leaves some lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of grapefruit, piney resins, floral notes and some sweet toasty and caramelly malts

Taste: Like the aromas, it has grapefruit, some citrus, alot of piney resins with some toasty malts and some sweet caramel.

Mouthfeel: It has a low carbonation with a nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with good flavors and aromas.

22 oz. bottle purchased in the greater Washington D.C. area, unknown birth date (but according to the website brewed most recently in January) poured into a 3Fs Teku long-stemmed glass, drank 4/3/13 two hours.

A: 4.25 - goldenr-brown coloration, minimal clarity (can't see or read through...assuming due to hop haze), white one and a half finger head dissipates very quickly into subtle glass lacing, mild perceptible alcohol legs

S: 4.5 - wow, definitely classic Avery hop aroma after Maharaja...could probably also be classified as West Coast too...lots of dank pine, resin, grapefruit, lemon peel...

T: 4.75 - wallop of bitterness on the anterior tongue (definitely tasted the 93 IBUs but resolved on subsequent sipping)..again, .grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple flavors that was very dry at first, but, after warming, the biscuity sweet malts lingered, picking up alcohol tones consistent with 8.5%, lingering dank (but not cat pissy albeit I have little experience drinking that...) bitterness on the back of the tongue that is damn pleasant!

M: 4.5 - mild-to-moderate body and carbonation, juicy mouthfeel, I think that would go fantastic with a spicy Indian dish (maybe the logo planted that idea)

O: 4.5 - Maharaja's bad ass little sister; I am pulling out lots of Simcoe, Centennial, Chinook dankness, so I don't think that the recipe is all that different than its regal big bro; definitely worth hunting down when your local package store doesn't have Maharaja on hand or you want something a little bit lighter/less overwhelming on the palate

A: Burnt orange color with a one-finger head that settles to a nice lacing
S: Tons of grapefruit, some pine, florals and a hint of toasted malt grain. Intense and quite nice
T: Grapefruit again, a solid malt base, a touch of toffee, floral notes. Bitter but balanced
M: Medium+ bodied, hop bitterness but a nice malt balance, a LONG finish. One of the rare beers where the mouthfeel may just be my favorite part
O: Very well made, I will definitely make this a regular purchase if I see it on the shelves

Hazy copper with orange hue.

Piney hop aroma contrasts malty sweet back.

Definitely full-bodied. Fruity flavor is not juicy but compliment bitter hop. Grapefruit and pineapple.

Oily hop resin with floral hop in the nose. Long dry hop finish.

Fantastic double IPA. Quality product and great marketing label. Stands with the best of them. Well done craft at 95 IBU. I will buy again.

22 Oz bottle poured into a snifter

A- Pours a brilliant hazy orange color. A one finger of a white head and some alcohol legs.

S- Orange, grapefruit, pine, lemongrass all complimented by a sweet malty backbone.

T- A sugary sweet citrus bomb at first. This beer has massive orange and grapefruit tones as well as underlying pineapple and lemon. It's not quite as stingingly bitter as I expected as the thick sweetness of the beer balances quite well. The malts are sugary as well as plain an quite crisp leaving emphasis on the hop flavors. A very pleasant DIPA.

M- A good body to this beer and well disguised alcohol. A pleasure to drink.

O- One of Avery's best offering's. I enjoyed this beer more then their better known Maharajah. A Great DIPA.

Poured from $7 bomber to oversize wine glass while watching the Denver playoff game.

A Cloudy, caramel colored body with little carbonation on a thin white head. Not quite translucent, but looks quite nice in the sunlight.

S Whoa yeah, strong floral and citrus hops in this lady. A slight earthy dankness and even a bit of sweet , like pineapple. OK must taste this NOW!

T BangaBang, its hoppy alright. A fleeting sweetness in the front becomes a rolling resiny bitterness that smacks your bitch up. Like it , like it allot.

M Medium to light body , and lightly carbonated with a dry bitter finish

I was happy to enjoy this excellent DIPA. Avery is readily available in my region and I will look to try others from them. Now to savor the last Pliny during the Packers defrocking of the Falcons .

Copper color, little head but nice lacing.

Smells of grapefruit and pine, what I expect from a DIPA.

Taste is spot on with the smells, seems a little minerally as well.

Nice carbonation, medium bodied.

Overall a great DIPA, like it more than Maharaja which is a good representation as well.

This poured out as a deep copper color with a thin white hea on top. The lacing was scattered and the retention was light. The smell of the beer is loaded with grapefruit, pine and other fruity citrus aromas fro all the hops in there. The taste of the beer is great, lots of big hop flavors. The mouthfeel is oily, slick and nicely carbonated. Overall it's a great IPA. Worth drinking again.

Pours an orange caramel, solid head, little presence of bubbles rising from the center.
Smells of pine and fruit, underlying malt, zesty citrus peel, apricot, nice.
Taste is citrus (definitely from the grapefruit stand), some earthiness, and dank. Hops are piney and lingering. Warming, spicy bitter burn.
Nice DIPA, heavy on the earthy bitterness, but the overall execution is what counts, and this is solid.

Bottled August 26, 2012.

Light amber in colour, orangey. Good-sized white head. Good lacing.

Aroma contains citrus fruit, primarily grapefruit, as well as lemon and orange. A bit of toasted malt.

Flavour has some toasted malt and large dose of grapefruit and orange, pine resin. A bit of booze, more than expected in a beer of this strength. Quite bitter.

Medium bodied, moderate to strong carbonation. Quite oily.

Overall, quite a good DIPA. Lots of hops in this one, for sure.

Appearance: Pours a fantastic golden orange…dense, not overly transparent, though I can see some bubble action in the middle (it does settle down after initial pouring making it clearer)…a nice layer of just off-white head formed and maintained…tons of sediment floating about as well…(4.5/5)

Smell: Floral hops, tangerine, grapefruit, orange, pineapple…fresh and zesty…pale malts…”inviting” doesn’t tell the whole story, my mouth is now watering…(4/5)

Taste: Awesome! Tons of citrus hops, much like the nose…I’m tasting grapefruit, orange, mandarin, smooth pale malts…it’s fresh and lively…a nice, piney resin flavor happening here, tingling the outside of my tongue…some floral hops bitterness in the finish…exceptional…(4.5/5)

Mouthfeel: Smooth, medium body…great carbonation…oil/resin on my palette…some bitterness and a little dry in the after taste…(4.5/5)

Overall: A great brew, well worth the price tag ($7.99 for 22oz)…the flavor is fresh and zesty, the pale malts bring a nice backbone allowing all that hops to flourish...tons of flavor that hide the ABV nicely, this is a great example of an exemplary west coast IPA (or Double IPA)…citrus and piney resin leave me wanting more after each sip, I could drink this for days…Definitely get this again and I highly recommended to any hop head for experimentation…(5/5)

Caramel amber with 1-2 fingers of rocky white head that lasted for a decent amount of time. Wet, foamy uneven lacing on the sides. Good retention on the top.

Smelled a potent whiff of floral hops up front, followed by citrus hops (grapefruit, lime, tangerine and orange). Wow! Great smell.

Taste was reminiscent to the smell, but not nearly as good. Got more lime and pine hops than floral and citrus. Maybe cascade hops? Bitter resin hops on the tongue after.

Medium-to-light body. Oily texture. Average-to-above average carbonation. Very bitter finish.

A very good beer by Avery. Smell was the best part, but it went down well, too.

APPEARANCE - Bright, copper colored and clear. Full head with excellent retention.

SMELL - Hop-forward and sweet citrus.

TASTE - Nice balance of hop and malt. Hoppy, but not overly. Mild sweetness with orange and grapefruit. Mild alcohol flavor. Floral.

MOUTHFEEL - Medium-thick, full and rich. Correctly carbonated.

OVERALL - Labeled IPA, but nearly a DIPA. Like a toned-down Maharaja, with less alcohol, less hops, less malt. This may be my favorite beer at the moment. Have had several times, both in the bottle and on tap. Preferred the bottle, but it could have been the glass choice (I’m not a big fan of the traditional pint glass). Perfectly balanced for this style.

One sitting was immediately following a Pliny the Elder. I prefer the DuganA.

A - Pours a fairly clear golden-orange with a finger of frothy white head. The head fades down at a normal pace leaving behind some nice lacing.

S - Aroma is a mix of grapefruit, pineapple, orange, citrus, pine, and grassy hops with some sweet caramel and biscuit malts.

T - Starts off with a mix of grapefruit, pineapple, and orange hops with some building bitterness and some sweet caramel malts. Through the middle, some grassy and pine hops come through with some resiny bitterness and some biscuity malts. The finish is a mix of grapefruit, orange, pine, and grassy hops with some resiny bitterness and some sweet bready malts.

M - Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a dry and bitter finish.

D - Very drinkable. Good overall balance with a nice hop profile from start to end.

Pours a clear copper with a thin white head. Lacing is better than decent. The hops are spicy, somewhat like cinnamon, floral, lemony, there is also some well baked biscuit and wheat bread. Malt taste is light, more like white bread crust, and fades to hop flavor and bitterness. All the aforementioned hop aromas come through in flavor, and the bitterness is earthy, barkish, and serious. Also lingers at the back of the tongue for a while. The finish is dry, the feel appropriate for the style.

This is the spiciest IPA I've ever tasted or smelled. Man, I can't really pinpoint the flavor or smell, but it's just this side of curry. Great, would drink again.

Pours a nice apricot ale with a solid sheet of light soapys. Smells piney, resiny, grapefruit, vitamins, some sweet malts and a good dose of BO. I like the nose. Taste is bitter, grapefruit again, resin and pine. A heavy dose of malts counter the hops well. Medium bodied with sharp carb and a dry finish. Good beer, wish there was a bottle date.

Bomber from Total Wine, poured into a pint glass.

A: Pours a hazy dark tangerine, no bubbles, very thin head creamy with little lacing.

S: Piney, citrus, caramel malt, little dank.

T: First thought was I poured juice instead of beer. This is the most citrus I have ever tasted in an IPA, very different, and not what I expected from a Double IPA. Hops are there, very piney. Very light booze flavor, expected more. As it warms, the malt comes out, sweet and caramel. A little biscuit there too.

M: Medium mouth fill, high carbonation/fizzy compared the very light head.

O: Great beer, would buy again. Hoped for more considering Avery IPA is one of my favorites, and hoped this Double IPA would be twice as good. Instead, I'd rather have a regular Avery IPA and hold out for a Maharajah.

Clear amber/orange hue on the pour. Very short off-white head with weak retention. Pungent aroma with lots of fresh dry hops, creamy malts, pine, caramel and orange zest. Rich hop bite and smooth caramel sweetness on the first sip. Orange rinds, roasted nuts and pine compose a lot of the body. Drier, hoppy, zesty finish.

Poured into my holy grail ok, ok, it just my Chimay snifter Vicki Foxx drank out of….poured out a nice burnt gold color filled with small particles, you might call fermentation but I call dinner. It’s very inviting and simply says, “I rock”. It’s topped off with a light and fluffy white head that dissipates rather quickly, but leaves its mark, a nice lacing that seems to keep the glass at bay just so you drink it up! Go Lacing! Mild carbonation, but boy do those bubbles carry an aroma to your nose. I smell apple, grapefruits, mild lemons, caramel, wait, wait, is that a Christmas tree I smell in the background…get out of here it a Starburst filled with beer! My nose has left the face and is headed for Colorado. My first sip, I swish it around, not very impressive, but I can detect a medium to heavy mouth feel, a mild favor on the tip of my tongue, it’s a hopped filled world after all folks. I do pick up some mild wheat here and there, some bready flavors (without the butter) but clean over all. Not bad for 93 IBU and it goes down pretty well, just like a well lubed PSL54C!

Reviewed from notes. Poured from bomber into a TBBC pint glass.

A: Pours a hazy dark gold, moderate visible carbonation with a thin white head.

S: Citrus and pine hops, with bready & caramel malts.

T: Follows the nose. Citrus hops, then sweet and bready malt flavors with some boozy character. Finishes fruity sweet with a bit of booze heat. Hang is hop bitterness with a little attenuation from the booze.

M: Medium to slightly heavy body, a slick mouthfeel, and medium alcohol presence for style.

O: A good beer, but not outstanding for style. I would drink another if offered.
