Thanks to hopdog!
Appears a hazy dark brown with a small tan head that slowly fades into a mild cap. Spotty lacing is left around the glass.
Smell is of cherries, strawberries, rhubarb, raspberries, vanilla, caramel, prunes, and cocoa.
Taste is of the mentioned aromas with wild berries, vanilla, cocoa, and brown sugar...deeply complex and top notch.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, sugary, tart, fruity, and semi-dry in the finish.

L:. Pours a dark brown black purple with a small tan head that dissipates rather quickly, with a finger or two of lacing.
S:. Toasted caramel and brown sugar, notes of raspberry and strong red wine grapes.
T:. Strong toasted caramel, brown sugar, notes of berry, strong red wine, some tart/sweetness, a strong booze.
F:. Smooth low carbonation, bigger body.
O:. For this beer being 12 years old, it has held up very well.

A 12oz bottle from the Brickstore Pub cellar, Decatur GA. Bottled on date of 2.10.2018. 694 cases. Barrel aged series #1!
L - Dark brown with half a finger of head, tiny bit of lacing. Impressive for 9 years old
A - Zinfandel, wild yeast strains, slight sourness
T - very wild. A touch of tart, and a does of Zinfandel Barrel. Brett yeast strains
F - Light body and carbonation. This beer is 9 years old so to be expected
O - well done and enjoyable. A peak into what is to come from Avery down the line. They are now 49 varieties into the Barrel Series. Glad to have found this gem!

Dusting off my reviewing pen to log this near 9-year-old beer
Poured into a Biere de Femme mini snifter. Label says Bottled Feb 10 2009.
A- Pours a mostly opaque dark brown color with nearly no head, just a small patch of surface foam. Resilient lacing leaves small clots behind.
S- Sharp acidity and dark roasted malt. Has a bit of vinous, wine-like quality to it. A little musty. Not much oxidation which is surprising.
T- There's a big dose of Brett that I didn't catch in the aroma. More tart than sour. Some barrel character in there but it's pretty distant, probably due to the age of the beer. Also some roasted malt but, overall, there's just not a whole lot to it. A little of that red grape/wine essence starts to come through as it warms.
M- The little zing of tartness I got on the first sip was fleeting. As the drink progressed it just felt limp. Medium-low carbonation and a medium body.
O- Always interesting to try a beer whose age is nearing a decade. While I don't know what it was like when fresh, I can say my bottle is plenty drinkable at this point. However, there's not much depth of flavor. Just some Brett, malt and light tartness. Not an exciting experience but a good one nonetheless.

Pours like a Belgian Dark Strong or a Quad, fluffy beige head but opaque cola body and very little lacing or head retention to speak of.
This is getting interesting from the start, prunes, black currant, oak, white wine, cork and a mustiness that reminds me of guest blankets or a seldom used linen closet.
To my shock this has lost all acidity, the oxidation is evident leaving a newspaper-y finish with hints of vinegar and soy. I could leave it at that and say it is terrible but there is alot more going on here. I feel like the sourness being peeled back allows the drinker to delve the nuances of barrel aged sours can be without the acidic distraction. There's licorice, and a fruitiness that is reminiscent of cherry cola, oak is evident, gentle wine tannins and Brett presence that has embraced the musty attic and leather funkiness.
The body is a little syrupy and sticky and the complex nature of this beer makes it way harder to put down than the typical sour where the acidity is refreshing and on blast.
This one is on the way down but I am really glad to have had the opportunity. The first in the Avery Barrel Aged series is a doozy but it also displays their brewing prowess and how much they have dialed it in with some of the releases now. I cannot in good conscious rate this as a top tier beer other than for the novelty of what it is. That being said if you have the opportunity to come across a beer like this (or any beer for that matter), try it, fuss over it, appreciate it for what it is because this is liquid art.

Brown beer, barely a head forms, extremely minimal. Didn't smell tart or sour, really reeked of alcohol.
Taste had acetic notes, vinegar, musty brown oud bruin kinda burton thing going on here, I immediately don't like it. A little wood and vinegar just won't go away. This was a bad beer, would not recommend.
