Poured this American Brown Ale from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. Poured dark brown color, produced a huge tan head, lacing and retention was excellent. The aroma consisted of toasted malt and carmel. Medium bodied, there was a foundation of roasted malted grain, sweet caramel and nuts. Semi dry finish. Overall this is an awesome American Brown Ale- It may be my new standard bearer- Awesome aroma and flavor profile.

A: beautful deep cherry wood color, minimal head - maybe one finger.

S: smell is off putting. Has a metallic odor, not that inviting.

T: chocolate, nutty, malty and some vanilla. Chocolate and nut flavors dominate. It's a great drinkable ale for every day. Not bitter, somewhat light and smooth. The beer is kind of flat.

M: light in weight, light on the carbonation, would like to have a little more.

O: my husband really likes this beer, he refers to it as his "easy, everyday drinking beer". I however, think its just ok. It is an easy drinker, but it is slighty disappointing. I would like to see more depth to the beer. Overall, I would drink it again, but its just ok.

Slightly warm pour yields a dark brown opaque with garnet highlights and a frothy one inch tan head that slowly dissipates, leaving sheets of lacing.

Nutty, caramelly malt and toasted breadcrust begin the aroma. There's a bit of brown sugar sweetness, pine, and a touch of citrus at the finish.

Flavor reveals deep nutty notes, toasted breadcrust, hints of toffee, and a bit of roast at the finish. There's a little sweetness throughout. Citrus fruits appear mid palate and dissipate toward the lightly bitter, fairly dry finish. Chocolate emerges as it warms.

Body is creamy and on the full side, with slight slickness and carbonation on the low side.

Good toasted malt character, a touch of hops, but definitely malt focused, as it should be. No off flavors.

12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass

A- Pours a deep brown, almost black color with about half a finger of light tan head that dissipates quickly. When held up to light it reminds of root beer. No real lacing to speak of.

S- Some malty aromas along with a little bit of a roasted smell. Not a lot going on here.

T- Nice roasted taste that has a little bit of sweetness along with a little bit of hop balance. Also catching some nutty tastes. Leaves a slightly burnt aftertaste.

M- Pretty light mouthfeel with a nice crisp carbonation. Very easy drinking. Could have several of these without exhausting your taste buds no problem.

O- Tasty brew that I could drink for hours. Didn't blow me away with flavors or complexity, but still a solid beer.

From a 12 oz bottle into a nonic.

A-The brew pours dark, walnut brown. Foam was pretty skimpy and dark khaki in color.

S-Milk chocolate smell up front with a little hit of roasted, nutty malts. As the brew warms, a little brown sugar creeps up. Not terribly fragrant.

T-Smooth, mild, chocolatey malts at first gulp. Then you get a little bit of caramel and nuttiness. The finish has just a little bit of hop kick. Very little bitterness.

M-Lighter bodied for the style with smooth, but noticeable carbonation. The finish is thin. This beer is quite drinkable.

O-There is nothing special about this brew, but it is a solid, drinkable example of the style. The chocolate smell and flavor are a little simple (as is the mouthfeel), but on a relaxing fall evening that calls for a few beers, you could do far worse than putting down a few of these.

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass

A: Pours a dark brown color with about a fingers worth of off white head, doesn't have much retention but leaves behind a nice lacing.

S: Malts, toffee and a subtle hint of hops, didn't detect anything else.

T: starts out with caramel upfront followed by chocolate and toffee finishes out with a nice touch of hops.

M: A light to medium body with a light amount of carbonation.

O: While it might not do anything amazing it is still quite a well brewed example of a brown ale.

One of the "1001 Beers You Must Try Before You Die" -- #7 of the ones I've reviewed.

Pours a mahogany brown, much as you'd expect, although a bit more red maybe than you'd expect. A nose to me that smells exactly like burnt toast, of all things, with maybe a bit of dark fruit at the bottom. (As the beer warms up the dark fruits come more to the fore.) The body has a rather "chewy" quality which I rather liked.

Flavors. This tastes, if you can imagine, like a "dry" cola -- if you took a Coke and removed all the sugar, leaving just the cola taste, you'd have this, sort of. It's Johnny One Note but a very interesting kind of one-note, I'm not sure I ever quite found that sort of flavor in beer before. The finish is thin, but not bad, a rather bracing sharpness.

I rather liked this one -- a lot of brown ales look good to me but disappoint once you actually taste them, but this one delivers on the flavor.

A - Pours with a small head of off white foam on top of a dark brown body with some clear, amber highlights showing though. The head settles fairly quickly and leaves light lace on the glass.

S - Some acidic roast malt and toffee.

T - Dark caramel and cola notes up front with some dry, dark bread. More toffee in the middle and a finish of light roast, cola, and dry molasses.

M - Medium body, moderate carbonation, and a dry finish.

D - A pretty run of the mill brown ale, perhaps a touch darker than most. Malt focused with little in the way of hop character but a balanced finish.

A: thin head on a deep clear amber body. decent lacing.

S: alot of toffee and chocolate. some caramel malts as well.

T: not only does this one capture the chocolate flavor well, the texture of chocolate can be noted. toffee, light earthy hops with a sour note. nutty notes intermixed.

M: medium body and moderate carbonation

Overall: the complexity is nice for the style and its not too bland.

Poured into a pint.

A - A nice mahogany brown with a thin, one-finger, head. A bit frothy with below average retention and lacing.

S - Some sweet chocolate and malts, seems to be caramel. Warming on the nose.

T - A nice blend here of nutty almonds with semi-sweet chocolate. Caramel malts are in attendance with a touch of hops near the end.

M - Medium body with a medium-plus carbonation.

O - I really do like a quantity of beers from Avery, namely their top shelf IPA's. This is a solid brown that I continue to revisit. Could be a bit more rounded but a good showing overall.

A: Nice dark tan foamy creamy 2 finger head that lasted almost the duration of the pour. The brew was a dark brown with a little red color; translucent and some nice lacing with the head.

S: Heavy roast malt, some coffee and chocolate with a some nuttiness

T: Somewhat dry and surprisingly hoppy up front with a toasted malt character that builds throughout the drink. The middle is kind of sweet and towards the end, there is a nice toasted malt and chocolate.

M: Nice mouth feel for the styole; perhaps a little on the light side. Carbonation is medium - appropriate for style.

O: This is a very nice example of the style that has a bouns of some hop aroma and flavor - very nice. I would buy this agin.

Dark brown - almost black - in the glass with a healthy head and good lacing on the glass. Aroma is of caramel and some chocolate malts. Hops are mild and offset by the malt. This beer is almost a dessert with carmelized brown sugar flavor. Can fall a little flat on the tongue but overall well done.

Pours a chestnut brown with red highlights. A smallish tan head develops and drops to a thick film. Decent lace is left behind.
Smell is malt, smoke/peat, toffee and a whiff of hops. Nicely balanced, not overpowering in any aspect.
Taste is malty with notes of peat, toffee, smoke, nut, maybe a bit of caramel.
Medium bodied with a light to medium effervescence. Aftertaste is a bit ashy with malt, wood and peat lingering. A good brew.

Smell was good... organic/authentic... malty... slightly nutty...

taste was nutty... perhaps i'm not a fan of the style, but I give it an average...

MF was okay...
overall I'd give it a 3.5...

APPEARANCE: Big, foamy, creamy and inch-thick head. This thing sits and sits and sits. About 15 minutes in and still, about a third of it remains. Dark brown with a little red in color and some spectacular lacing.

SMELL: Rich and smoky with a little nuttiness and smoky chocolate behind it. The great head allows it to continue smelling fairly intense for most of the glass.

TASTE: Dry and hoppy up front with a malt character that builds throughout the sip. Towards the end the smokiness and and chocolate from the nose are more apparent along with some nuts and a bit of vanilla.

MOUTHFEEL: Disappointingly thin, particularly up front. The carbonation is a bit flat as well, which leads only serves to accentuate the thin feel.

OVERALL: This is a very strong example of the style. It is also a great example of a beer that needs to be served at the proper temperature. When cold, a lot of the flavors are masked, but as it approaches 50 degrees or so a lot more comes out.

Appearance - Pours a very dark brown, blackish color with a half inch thick, tan head. The lacing doesn't seem to stick to the side of the glass well.

Smell - Roasted malts, dark chocolate, light on coffee, and a nutty character.

Taste - Basically identical to the smell.. except the coffee is a little stronger than I hoped for (I hate coffee lol). There may be a little caramel in there too.

Mouthfeel - Light-medium bodied with light carbonation.

Overall - It's pretty good. What's the difference between this and a stout? They seem so similar.

Enjoyed a can poured into a pint glass.

Pours a very nice hazy brown with copper/ruby hues. Two finger tan head with decent retention. Excellent lacing. Some sediment floating in the glass.

Caramel malts, nuts, tobacco, hints of coffee, chocolate, citrus, and grass. Moderate strength.

Rounder than other browns. Starts all caramel malt, which gives way to nutty flavors, finishing with tobacco. Finishes clean and sweet.

Smooth, resinous, and syrupy, yet sessionable. Close to zero alcohol sensation. Nicely done.

A great brown - while I'm not a huge fan of the category, I would most certainly buy this again.

Poured into a pint glass. Pours clear dark brown with a thick, light tan head. There's just enough light passing through to make out some tiny bubbles rising from the bottom. The head dissipates slowly, leaving some lacing on the side of the glass. There are aromas of dark roasted barley malt, chocolate, and coffee. It also smells a little nutty. With the taste, I pick up the roasted malt very strongly with some accompanying sweetness. I also detect the chocolate, coffee, and nutty flavors I found in the aroma. The body is medium with plentiful carbonation. The beer is smooth and highly drinkable. This is an excellent beer. It is a brown ale I would recommend.

Can served in a nonical glass

A - Dark garnet brown with ruby tint with a 2 finger ecru fluffy head with good retention and moderate lacing

S - Wheat, Malt, Nutmeg, Vanilla, earthy

T - Starts with a simple malt profile with caramel sweetness then moves into more complex woody, earthy flavors and a bit of choc and vanilla and a bit of herbal hops bitterness at the end. Just a touch of a coppery flavor on the tongue and not alcohol warming.

M - Medium body, moderate carbonation, smooth finish.

O - A nice malty brown but pretty simple for an avery brew.

t - nutty malt with chocolate notes. faint dark fruity notes and an earthy sort of bitterness. a faint roasted qulity comes out as the beer warms. well balanced.

Appearance: Murky dark chocolate brown in color. Pours a frothy centimeter’s worth of head. Carbonation appears readily present. A thin layer of head remains after a few minutes, with decent lacing.

Smell: Sweet, bready caramel malts with milk chocolate overtones. Faint scent of floral hops but not overpowering.

Taste: Strong black coffee, bitter chocolate flavors. Hazelnuts. Good solid dark malt flavor with a faint sweetness and slight smokiness.

Mouthfeel: Good hearty presence and a significant carbonation, but not too heavy. Drinks easy.

Overall: B+. Brown ales are not usually my favorite but this is a good one. Drinks like a meal. Drink it too fast and you might miss out on some nice flavor notes. This is one to take down slowly and enjoy.

Good brown ale - can definitely taste the darker malts. Didn't have much head but was adequately carbonated. Also had in a can and didn't enjoy it as much as there was too much carbonation in the can and but couldn't realize the full taste until it warmed up a bit (which of course is more drinker's error). Would drink again, but would drink out of the bottle or glass.

I have had this before but never reviewed it. Not found close to home I traveled to Vintage Estate and found one.

A - Looks like a great brown ale. Deep brown in color with clear body and a 1/4 inch of mocha head except the head leaves rather quickly to a mild lace.

S - Smell is good, dry brown malts next to nutty pecans. Smells nice.

T - Well the body is a bit lighter so it's not so creamy but flavor is a nice blast of nutty flavors mixed to nice sweet malts.

M - Medium body yet drinks rather light.

Overall I would drink this again. A nice flavor and affordable price.

Pours a very silky, creamy dark bron color with a nice head. Right at the first smell you can smell lots of vanilla, roasted barley, almost a porter like aroma but more fruity. It has a nice medium body creamy body with touch of roastiness and molasses. A bit of chocolate in the after taste! Overall its a very nice brown ale. Definetly a most!
