Presentation: 12oz brown bottle. No bottled on date. There's a dog on the label, and a little note about it. What is with the whole micro brown ale/dog thing?
Appearance: Pours a grand beer with a massive off-white/tan head that stick and retains very well. Beer colour is deep brown/chocolate with mahogony stain edges.
Smell: Aroma = absolutely wonderful. Perfumy, floral, malty, toasty, bicuity with freshly milled grain powder aromas and loads of caramel flavours that force the anticipation of a rather sweet brew.
Taste: Silky smooth mouthfeel with a medium body. Malt flavours are very even. Caramel, earth, a bit nutty, touch of roasted, toasted and biscuit followed by a near sugary sweetness, but not too sweet. Hop flavours are perceived, but not dominant ... providing balance and thin bitterness that seems to team up with the touch of roasted malt. Hint (hint) of raisin that mingles with the hops. Finish goes a tad dry with some grain notes.
Notes: A very tasty and well-executed American brown ale. If you're a brown ale fan, this is a must. Malty, balanced, tamed hop character and a wonderful aroma.
Many thanks to Arctic Liquors for the sample.

Ellie's pours out to a perfect dark, but translucent, brown. There is a bit of a fine head and loads of nice lacing. The aroma is weak - not much there, just a bit of malt.
The taste and mouthfeel are pretty darn good. It is a sweet, malty taste but more importantly, it is very creamy and soft, and not at all harsh. It burps up a very pleasant taste.
As would be expected from Avery, this is a well made and well balanced brew. I would say it is much less harsh than many "American" style brews.

Almost root beer like in color this brown ale is nicely rich in hue with a thin and bubbly head.
The aroma is of dry chocolate, roasted coffee and biscuity malt. Well done on the scent but it's rather weak.
Nice roasted body hits the tongue with coffee and distant chocolate. Roasted malt and/or coffee hits first and the finish is a bit watery. There's a nice chocolatey after taste that in some respects is as good as the roasted fore taste.
Overall, I like it. It may haves some weaknesses but it is what it is, a good brown ale.
