Can Info: "12025B7" Which translates to January 25, 2012, but seeing as how this case was delivered on February 13, 2013, I am hoping that the 12 on the can is supposed to be a 13. Have had this beer before and loved it so not too worried.

A – Light copper color with a fluffy bright white head that leaves sticky lacing.

S – Citrus, grapefruit, and pine. A little metallic. Light crystal malts come through to balance out the big pine notes.

T – Crisp, floral and sweet. Pineapple, mango and big tropical fruit notes here. Light dry pine notes.

M – Light and clean, a little bit of sticky sweetness from the malt bill but there is good balance here.

O – Nice offering from Avery. This particular beer brings some nice tropical notes not found in all IPA's, great pineapple, and mango.

Canned on the 241st day of 2012, so this has a bit of age on it for 6.5% abv IPA, served in a Founders snifter glass.

It pours a hazy pale golden straw yellow, with a billowing white head, plenty of sea-foam lacing and cling as the beer goes down. Looks good enough.

Aroma is perhaps what is effected most by the relative age on this. It's citrusy/grapefruit, with hops, and probably a bit too much malt to make this seem more fresh.

Taste is not as effected, or at least my enjoyment of the beer does not seem to be effected by the age. This tastes good. It's similar to smell but more balanced between grapefruit, hop, and malt. It's sweet and refreshing as well.

Great feel to this, super smooth up front with nice hop profile in aftertaste. Slightly pulpy and crisp.

Overall I do like this. It's not the best IPA I've ever had, but it's definitely worth a try. Refreshing and really drinkable, I could probably have several of these in a day/night and not be disappointed. Cheers.

A- Clear copper with almost white head of about a finger. Average retention, but a decent crown sticks around and very impressive lacing. Classic looking IPA

S- citrus, grapefruit rind, orange peel, bready toasted malt comes through as well. Sweet smelling

T- Big hops...bitter it most certainly is. Hops in full control from the start. Caramel malt base makes a brief appearance, but not as prevalent as nose indicates. Some yeast comes through. Acidic. A little one dimensional.

M- Mid body with fair carbonation. very dry finish.

O- Not bad. Seems pretty average for the most part. I know that some people really like this one, but it just seems to lack balance, complexity, and creativity.

Poured into a pint glass.

A: Slightly hazy straw yellow with two-finger, white, frothy head that lasted several minutes. Great lacing.

S: Citrus and pine.

T: Moderate sweetness and solid hop bitterness. Grapefruit and pine. Malt really takes a backseat.

M: Medium bodied with fizzy carbonation. Smooth and crisp.

O: I was a bit disappointed by the biting hop bitterness with none of the hop flavor. Other than that, pretty good IPA.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy, golden yellow…off white head about a finger width thick…(3.5/5)

Smell: Sweet, pale, citrus and piney…some floral notes…very mild aroma, I really have to get my nose down in there to get some smells…more or less a straight up IPA…(3/5)

Taste: A nice mix of floral and citrus hops…lemon, grapefruit, some orange citrus flavors…floral hops are mild, while the bread malt is crisp and subdued…a very straight forward IPA flavor, that’s not overly hoppy, but full on flavor…not crazy bitter, but there is some floral bitterness in the after taste…(3.25/5)

Mouthfeel: Crisp and light…very little carbonation…it’s sweet with a slight bitter after taste…nothing weighs on the palate, it really does come and go…(3/5)

Overall: While this is a very drinkable beer, there really isn’t too much to it…standard IPA, with a bit of a floral kick, but nothing drastic…it’s not a citrus hop IPA, it’s not a malty IPA, it’s not a floral IPA…it’s just an IPA, which is fine…with that said, though there’s nothing distinctive about this brew, I would drink it again happily because the flavor that it does bring is enjoyable, crisp, refreshing and hoppy…(3/5)

A- Hazy gold straw color with thick white head that lingers a long time

S-Super piney hop aroma, dank NW coast hops, hints of malt?

T-Big hit of piney hops up front, rather smooth bitterness, not much bite. Mild malt sweetness, but overall a rather boring grain bill that stays out of the way and allows the hops to shine

M-Not a ton of carbonation, but super thick foam that will not quit. Medium bodied, off dry finish

O-Nice aroma, good flavor hops, but the heavy piney hops clash with the grain bill. A slightly darker beer or maltier grainbill would be nice. With this very light colored and flavored IPA citrusy C hops seem more appropriate. Nice Am IPA

12oz Bottle from Total Wine Tampa FL for 2$

Appearance - Slightly hazy gold colour with a large size fizzy white coloured head. There is a low amount of carbonation showing and there is some faint lacing. The head lasted for only a few minutes.

Smell - Hops, malts, grapefruit

Taste & Mouth - There is an average amount of carbonation and I can taste caramel and malts mixed with hops. There is also some grapefruit/lemons mixed with wheat/bread and some corn syrup. It ends with a bit of a hop/citrus bitterness.

Overall – I expected more based on their IPA/DIPA's and the high reviews. It has a nice taste but there is nothing vibrant to the smell and it's just a tad boring overall. A decent beer but not something I'd buy again.

12 ounce can. Poured into a pint glass.
This IPA promises on the bottle a very hoppy, with the tag line HOP FREAKS UNITE! I can't say it delivered that to me, but none the less, it is a great beer. It pours a very transparent dark golden color, almost like a pilsner. There is a big white foamy head that is mostly gone after about 5 minutes but it leaves a very nice lacing as you drink it. It is much, much sweeter than most IPA's which is pleasant. The hops are not very bold upfront, masked by the very apparent malts. The mouthfeel is again, much smoother, than your average IPA. It seems more like a stronger, more bitter pilsner.

This is a very, very drinkable beer. I really enjoyed it. It has all the tastes you expect from the hop-filled IPA's but they are toned down. It's a strong beer at 6.5%, but it isn't a heavy beer. It is easy to keep drinking it.

Very different, very good.

Not sure how fresh this is, but wasn't dusty when I picked this up. Pours a real light orange yellow, and somewhat distinct for an IPA. Clear but not sparkling too. Nose doesn't give much hops, IMO, but I'm getting more defined sweetness from the malt. I expect this to be hoppy but, but not prominently either, and that's exactly what I get. Malt masking the hops, the hops coming in later, and there, but not loud. I would think in this form, this would be a brew that would please malt forward lovers of beer who want a moderate touch of hops. Freshness too might be clouding my observations.

Poured from 12oz bottle into what might be the appropriate glassware

Light colored with a yellow/orange hue , lots of carbonation bubbles , clear beer not hazy, 2 finger head that goes away fast , lacing that sticks around through the whole glass

The smell is amazing , this is one of the most aromatic best smelling beers I've had , kind of floral , grapefruit and earthy all at the same time

Mouthfeel is right on for an IPA , not to heavy not too light , medium and silky with lots of carbonation

Taste is nice and bitter , very earthy beer with the hops coming through at the end

All in all a very nice beer , Im glad I found this and can buy it local , another win for me

This beer poured out as a very nice golden color with a white head on top. The head retention and lacing were both very nice. The smell of the beer is very nice, lots of strong hop aromas with a subtle malt backbone. The taste of the beer has a great hoppy flavor. Lots of pine-like flavors. The mouthfeel of the beer is medium bodied with a nice carbonation. Overall it's a great IPA, easily available and well priced. Very good stuff worth having again.

HOP FREAKS UNITE!!! This is a lovely hop bomb. A true Yankee IPA. I loved this beer! Hope is there right in your nose as you get the glass to you face taking in that first break in anticipation of the first sip of this beer! Upon first sip you are given a lovely taste balance of hops and malt. The taste of both are not over powering in the least, very smooth. A nice head ring remains around the glass, after taste dissipating within a few minutes. I could kill off an afternoon and an evening with nothing but this in my hand!

A better canned IPA. Love the packaging.

In summer, my go-to beers are Dales & Avery out of can because I am outside 90% of the time.

Dales wins out over the long haul for better mouth feel, color, aroma and conviction, but Avery IPA is solid runner up in cans.

Appearance - very clear and light. (I prefer more left in the brew).
Smell - Citruis clean, slightly frat cellarish.
Taste - Again a little bit frat keg staleness, but otherwise light, easy IPA hoppiness with tang.
Mouth feel - slightly thinner than I like.
Overall - reliable canned IPA, if you must have IPA in can (and I do) this is one of the better ones.

Another in my series to go through as many Avery as I can come across before they leave.
Canned on day 298, so it should be fresh enough.
States "Hop freaks unite", which takes me bad to my youth and the siren call of the Grateful Dead.
Anyway, this is a nice beer and I'm a little disappointed I didn't go to it earlier. Nice fresh hop aroma. Very clear golden yellow and a big billowing head.
Flavors really shine. Great hop flavors with solid bitterness, but none to excess, although it pushes it. Rather heavy body, really, but fullness is enhanced with the carbonation. The bitterness pushed DIPA levels, but the rest stays within the bounds of style.
This is a hop lovers delight. I'll miss this one being around.

Extremely clear golden/light amber color, decent 1 finger head.

Aroma is just a bit above average for an IPA, less than I expected. Citrus and pine and a bit of alcohol.

Mouthfeel is sharp, very small bubbles, good carbonation, burns my tongue a bit though. On the thin side.

Taste is also a bit thin for an IPA. There's a good amount of bitterness and meets expectations, but the malt it a little thin. A lot of resin flavor. When it warmed there was maybe a bit of tropical fruit.

My overall feeling is that this beer has been over-filtered and under-dry-hopped. To get a beer as clear as they have, you really have to be careful and know what you're doing to not lose all the important hop aroma and flavor that really make a contemporary American IPA. I'm guessing this is why it's so crystal clear but underwhelming in terms of hoppy flavor and aroma. There's quite a few breweries doing amazing stuff in this category and I don't think this one stands out in todays crowded IPA scene. It's a bit above average, but I've had lots of better ones.

Gave it a vigorous pour into a Samuel Adams pint glass. The frothy, milky head started at about an inch then slipped down to a healthy skim. This brew is just a wee bit darker than your average lager and a shade bit lighter gold then your average IPA.

It's smelling all earthy, fruity, and floral all mixed with your customary pine and caramel notes.

The taste starts off with a nice bitter kick in the chops followed by an subtle, almost not there, malt sweetness. Not enough balance.

The mouthfeel hits it just right. Perfect carbonation. Lots of fizz, snap, crackle, and pop.

My first brew from Avery. Poured from a 12 oz bottle into snifter.

One finger thick white head with good stand. Excellent lacing. Some bubbles. Golden color with a slight haze.

Nose is floral and citrus with a good malt backbone. Just enough strength, not so overpowering or inviting. Some piney and herbal aroma is evident as well.

Taste is a bitter sweet symphony, that is just right. Hops enter the mouth and end the taste as well. However malt balances it all very well. Slightly chewy and bready sweet malts with citrus piney hops provide a nice taste. Finish is bitter dry and aftertaste is that of slight hop derived bitterness.

Mouth feel: Medium bodied feel with some oily character. Moderate to low carbonation and very light hop derived astringency which is below normal for an American IPA.

Style Rate: 4
Personal Rate: 4

Nothing stands out in this one but still very drinkable and enjoyable.

Canned craft beer is still a novelty to me so I had to pick this up.

Poured with a large frothy white head. Golden with a light haze and quite a bit sediment or hop matter floating around. At my moms so I know the glass isn't dirty ;)

This is what it's all about. Great hoppy aroma. Lots of floral and citrus (as stated on the can) and a subtle malt sweet smell in the background. Very well done.

Oooh, lots of bitterness and hop flavor. Not dominating or overpowering, quite drinkable really. Touch of sweetness up front to make this very well balanced.

Right up there for drinkability and as an IPA overall.

Appearance: Pours a bright and somewhat hazy golden orange with lots of rising bubbles. Solid three fingers of white head with good retention. Leaves a good amount of lacing around the glass.

Smell: Aroma is a nice mix of citrus and floral hops. Hints of grapefruit, orange peel, tangerine, pineapple, apricot, mango, and lemon. Floral and grassy hops with a little pine resin. Backing of sweet bready malts with hints of caramel, toffee, and biscuit. Also a little candy like sweetness. A solid citrus forward smell overall.

Taste: Like it smells, a nice ripe citrus taste with some floral hops. Notes of citrus orange, grapefruit, pineapple, lemon, apricot, and mango. Earthy, floral hop taste with a little spicy resin lingering. Solid presence of bready malts with some notes of sweet caramel, toffee, yeast, biscuit, and crackers. Taste is pretty hop forward and fairly bitter. Tastes juicy and good.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. Creamy and juicy. Finishes pretty dry.

Overall: A very solid American IPA. Good ripe citrus and floral flavors. Bold hops with a nice soft malt backing.

Avery "IPA"
Served on-draught into a weissbier glass. Reviewed from notes. Paired with chicken wings at a Buffalo Wild Wings in Colorado.

A: Pours a half finger head of nice cream, good thickness, and above average retention. Colour is a clear copper. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show.

Sm: Pleasant floral and somewhat piney hops. Clean malts. A mild to moderate strength aroma.

T: Piney and lightly citrusy/floral hops. Clean malts provide the unobtrusive foundation. Enjoyable but limited by its simplicity. Some nice cream on the open. Crisp and pleasant, but not subtle or complex. I do like it in a general sense, but there's nothing unique or special here.

Mf: Smooth and wet. Crisp. Some nice cream. Suits the flavours pretty well, but doesn't feel custom-tailored to them. Adequately carbonated. Too wet; somewhat watery actually.

Dr: Drinkable and enjoyable, but far from exceptional. I like it but it misses the mark of a true balanced IPA. It's not bold or experimental. Highly priced to boot. I wouldn't get it again, but if you're looking for a decent little IPA to have with a meal, it fits the bill.

Pours glowing dark golden color. Slightly hazy with a finger of head.

Smells like big tropical fruits, musty, earthy, juicy hops, pineapple, candy like..big grapefruit

Nice hop bomb on the palate with more juiciness, tropical fruits, huge grapefruit again, some sweetness as it warms, malt with more time. Lots of bitterness, very nice.

Bitter and dry feel, enjoyed this one.

Served on tap in a 10 oz chalice glass

Appearance- Served a golden orange beer with a one finger white head. The head had moderate retention and faded to give a decent level of lacing.

Smell – The aroma was rather sweet but at the same time hoppy as well. It had a base of tropical fruit aromas of pineapple and mango while the hoppy aromas were citrus in nature and of a grapefruit, tangerine, and lemon smell. There were also lighter notes of some caramel sweetness mixed within. Overall rather sweet and pleasant.

Taste – The taste begins more on the sweet side with a flavor of caramel, tangerine, and some mango. With these tastes is a grapefruit hoppiness as well as a bready backbone. As the taste advances the sweetness dims some and the taste bitters more as lemon and pine hop flavors hit the tongue. These flavors take the taste to the end where they are met with some floral notes, leaving a satisfyingly semi-bitter taste on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer was on the thicker and creamier side with a slightly lower than average level of carbonation. It is quite soothing on the tongue and very nice for the hoppy and lightly fruity flavor of the beer.

Overall – A quite tasty IPA with some nice sweet and hop flavors.

Golden orange with white head and some haze.

Nose is a bit more mellow than I expected it to be. Some grapefruit and piney notes.

Taste makes up for it with just a light caramel character and bready notes that really accentuate the hops. This just blasts the taste buds and finishes dry enough that you really crave another sip. Moouthfeel come off medium with some smooth characteristics amd coates the tongue. Resin notes, biscuity characters and a lingering pine finish just drive this American IPA. What else would I expect from Avery?

Poured from a 12 oz bottle to a DFH snifter globe.

A- pours a beautiful burnt orange, fair amount of hop haze. With a 1/4 inch tightly bubbled white head.

S-Sweet nectar, smells of freshly peeled tangerines, mild grapefruit, apricot, and fresh dank bud, big juicy hops all around.

T- sweet oranges, puckering grapefruit, dank resinous tobacco, strong malt backbone. Tons of exotic and tropical fruits in this.

M- medium bodied, fizzy carbonation that opens up the taste buds, sweet with a slightly bitter after taste.

O- well done ipa, takes the best of both coast styles and mashes them perfectly. Very above average ipa.

Pours a slight hazy orange gold color with a very thick foamy 2 finger snow white head that was cloudy looking and packed with bubbles, and faded slowly leaving amazing foamy lacing coating the sides; out of a can, this is as good as an IPA can look - just gorgeous. The head was so thick it was like an iceberg just starting to melt in the arctic sea and a pleasure to watch dissipating.

Smells of grapefruit, lemon, orange peel, citrus hops, sweet malt, caramel, floral hops, flowers, brown sugar, light grains, candied sugar and spices and sweet notes like booze (rum or red wine come to mind); great smelling IPA that is fragrant and potent, with just enough malts and grains to compliment the hops.

Tastes as good as it smells, with juicy citrus hops up front, grapefruit, lemon, orange peel, pineapple, sweet malt, caramel, floral hops, flowers, tangerine, brown sugar, light grains, candied sugar like Skittles, light spices like coriander and pepper, mild booze like rum, and some herbs and more hoppy sweetness; near perfect balance, a wet hop essence and tons of flavor, this is a stellar IPA.

Mouthfeel is creamy, smooth and almost oily slick, with a medium body that's chewy and borders on thick feeling, average carbonation and a bitter citrus filled finish that is tangy and full of orange, grapefruit and tangerine; very sweet and juicy finish that trails off with light grains, leaving a sweet citrus pucker. A great, great IPA that was tasty and flavorful from start to finish: a top notch IPA.
