12oz. bottle poured into a curved pint glass

A- a deep, clear gold with a finger of thick head. Nice lacing.

S- Grapefruit with some orange peel. A faint grassiness is there as well as some crackery malt.

T- Not overly complex, but it certainly works. A well blended flavor of grapefruit/orange peel/grassy hops blends with a faint sweetness of cracker type malt. Bitterness hits fairly hard on the backend for a single IPA.

M- Lighter side of medium body, medium carbonation. Very dry on the end due to the increase in bitterness.

O- A straightforward, but very aggressively bitter IPA. I've had better, but certainly have had much worse.

Love Avery, but not feeling the IPA. I have yet to try the Maharaja, so there is still hope in this category for Avery. This is a good beer , but doesn't stand up to some of the other hop champions. All in all this is a solid beer when out at a bar catching a game with a plate of wings. I'll try this again, but in a can or on tap next time.

From a bottle to a pint glass.

Pours a perfect golden color with three fingers of white head. Dies down, but keeps a decent head throughout.

Smells like a very soft IPA. Picking up the regular hops and pine, but it’s not overpowering like in others.

Very sweet and mellow. There’s a lot of carbonation, and the hop presence is there, but it’s also very balanced. Really enjoyable. V

ery light bodies. Mouthfeel is sort of silky. Very well carbonated.

Overall it was a solid beer. Not trying to do anything overly impressive, but not shallow either. I am a big Avery fan, and even though I’m not a fan of IPA’s, I’m pretty impressed by this one.

Clear tangerine with fluffy white froth.
Bright clementine with some sorbet sweetness underneath.
A bit of white bread and honey with big lemon peel and tangelo hops.
Mango finish and lemon hard candy linger.
Medium leaning to light, dry, salty, smooth.

Big IBUs and lean citrus make this more West Coast than the past few IPAs I've tasted. Malts are mostly straight sugar, but still give it more balance than something from San Diego.

Well-executed, if simple.

12 oz bottle. Julian code suggests this is 1 month old.

A: Nice color, no haze. Retention is excellent. Great looking IPA.

S: Soggy cereal, not much for hops. Expecting more of a hop presence from a fresh IPA.

T: Malt dominates the front and back. Not really what I want. Where the hell is the hop flavor?

M: Carbonation levels are where they should be. Easy drinker.

O: This is one of those beers that probably stood out 10 years ago. The game has changed, for the better, and left this one behind in the dust. The hop profile, even when fresh, is a complete joke.

A- Clear copper with almost white head of about a finger. Average retention, but a decent crown sticks around and very impressive lacing. Classic looking IPA

S- citrus, grapefruit rind, orange peel, bready toasted malt comes through as well. Sweet smelling

T- Big hops...bitter it most certainly is. Hops in full control from the start. Caramel malt base makes a brief appearance, but not as prevalent as nose indicates. Some yeast comes through. Acidic. A little one dimensional.

M- Mid body with fair carbonation. very dry finish.

O- Not bad. Seems pretty average for the most part. I know that some people really like this one, but it just seems to lack balance, complexity, and creativity.

No bottled on date

Poured into a pint glass.

A: Slightly hazy straw yellow with two-finger, white, frothy head that lasted several minutes. Great lacing.

S: Citrus and pine.

T: Moderate sweetness and solid hop bitterness. Grapefruit and pine. Malt really takes a backseat.

M: Medium bodied with fizzy carbonation. Smooth and crisp.

O: I was a bit disappointed by the biting hop bitterness with none of the hop flavor. Other than that, pretty good IPA.

12oz Bottle from Total Wine Tampa FL for 2$

Appearance - Slightly hazy gold colour with a large size fizzy white coloured head. There is a low amount of carbonation showing and there is some faint lacing. The head lasted for only a few minutes.

Smell - Hops, malts, grapefruit

Taste & Mouth - There is an average amount of carbonation and I can taste caramel and malts mixed with hops. There is also some grapefruit/lemons mixed with wheat/bread and some corn syrup. It ends with a bit of a hop/citrus bitterness.

Overall – I expected more based on their IPA/DIPA's and the high reviews. It has a nice taste but there is nothing vibrant to the smell and it's just a tad boring overall. A decent beer but not something I'd buy again.

Not sure how fresh this is, but wasn't dusty when I picked this up. Pours a real light orange yellow, and somewhat distinct for an IPA. Clear but not sparkling too. Nose doesn't give much hops, IMO, but I'm getting more defined sweetness from the malt. I expect this to be hoppy but, but not prominently either, and that's exactly what I get. Malt masking the hops, the hops coming in later, and there, but not loud. I would think in this form, this would be a brew that would please malt forward lovers of beer who want a moderate touch of hops. Freshness too might be clouding my observations.

Poured from 12oz bottle into what might be the appropriate glassware

Light colored with a yellow/orange hue , lots of carbonation bubbles , clear beer not hazy, 2 finger head that goes away fast , lacing that sticks around through the whole glass

The smell is amazing , this is one of the most aromatic best smelling beers I've had , kind of floral , grapefruit and earthy all at the same time

Mouthfeel is right on for an IPA , not to heavy not too light , medium and silky with lots of carbonation

Taste is nice and bitter , very earthy beer with the hops coming through at the end

All in all a very nice beer , Im glad I found this and can buy it local , another win for me

This beer poured out as a very nice golden color with a white head on top. The head retention and lacing were both very nice. The smell of the beer is very nice, lots of strong hop aromas with a subtle malt backbone. The taste of the beer has a great hoppy flavor. Lots of pine-like flavors. The mouthfeel of the beer is medium bodied with a nice carbonation. Overall it's a great IPA, easily available and well priced. Very good stuff worth having again.

Extremely clear golden/light amber color, decent 1 finger head.

Aroma is just a bit above average for an IPA, less than I expected. Citrus and pine and a bit of alcohol.

Mouthfeel is sharp, very small bubbles, good carbonation, burns my tongue a bit though. On the thin side.

Taste is also a bit thin for an IPA. There's a good amount of bitterness and meets expectations, but the malt it a little thin. A lot of resin flavor. When it warmed there was maybe a bit of tropical fruit.

My overall feeling is that this beer has been over-filtered and under-dry-hopped. To get a beer as clear as they have, you really have to be careful and know what you're doing to not lose all the important hop aroma and flavor that really make a contemporary American IPA. I'm guessing this is why it's so crystal clear but underwhelming in terms of hoppy flavor and aroma. There's quite a few breweries doing amazing stuff in this category and I don't think this one stands out in todays crowded IPA scene. It's a bit above average, but I've had lots of better ones.

My first brew from Avery. Poured from a 12 oz bottle into snifter.

One finger thick white head with good stand. Excellent lacing. Some bubbles. Golden color with a slight haze.

Nose is floral and citrus with a good malt backbone. Just enough strength, not so overpowering or inviting. Some piney and herbal aroma is evident as well.

Taste is a bitter sweet symphony, that is just right. Hops enter the mouth and end the taste as well. However malt balances it all very well. Slightly chewy and bready sweet malts with citrus piney hops provide a nice taste. Finish is bitter dry and aftertaste is that of slight hop derived bitterness.

Mouth feel: Medium bodied feel with some oily character. Moderate to low carbonation and very light hop derived astringency which is below normal for an American IPA.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle to a DFH snifter globe.

A- pours a beautiful burnt orange, fair amount of hop haze. With a 1/4 inch tightly bubbled white head.

S-Sweet nectar, smells of freshly peeled tangerines, mild grapefruit, apricot, and fresh dank bud, big juicy hops all around.

T- sweet oranges, puckering grapefruit, dank resinous tobacco, strong malt backbone. Tons of exotic and tropical fruits in this.

M- medium bodied, fizzy carbonation that opens up the taste buds, sweet with a slightly bitter after taste.

O- well done ipa, takes the best of both coast styles and mashes them perfectly. Very above average ipa.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass

Appearance: Light gold with a small head retained throughout drinking. Nice lacing after.

Smell: Piney with citrus notes. Slight toffee.

Taste: Grapefruit is very prevalent, and that isn't a bad thing. Some mild spice on the finish. Love how balanced this beer is, caramel and sweet malts come in to save the day right before you think it is too hoppy.

Mouthfeel: Standard medium bodied, don't taste much alcohol.

Overall: Solid beer; definitely worth trying. Would love to have this one on tap.

A: two finger white head with excellent lacing on a crystal clear golden with slight amber hue body.

S: pretty musty, a little wet sock hop like, light caramel malts, tangerine and orange citrus.

T: fairly malty with candied oranges, caramel, grassy, floral and mildy bitter hops.

M: medium body and moderate carbonation.

Overall: The beer is balanced but the hops aren't quite up to par. The bitterness verges on too much resin and wet sock hop mustiness for me.

12oz brown bottle with pry-off cap poured in a pint glass. Purchased from Whole Foods in San Antonio, Texas.

Pale gold in colour and slightly cloudy. White head is 1/4 inch on the pour but recedes to a thin ring with islands of foam. Strings of lacing here and there.

Nice juicy smelling beer. Juicy fruit gum and citrus fruit. Caramel, grapefruit, lemon, pear. Mouth-watering.

More of the aroma on the palate. Starts off nicely balanced between the caramel sweet malts and citrus hops. Hops gradually and slowly take over more and more as we get closer and closer to the finish which is strongly hopped and citrus bitter.

Medium bodied mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. A little oily feel but it gets cut by the hop presence.

Overall a delicious brew. I really enjoyed it when I was down in Texas at the end of March, early April. Top notch IPA.

Bottle into a tulip.

Shadowy rose-orange, hazed to the point of near-opacity. One finger of creamy white foam settles atop and descends pretty quickly, leaving behind a frothy ring.

Nice floral notes – roses and orange blossoms – meet orange slices, tangerine peel, honey and biscuits. This bottle might be a little old, so the malts are larger and the hops more subdued than usual, but it’s created a nice balance in the aroma.

Same deal here: overripe oranges, tangerine pith, potpourri-like floral notes. Nice bitterness settles on the sides of the tongue. Honey and biscuits from the malt, but the finish is nicely dry.

Soft medium-light body. Carbonation is mild, just a soft massage. Tiny hint of fizz. No alcohol.

Not bad, not great. A pretty standard IPA from Avery.

Bottle.

A- murky yellowish color with a slight greenish hue. One finger head that fades quickly leaves spotty lacing.

S- dank citrus hop aroma. Not much more.

T- bittersweet. A dank bitterness starts off the taste with a sweet earth taste to follow. Something is just a bit off. But still good.

M- dry. Medium carb. Finishes real dry.

O- ok. Not bad, not great. Drinkable but have had better.
I would classify as an APA, due to lack of malt presence. Light very complex, seems like it would be smooth due to the smell then smacks you with an unbalanced bitterness.

(review from notes; sampled on 02/06/11)

pours an amber/copper tone with a healthy finger of off-white head; middling head retention and patchy pacing. decent looking IPA, if nothing especially noteworthy.

nose is citric-hoppy with some mild malty notes in the background. decent aroma, doesn't exactly get you salivating, but it's solid. taste mostly follows the aroma. grapefruit, zemon zest, maybe a subdued floral note. not getting a big malty presence, though there's a touch. hoppy bitterness persists through the finish. overall, a tasty and enjoyable IPA though of the unremarkable variety - no real wow factor.

medium-bodied mouthfeel with average carbonation. good drinkability.

A - Golden, no fade, it is very clear up to light. Full foam, great head appearance.

S - Nothing overpowering, very light malty, citrus aroma. Great attractive smell.

T - Distinct hoppiness with the back up of the citrus. Carries well, makes my tongue tingle and finishes with a light bitterness.

[Best served in a Shaker glass]

The pour was a murky medium orange with some yellow highlights and a small (1 finger or less) white creamy head that was somewhat lasting, finally receding to a large puddle with a small collar which produced some excellent sheeting of lace that coated the glass.

The aroma was of floral and spruce hops, a grain malt and a soapy yeast with notes of caramel and citrus (grapefruit).

The taste was nicely bitter and lightly malty with a mild sweet caramel undertone from the start, progressing into a nice bitter hoppy taste with just a hint of citrus at the end. The flavor was around for an average time proceeding the swallow with a mild bitter hoppiness left to linger.

Mouthfeel was a few steps below medium in body with a dry texture and a mild to medium carbonation.

Overall an IPA with a light maltiness and a bit of citrus, which complimented the hoppiness very well...

Purchased from Wegmans in Warrington, PA

6pk-$11.99

Poured and enjoyed in a DFH Signature Glass

A - Beer pours with a light golden/honey color. Very hazy with noticeable "floaties". A half-finger head on the initial pour. Moderate lacing left after drinking.

S - A very mundane aroma. A earthy, slightly hoppy aroma. Nothing special.

T - The beer is pretty bitter on the initial sip with a slight backbone of malts. A very earthy, grassy taste are the dominate flavors I'm left with after drinking this beer. Rather dry. The alcohol is barely noticeable.

M - A thinnish consistency. Medium carbonation. Bitter aftertaste.

O - A decent yet underwhelming IPA. It's not a bad IPA but I prefer more of a hoppy/citrus taste in my IPAs which I'm just not getting with this beer. Worth a try but there are better IPAs out there.

Cheers!
