I've commented before on how just about any brewery can pump out a decent-tasting IPA (breweries really have to try to make an unpalatable IPA), but few can make an outstanding one. That said, Avery makes my no-contest favorite IPA around. Piney hops with little citrus and a heavy malt presence that compliments (rather than counters - malts and hops are not opposites, we must stop talking about beer like this!) the hop bitterness. Unlike most IPAs, this finishes wet, rather than the typical dry bitterness of most. The malt gives this a thicker, sticky mouthfeel more redolent of a DIPA than an IPA.
I've been drinking this for years from the bottle. The can tastes just as great and is an even better reason to pick it up.

The bottom of the can has two digit year and then Julian date. 13052. Brewed on 2/13/13. Three months old, but the beer still really held up on this can.

This beer comes in a deep rich golden orange color that quite clear. There is a small one finger head that dissipates quickly with some sticking to the glass. Nice looking beer.

The aroma has juicy orange, orange peel, some grapefruit, and some sweet biscuit malt and honey. There’s some grassiness in there too.

The flavor is pretty close to that. You get an upfront orange and slight grapefruit. There isn’t much sweetness in the malt backbone. A very dank

The finish is quite strong and dry on this one as it slowly just grows and grows and then really gives you a grapefruit peel aftertaste. Just a crisp finish, but very assertive.

The highlight of this beer is the wonderful strong finish, despite being 6.5%. In general, the beer really reminds me of Stone IPA with its color, aroma, hop profile, etc. Just an extremely solid IPA.

Love Avery, but not feeling the IPA. I have yet to try the Maharaja, so there is still hope in this category for Avery. This is a good beer , but doesn't stand up to some of the other hop champions. All in all this is a solid beer when out at a bar catching a game with a plate of wings. I'll try this again, but in a can or on tap next time.
