This brew poured with a barely there tan head that hung around for the duration of the drinking, but left no lacing on the glass. The body was a deep and dark brown. Due to the color, there was no visible carbonation on the brew. The nose was glorious. It had lots of coffee, roasted malts and chocolate, which is exactly what I expect from a stout. The taste was very much of the same that was apparent in the nose. I got a lot of coffee and roasted malts, not as much chocolate, with a creamy mouthfeel. The brew had very low carbonation and the finish lasted awhile with the roasted malts. It also had medium thickness. This was definitely a great brew and I can’t believe it’s taken me so long to try it. I will definitely have this one again.

This one starts with a milk chocolate pour that turns black in the glass. A one finger tan head recedes to a sheet pretty quickly. With the appearance of carbonation, it actually looks a lot like cola.

A light espresso and toffee scent, as well as something fresh and green, but not too roasty.

The taste is dry and quite a bit like a light roast black coffee. There's a light, brown sugar sort of sweetness. The hops are clean, not overly bitter, and balance out the bittersweet roast.

The mouthfeel, again, is nice and dry. The carbonation's refreshing on the tongue.

A solid stout, both for a summer day or these transitional chilly months.

A- Black! Has reddish hue at the bottom of bottle. Head is tan and with OK lacing. Not too out of ordinary for a stout.

S- Black Licorice, black coffee, with roasted barley and malt. Some chocolate as well. Faint alcohol note, even at 6.3% ABV.

T- Tasty! It is a well balanced beer for sure! The malts and barley are a welcoming taste on the palate. Chocolate, with a fresh brewed black coffee taste. The alcohol is present, but it is just a very subtle warmth. Very dry. It's like an Irish Stout.

M- Super easy drinking stout. It's as drinkable as a Guinness, Murphys, or Bemish! It's hard to find a dark beer with so much character in a light body these days, but the Out of Bounds Stout did it!

Overall, this beer has it all going on. Full bodied & malty with a roasted coffee and chocolate flavor. Light body for super drinkability. I'd have this any day of the week. A+ Avery!

served on-tap @ Egan's, Tuscaloosa, AL, into a pint glass

Pours a nice, dark blackish color. There's some brown at the edges, but it's hard to say just how much in the dark of this bar. 1.25 fingers of lion's pelt colored head, but it looks remarkably dense. From afar you'd think this was a nitro-tap, really. That head density yields perfect notches of lacing.

There's not much to the aroma, but what's there works. Plenty of milk chocolate and a bit of espresso. There's a light hop presence in the nose -- mostly "green" smells and not anything specific. Brown malt, non-roasted, aromas are here for sure. Solid stout nose.

The taste is quite good. Brown malt flavors and milk chocolate dominate. This is how Guinness is supposed to taste, only not quite as dry as a proper Irish Dry Stout. There's an adequate amount of roast flavor here and just enough hoppiness to balance everything out. It's flavorful but light.

The mouthfeel initially strikes me as too light, bordering on watery. But it's been awhile since I've had a non-Imperial stout beer. The mouthfeel is fine, and the lightness makes this so quaffable.

Overall, this is a good little American Stout. I wish this was 1% weaker in ABV for the amount of flavor, but still I'd have no problem knocking back a few pints of this.

12 Oz bottle poured into a pint glass

A- Pours black with red tints around the edges. A half finger of a light brown head.

S- I get a bit of chocolate in this one. A fresh hop bitterness. A lot of roasty, malty notes.

T- There is a bit of bitterness up front with a slight fruity hop character. It washes over with a lot of smokey and roasted malts that stick around in the mouth. This beer has a large complex roastyness and a great balance of hop bitterness.

M- This stout is on the bitter side of stouts but for me, it keeps it drinkable. It leaves you with a roasty mouth but its surprisingly refreshing.

O- Great stout. Im really digging the hop character and bitterness in this one.

A - Pours a very dark color with a thick, caramel colored head almost 3 fingers in width and leaves an unquestionable lace on the glass.

S - Gives off the aroma of bitter chocolate, coffee, and roasted malts.

T - Enters with a touch of chocolaty coffee and leaves with a bitter, roasted taste.

M - Thick and creamy with moderate carbonation.

O - Overall this is a great stout and I have plans on drinking more of these in the future.

A fine beer, no doubt. Just not up to the usual, higher standards of Avery Brewing Company.

STYLE: American Stout

ABV: 6.3%

LOOK: Hole-in-the-ground black with a slow run of carbonation to a decent, but not exceptional, khaki head.

NOSE: Old leather, tobacco, graham crackers.

MOUTH: Bitter coffee, crisp, almost fruity. Soft smokiness gently fills the lungs. Touch of warm chocolate and soft baseball mitt to balance.

Served on tap in a 10 oz chalice glass

Appearance – Pours a black color with thin brown head. The head faded fast leaving almost no lacing.

Smell – The smell is a wonderful mix of dark chocolate, coffee and roasted malt. Mixed with these aromas are lighter aromas of some hops as well as a light toasted nut aroma.

Taste – The taste begins with some of the chocolate detected in the nose. This is mixed with a roasted malt flavor. Together these two, with a light sweet flavor create the initial taste of roasty milk chocolate. As the taste advances however, the sweetness and some of the chocolate flavor begin to fade as tastes of espresso come to the tongue. The bitterness increases at the expense of the chocolate flavor as the taste moves to the end eventually finishing, when combined with a light nutty and more earthy hop flavor, to leave a roasted bitter flavor on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The beer is just a little bit above average thickness with the carbonation level being just below average. The lower carbonation is very fitting as it is a beer that is made to coat the tongue. The body however could use a slight boost in chewiness to really accentuate the roasted flavors.

Overall – This is a pretty good stout. It has a very nice flavor profile as well as a very nice aroma. Only thing holding it back is the lack of an lacing (which really can be pardoned) as well as the somewhat too thin of a body. Overall though it is quite nice.

Avery out of bounds stout

A- pour produces a 1 finger fizzy heead that is mocha in color. This rests atop a very dark brown/ black body. No lacing left 3

S- hot chocolate mix, coffee, peaty, slight alcohol, light hop smell, slight smokiness3.5  

T- light smoky flavor on the forefront with coffee, chocoalte, mollasses, brown sugar, and a light hop flavor also. Quite nice 3.5

M- very good mouthfeel. Carbonation on the lower end. Good viscotity 4

O- a good stout but far from great. I'd have it again but would not seek it out. 3.5

Strong, smoky aroma has tones of molasses, coffee and caramel plus a hint of licorice. It pours a deep sable with a fine-bubbled and somewhat fluffy light tan head. Flavor has notes of roast coffee and molasses with subtle tones of caramel and licorice, not as well-rounded as the best stouts I have tried but still worthwhile. Smooth texture has firm body but only average fizz. Overall, a decent stout if not outstanding. Give it a try.

A - Black, no light coming through. Finger of khaki head sticks around edges of glass for some time. Appears to have a medium body.

S - Smells of fresh coffee, bittersweet chocolate. Some malty sweetness.

T - The roastiness does it for me on this one... before that comes chocolate, espresso, a touch of hops... the sweetness is cut by a really nice roasted flavor to end with. Quite balanced, great!

M - A touch oily/slick, could have more carbonation. Really the only complaint about this beer.

O - This was a really good stout... actually closer to a porter than a stout (really what's the difference). The roasty aftertaste was my favorite part.

A finger of fluffy light tan head over a not quite black, not quite opaque, deep, red-brown body. Retention is decent, and lacing, while not thick, presents itself the whole way down.

The smell is quite nice, with a wet, floral hop presence hanging over robust toasted grain and a load of caramel.

The taste is not stunning, but it's tasty, and I must say, this is one drinkable beer! I could drink it all day and night if I had to. A lightly roasted grain is complemented by a ton of flavorful caramel and buttery toffee. But this is never perceived as being too sweet, as there is an overlying sense of floral hops to dry out the taste. There is also a slight plum flavor at work in this stout. Mouthfeel is creamy, but interestingly light bodied, giving it an oily character.

Not bad at all.

Pours an opaque super dark brown with a 1 inch foamy dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, coffee beans, and some cocoa powder notes. Taste is of dark roasted malt and some coffee and cocoa flavors. There is a mild roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slight crispness but a somewhat light body. Overall, this is a pretty good stout but it smells better than it tastes in my opinion.

Dark brown/black color with big head that is retained throughout. There is heavy lacing, and this beer is beautiful to behold. Aroma is big roasted/smoky malt. Flavor matches with initial malty sweetness, strong smoke flavor, and a dose of hops to finish things off.

Almost two fingers of dark brown foam, highly dimpled surface, looks like someone just whipped it with an egg beater, decent retention given the large amount of larger bubbles, the lacing is not thick but stays present in wide sticky sheets on the glass sides. The liquid is close to black but you come down deciding it’s really just very dark brown, touch of orange at the glass bottom. Loads of roast to the nose, still it’s the green, herbaceous hoppiness which is most evident, this over coffee, cocoa and malted milk ball accents, pronounced floral side too, the burnt qualities make it difficult to discern much fruit, its general dryness makes an impression just smelling it. Full-bodied, close to heavy but more so just dense for the sake of being dense, nothing gained texturally from it. Here the dryness takes some sting out of the roastiness, palate already deadened some. Dark roast coffee beans, cocoa to pine, dried flowers, earth and tar bring big pucker factor. The carbonation does not distinguish itself, however, doesn’t really seem undercarbonated either. OK, a pinch of cherry to red plum fruit. Could give you a little more to love here but no doubting its strong personality.

Reviewed from notes.

A. Very opaquely dark brown (nigh black), two fingers of craggy tan head lasts for quite some time and leaves tremendous amounts of lacing behind... the only thing holding presentation back from a perfect five score is that it is not truly black in color.

S. Roasted malt and coffee aroma, but I can't really find dark chocolate aroma in this one. A garnish level aroma of sweet malt does exist once the glass warms up, but doesn't quite seem to mesh as well with the other smells in the nose as I would have liked.

T. Flavor is mostly comprised of nice and strong roasted malt character mixed well with some charred malt character. There are transient dashes of herbal hopping, strange bursts of fruity sweetness, and tannic woody components from time to time. Most of the bittering seems to originate from the blackened malts in this brew. Flavor is quite lovely and complex for such a low gravity beer.

M. Creamy texture and a body on the lighter side of medium thickness, seems as though it ought to be thicker than it really is...

A nicely sessionable stout.

Pours jet black with a light tan head. In the aroma, a big roast and almost a sweet oatmeal like. In the taste, dry roast, with notes of coffee. A smooth and medium to bigger bodied mouthfeel, with a dry roast and note of pine hops in the aftertaste. A good flavor and nice hop presence in the end, quite nice.

Loving Avery lately- this is the first stout I've had of theirs.

Poured into the Red Wings pint. A luxurious 1/2" caramel/bone head forms and disappears after the first few gulps. Very sticky and thick lacing.

Dark chocolate and a light hoppiness are the aroma. Some cherry.

Taste is full of dark fruit with roasty notes and slight hop bitterness, which ends up carrying the aftertaste. The dark fruit flavors work well with a slight tartness. Sticky, thick mouthfeel.

Not very alcoholic but certainly not an easy one to drink down quickly. The picture on the bottle is fitting- this is one to drink at the bottom of the ski hill, a thick, sustaining brew. But the perfect ski beer remains Bell's Double Cream Stout, in my mind.

A good example of the style that manages to get dark fruit qualities without actually adding fruit (like the North Peak porter with cherries in it).

A- This beer pours a jet black body with a big cratered tan head that is creamy and last for a long time. The microbubbles swirl up the side of the glass.

S- The dark char of black malt has a slightly earthy dry corn note in the finish.

T- The black roasted malt has some dark fruity chocolate hints with a slightly inky character. The mellow char quality has a tart note and some dry cream in the finish as the beer warms up.

M- The medium mouthfeel has a creamy texture and a gentle fizz in the finish.

O-- The big black stout is dry with a big roasted barley gives it nice flavor but is a bit to big for a session beer but still tasty.

A: Came to the table looking almost black with a couple fingers of thick dense off white head. Laced all the way down to the end of the drink.

S: Mild burnt aroma with some light coffee and a sweetness that is maybe toffee or chocolate and berries. Bit of smoke.

T: Flavor is good with a mix of coffee, roasted almost burnt malt and mild sweetness like dark chocolate. Picking up a solid hop note with herbal and grassy flavors. End is very smooth.

M: A bit beyond medium with flat and creamy quality.

O: I enjoyed this beer a lot. For a widely available basic stout it packs a lot of flavor. Nothing incredible just a good solid brew that I will be glad to order again.

Pours a light, clear black with a big tan head that lingers and laces.

Smells of roasted grain, nutty malt, some general sweetness and coffee.

Taste is caramel roasted character up front that goes into a more roasted and bitter coffee flavor that ends on a nice, bitter finish with hints of coffee and roast....no real chocolate character jumps out.

Medium to lighter body with higher carbonation is OK, but not preferred to my taste. Decreasing the carbonation or increasing the body would be nice.

This is a nice, roasty/coffee tasting stout with some hop bitterness. Pleasing and easy to drink.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter. Pours jet black with a white foamy head which eventually fades but there's great retention and sticky lacing. Lots of coffee and chocolate in the nose; very roasty malts. There's also a hint of smoke and a touch of hops. The flavors are nice, somewhat bitter and loaded with coffee and more chocolate. The flavors are nice, but seem kind of one dimensional. Mouthfeel is nice, smooth, creamy, nice amount of carbonation and remains light. Alcohol goes unnoticed, although the lack of depth in the flavors make this one I wouldn't drink a ton of all night, althought I could considering the ABV.

If you're looking for a lighter stout that is flavorful and not too heavy, this would be a really good choice.

Poured from bottle into tall wine glass.

Appearance- Almost pitch black, but can see a hint of light when held directly up to it. A vigourous pour leads to a surprisingly large light tan head.

Smell- Coffee and mocha are right up front. This is followed by a "barn" and barley smell.

Taste- More of a chocolate taste than in the nose. Hops and barley are much more prevelant than in the nose.

Mouthfeel- Too thin and much too watery for me. Has the feel of a light pilsner and not a stout.

Overall- Completely average...I only bought a single bottle, but if I would have bought a sixer, I would be upset. A pass for me.
