Pours a deep chocolate brown, not quite black. A vigorous pour yields two fingers of slightly grayish, medium-tan head. Good retention and tons of lacing.
Smell is chocolatey, warm, and full, with a touch of crisp hops tingling the nose. Some coffee as well. The roast is nice, but not too heavy. I get a fulness that reminds me of oats.
Taste is much more noticeably bitter and sharp. Most of that seems to come from the roast, which is by far the dominant flavor; almost nothing else penetrates it. Flavor fades quick. Okay, not great. It's just lacking depth - all the flavors feel light and sharp, with nothing anchoring it.
Mouthfeel: medium-heavy body, very chewy. Medium-high carbonation that makes it feel fluffy in the mouth, almost like marshmallow. Lasting finish. Very pleasant.
A good stout. Better in the nose than the mouth. Flavor is fairly simple and doesn't thrill me.

On cask at Churchkey in D.C.
The beer is black with a small, broken head. The aroma offers some light roast and chocolate. Super smooth and easy drinking. Man, you've got to love a good cask ale...nothing like it. Light in body with a mild chocolate and roast character working together nicely. Also, a bit of bready malt and a hint of bitterness in the finish. Solid.
