this beer poured a medium copper, slightly hazy. Medium thick very dense head that left no lacing.

Big hop presensce inthe nose and a strong alcohol presence, but I got no other aromas at all. That should have been my first clue.

If a double IPA could ever be boring, this would be it. Lots of hops and little nuttiness, but overall, I was expecting more flavor underneath the hops that just wasn't there.

Next time I'll pass this by on my way to one of the better double IPAs

Had this one last night, for the first time in about six years. Thanks for sharing Ratman. Lots of sediment in the bottle, but with a pretty careful pour, this one was a fairly clear amber color, with a little bit of head. Clearly oxidized, but a nice malty aroma, with a hint of hops. Pretty nicely balanced, even with the oxidation and very diminished hops. Still a very nice beer.

Bottle 22 oz.

Poured hazy golden color with medium head that diminished quickly with good lacing.

Complex aroma of hops, citrus and caramel.

Medium body with creamy texture.

Well balanced flavor similar to aroma with a long smooth bitter finish.

Very good unusual brew.

22oz bomber bottle.

This one poured a hazy medium to dark amber color with a large sized tan head. Aromas of oranges, grapefruits, some floralness, grassy and malts. Tastes follow with a nice sweet and bitter balance. Easy to drink. Mmmm, very good.

A : Pours a hazy orange golden with basically no white head

S : Some sweet malts, faint hints of hops, alcohol

T : Some sweet malt flavor followed by a hoppy bitterness. It feels like it's in the transition from a double ipa to a barleywine but just not quite there yet

M : Low carbonation, medium bodied

D : Probably needs another year or two at this point but not bad.

Used to love this beer when it was released but that was before my reviewing days. Happened to see a large group of these staring at me on the shelves at Party Town in Kentucky so I figured hell lets see what it's doing.

Unfiltered looking russet colored bordering on copper. Head is thick and wooley and leavs sticky large encrusted lacing behind. Huge floaties are looking at me wondering what I'm doing.

Wow...quite a fine nose on this bad boy. Seems to have taken a barley wine aspect to it. Huge sweet toffeed malt aromas with golden raisin and fig appertif. Pure sugar cane, caramel, and still some floral hoppiness with a bit of lemon zest. A wonderful nose indeed.

Well one good thing about an overly malted DIPA is that after the hops are past you still have something reminiscent of a good barley wine, and this brew is just that. Very English barley wine in flavor. Thick mouth coating chewy sweet toffee, milk chocolate, and hints of peanut butter parfait, alcohol is hidden and leaves just a nice bite on the mid palate. Still some nice bitterness from a lovely floral hop agent. Hints of honey, marjoram, herb, lemon, fig, cane sugar, and maple. I really like the way this has transpired and would willingly drink again.

Appearance: Pours a very cloudy, copper body with a thin, bubbly white head.

Smell: Orange blossom honey, lemon zest, light toffee, and a good bit of alcohol fumes.

Taste: Sugary sweet honey and caramel maltiness upfront followed by plenty of strong citrus and pine notes leading into an intense, sharp finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Mild carbonation. Sticky mouthfeel.

Drinkability: Three years later, this double IPA has managed to age fairly well, with the hops still retaining much of their former potency.

22 oz. bottle (bottled in 2004) poured into snifter.

A - Hazy, orangey, copper color with very little head, but what is there leaves lacing all over the glass.

S - A little hoppy, a little sweet, a little musty, and quite a bit of wet paper type smell. Although an off-aroma, it becomes very pleasant when mixed with the sweet fruitiness and the pungent hops.

T - Sweet syrupy like a fine barleywine, but a nice punch of grapefruit hops to keep it tasting a little like the double ipa it once was. This has aged beautifully, there's pepper, pine, citrus, earthiness, and a little bit of subdued fruitiness.

M - Creamy and tingly. This has become velvety smooth during it's three years in the bottle. Fantastic.

D - So drinkable for a 9% beer that has aged for 3 years. An absolutely wonderful example of how some double ipas can benefit with a little bit of age on them.

Appearance: Rather hazy copper in color, with a moderate white head, no carbonation noted, and thick, glass-coating lace.

Aroma: Profound citrus and pine tar hop aroma, with a sweet, honey-like malt note.

Taste: Opens with a strong, citrus hop note, with underlying sweet malt. The hop flavors soon turn to pine tar. The finish is sharply bitter, with the pine tar notes subsuming the sweet malts. The alcohol presence of 9.0% ABV is artfully concealed.

Mouth feel: Smooth, soft, quite full, very pleasant.

Drinkability/notes: A well-made example of a style which is difficult to craft well.

Thanks to kbub6f.
This is the last in a trade we made.

I cracked this bad boy open for myself in celebration of my daughters first birthday... What a good choice.

Eleven pours a golden copper color with a big, fat, thick, sticky, clumpy, head that left lacing all the way down. The head stayed a good lumpy two fingers for the whole ride.
You can tell right away that this is going to be a hoppy hoppy beer by the smell. There is a little bit of citrussy pine in the aroma as well. I finaly see what it means to have your nose tingle from the aroma.
Wow, I could only imagine how this might of been when it was fresh. That's not to say this beer didn't age well. Spicy hops are the backbone for this treat. Some malt presence shows a little as the beer warms, but it is still hoppy strong. A little alcohol as well as a slight orange flavor show through the piney hops.
Medium boddied and well carbonated. The creamy head on top of the beer makes for a creamy full presence in the mouth.
The alcohol is up there at 9.0%, but I think I can still handle a couple of these bad boys. Drinkable? Yes! especially if your ready for a magicaly hoppy ride.

Eleven, one of the best Avery beers ever, pours out a deep autumnal sunset orange with a huge eggshell colored head that is dense and lasting. Lacing is spectacular and clingy.

Aroma reaches me before my goblet does with it's tale of golden malts, scorched sugars, juicey grapefruit and orange, spicey pinapple, and oozing pine sap. Very full, rich aroma.

Flavor exceeds the expectations set by the nose. A big, chewy caramel and honey malt presence backs up a massive rush of juicey hop flavors, mainly tangerine, candied grapefruit peels, fresh mango, crushed pine needles, and light floral notes. Well balanced with no trace of the 9% abv. A damn near perfect IIPA.

Body is big, sticky, and chewy, with a creamy smooth mouthfeel and soft carbonation. The hops slap you around while your licking your lips for more. Awesome!

Served in 20 oz. weizen glass.

Appearence: The color is a dark copper tone, with slight cloudiness and pours a creamy two finger head. Leaves a nice lace clinging to my glass.

Aroma: Hops and more hops, with a definite malt presence.Pine sap and candied orange peel.Oh my,my!

Taste: On the first splash that hits my palate, a hop bomb explosion is felt throughout.Even after a year, spicy, sappy, bitter hops dominates this agressive beer.Although hops are very present, there is a nice alcohol and malt balance to go with the punch of orange peel and bitter pine sap.

Mouthfeel: The feel is a wonderful medium to full body.Extremely smooth.

Drinkability: Although huge and flavorsome the 9% abv limits this beer to one or two bottles per session.Definitly a beer to seek out.
Avery was right on the money with this one.

This is one of the best IPA's that I've ever had. Pours a color somewhere between a rust color and an orange color with a slight haze to it (looks like tiny little pine cones). Great carbonation and head retention. A big robust aroma of malt and sweet, ripe, and mildly tart fruits. A heavy dose of hops bring out strong citrus, herbal, and floral aromas. The flavors are dead on the aromas, just amplified greatly. A big firm and sweet body displays raspberries, mangos, papayas, nectarines, plumbs, and grapes along with a big bread flavor over a bitter, resinous hop character. Hops display pine-ey, grass-ey, spicy, tea-like flavors. Very strong, but not to offend. Chewy body that leaves a sweet, bitter coating that lingers indefinately. Should be a good beer to lay down for a year.

In the glass, Avery 11 is a chilled, hazy peachy sort, no, more of a nutty apricot, how's that? And it's bedecked on top with a sturdy 1/2" scrumptious bubbles. Nice looking ale, very inviting.

Great big fruity bitterness greets the nose. Citrus zest, with tropical tones, as well, pineapple, mango, guava, a very comforting and lively hop aroma, all at once...another reason to urge my lips to meet the glass.

Juicy fruit and bitterness are king once the drink joins the palate, buy it's not too much, at least not to this hophead. Bitter grapefruit mixes with sweet mangos....full bodied, full flavored, but extraordinarily drinkable.
Yow! This is my kind of IPA, wonderful flavors, not too bitter, just enough...the bitterness lingers in the mouth just long enough before fading a touch.
I like it, I like it a lot!

much thanks go to oracle for the trade! I'm very glad to have the chance to get this one in me! Yum!

Now Quaffing: Avery "11" Double IPA

Deep, hazy, golden goodness in a glass! I can almost picture myself flying in a plane above the rugged troposphere that is the head atop this beer. Smell is all about the hops, very citrusy and floral (can something SMELL juicy?). This is an aggresively hopped beer. Well over a year old now and the hops are not only present, but dominate the taste of the beer. Fairly light in body for such a big beer, drinkability is good. The mouthfeel was amazing thanks to the silky, rocky head which remained throughout the entire glass. Finish is bitter and acidic (think apples). Happy 11th Avery!
