Our Honey Rye Ale is made with pale, wheat, and rye malts. It also has a blend of four different caramel malts. We used 20% rye malt to give the beer a very good rye flavor and aroma. The extra rye also gives a fuller mouthfeel to the beer. We added a generous amount of wildflower honey as well. This gives the beer a sweet aroma and flavor. We used Willamette hops, but the beer is not very bitter and has very little hop aroma. This allows the flavors of the rye and honey to come through. The result is a full bodied, sweet, and malty beer.

Nice medium rust color with a creamy eggshell colored head. Slight rye spice on the nose with slight note of honey and malt sweetness. Very mild notes of grassy hops. More honey and malt sweetness, with a subtle rue zing...could use more. Very light hop finish. Nice and creamy, medium body, lightly carbonated.
One of the better non-stout/Porter select they've done.

Had this on tap at Alto Cinco, and was served in a pint glass.
Hazy brownish-amber color with half a fingers worth of head.
Aroma is on the sweeter side. Apart from the sweet honey like notes there was nothing much to write about the aroma.
Taste similar to the aroma is on the sweeter side. The honey is more dominant than the rye for sure. It wasn't until the last few sips in the glass that I was able to pick up faint rye notes in the finish. Decent lacing along the insides of the glass.
The only thing that I feel was good about this beer was the drink-ability.; does not feel like a 7% beer by any means. Very easy to drink.
Overall, I would perhaps call this a honey ale than a rye ale. Personally I like my rye ale's to be more rye-forward. Not regretting giving it a try, but don't think I would be trying it again.

Poured into a pint glass.

A: Off-white, dense head. Body is a tannish orange color with a vibrant red hue. Hazy, cloudy body with an abundance of carbonation bubbles rising to the top. Extreme lacey film coats the glass after each sip,

S: Juicy, acidic aroma, smells like apple juice which is complimented by a rich, yet soft, sweet honey aroma.

T: Starts off with the smooth, soft honey tones then a rye taste jumps out of the glass. Honey coats the mouth after each sip, it a real enjoyable presence, not bitter at all, just sweet.

M: Mix of light carbonation and honey give a slight bitterness that balances out the chewyness of rye. Medium body overall, starts off light, gets really heavy in flavor and turns to fizzy bubble sensation of the end.

O: Extremely impressed. My last Abita Select was Triple Haze:( which is one of the few brews I didn't care too finish. The rye presence accentuates the honey taste, makes it more chewy. Very smooth and enjoyable.

Review from notes at Peg's Cantina on 9/10/11.

Draft poured into a pint glass.

Appearance: Poured a medium amber color with orange highlights and a 1 finger creamy light tan head. Nice lacing.

Smell: Sweet malt with a touch of sweet apricot.

Taste: Apricot and sweet malt up front followed by a touch of spicy rye before a light bitter finish. Aftertaste is fairly bitter. The flavor reminds me of a much better version of Magic Hat #9.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied with a decent amount of carbonation.

Drinkability: Good drinkability. Goes down easy.

Overall: Very good beer overall. I like what Abita did with this one. Definitely worth trying.

16 ounce pint - $5.75 at Taco Mac in Roswell, Georgia.

Appearance: Darkened copper-toned body with a very, very thin white head from a very, very generous, to-the-top pour.

Smell: Lowly sweetish aroma with notes of caramel and cooked honey over the malted rye and stale, dry biscuits over the even fainter hints of Chinese Duck Sauce and dried, bitter herbs.

Taste: Sticky albeit not sticky-sweet caramel over toasted biscuits, plus some noticed honey flavor. The portion of rye provides a nice background spiciness. Slight fruitiness of sourish apricots. Light herbal hop undertone, low bitterness, allowing the rye to do its thing. Dry, lightly peppery finish with that biscuit quality still holding on tight.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.

Overall: A fairly good beer with good showings of honey and rye.
