English Brown Ale |  5.60% ABV

Notes:
Turbodog is a dark brown ale brewed with Willamette hops and a combination of pale, crystal and chocolate malts. This combination gives Turbodog its rich body and color and a sweet chocolate toffee-like flavor. Turbodog began as a specialty ale but has gained a huge loyal following and has become one of our flagship brews.

Bought in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina to support the NO economy. I had no idea this was so widely distributed.

Best if consumed before... 1/8? What year? Or is 8 the year? Hrm. Sweet lookin' bottle.

Pours with a large tan foamy head with big bubbles that compacts as it subsides. A dark mahogany color, pretty clear, with beautiful ruby accents peeking out around the edges.

Smells nice, mostly of nutty malts. Sweetly scented. A faint whiff of hops, but mostly the bready, custard-like malts.

Very simple taste. More bready sweetness from the malts, which dominate the profile. Meager grassy hop finish. A touch of coffee and chocolate (props to Abita for nailing the "Toffee" they claim on the label, not many brews have this particular sweetness:coffee ratio). Toffee it is.

Boy most beers have reasonable mouthfeels but this one is subpar. Carbonation fails to hide the watery feel of this beer. It starts off okay with bubbles and then dies on the tongue. Not awful, but not good.

I don't think this beer is anything special, but it's a simple success. The watery aspect makes you able to slam it back, although it comes a long way to get to Ithaca and costs a bit as a result. Pretty decent, I'd cheerfully drink it again.

Appearance: Dark chestnut; medium frothy tan head, long lasting, good lacing

Aroma: Malty; roasted grains; very slight hop notes

Taste: Roasted grains up front; slight hop bites in the middle with a slightly dry, metallic flavor in the end; not particularly noteworthy, but not too bad overall

Remarks: Did not score A, T, S, M at that time; disregard those scores

Pours a chocolate brown with two fingers of head that dissipated quickly. Toffee notes are present in the nose. The upfront flavor is bready and malty with a mildy bitter finish. This offering is enjoyable, but only above average as English Browns go.

A: A unique dark reddish brown color, odd for a beer but not visually unappealing.

S: Caramel and toffee are present on the nose, minimal is any hop floral notes.

T: Complex sweet flavors up front transition but surprisingly smooth on the finish. There is a slight lingering dark fruit flavor of prunes which is difficult to place.

M: Turbodog finishes clean, not watery but could have a thicker mouth feel to match the flavors of the beer.

O: A unique hybrid between an amber and brown ale, having disticnt flavor characteristics from both. Clearly a popular beer which fills a nice niche and is available nation wide, a solid offering from Abita.
