Notes:
Abbey Ale honors the ancient tradition of monks who perfected the art of brewing beer to support the monastery and their "liquid bread". We offer up our support and thank them with a 25¢ donation to St. Joseph's Abbey with every bottle sold of this heavenly brew. Dark amber in color, the aroma of caramel, fruits and cloves invites you to contemplate the creamy head of this "Dubbel" or double ale. Abita Abbey Ale is a malty brew, top-fermented and bottle aged to rapturous perfection.

Abita Abbey Ale appears a almost opaque amber with a light beige yet thick head. The head's retention is good, and it clings well to the glass.

The smell is typical of Belgians with hints of spice and fruit notes similar to baked apple and candied apples.

Its taste is a little hot, but that is to be expected with an 8% monster. It is very complexed. The taste starts with piney-like and bitter notes. The mid palate has the baked and candied apples notes similar to the smell. It ends very sweet.

The mouthfeel is thick, and is very lightly carbonated.

Its drinkability is okay. One is all that is needed anyways, but the after taste does not make you craving another.

Overall, I think it is an impressive beer especially since it is coming from Abita, who is known for very "sessionable" beers. I like seeing breweries trying things off their normal path. It is definitely worth a try, and you might just need a buddy to finish it with you.

Bottle poured into a snifter

A - Nice fluffy head with impressive lacing. Dark golden hue.

S - Distinct presence of banana, plum esters.

T - Ripened banana tempered by caramel. Does an excellent job of masking its 8% ABV. Slight but pleasant peppery aftertaste.

M - Great balance between slick and mildly chewy.

O - Not a big fan of Abita but this is an excellent and very accessible representation of a Belgian dubbel.
