From the Wakefield Westgate Railway Station (which is on the main Leeds-London East Coast MainLine), come out of the station, turn right, walk down Westgate to St. Michaels Church and behind it (at the left hand side fork in the road) is The Redoubt. Well worth the 10 minute walk from the Station.
Awards are many; Wakefield CAMRAs Pub of the Season (several including 1995, 1999 and 2000), a Tetley Heritage Pub, and also on CAMRAs National Inventory of Heritage Pubs for its rare and unspoilt interior. This is a classic, albeit small, white-washed Basic Boozer, thankfully one of only a handful in the UK to survive a spate of demolition refurbishments in the 80s and 90s. The interior remains almost unchanged, comprises four smallish rooms including; a Snug, Tap Room and 2 other rooms with higher grade furnishings towards the rear. Many sporting pictures attest the high sporting links this Pub retains with the local area. It even fields its own football & cricket teams. The Summer often sees its Beer Garden at the back, full to the brim. Overspill onto the street in the front of the Pub (which is not tolerated by the Police nearer the Town Centre, but accepted here) is often common on busy Friday & Saturday Nights.
Its small size, and often packed interior at weekends, can give a clique feeling to outsiders when busy, but please do not misunderstand this for rudeness, this is definitely not the case, it is only a sign of the high popularity with locals. Visitors are definitely most welcome, visit when it is quiet and you will be treated with outstanding friendliness. Beer quality is absolutely excellent and, for its size, the beer range of 3 Real Ales is unparalleled. You have to try the Timothy Taylors Landlord (some of the best I have ever had, and I have drunk this beer in many places). The Tetley Bitter and Mild (which is rare!) are also always on fine form. No Food, due mainly to its small size, but as such the Landlord (the Man, not the Beer!) will allow food to be brought in. But you can have Food nearby. People come here to Drink and Socialize. Indeed, it is not a rare event for many of the locals to sink much more than a Gallon in a night, and remain extremely well behaved.
A true Drinkers Pub, a very rare example of a Classic English Boozer with a truly unspoilt interior, and 3 great quaffable Real Ales.
If you are ever in the area, its well worth the slight detour.
