American Double / Imperial Stout
Not just for breakfast anymore! Our Mornigwood Breakfast Stout combines sweet, rich, dark flavors of coffee, chocolate and cream with oatmeal. This dark beer has a tart “pop” at the end that makes it finish clean and make you crave another sip. Drink any and every time at 45 degrees with or without sediment.

A: Pours a little light, which also shows how cloudy it is, but as a farmhouse stout, I'm okay with that. In the glass it has a beautiful rich brown head with a creamy top and larger bubbles underneath. The beer still has a light brown in the glass though.
S: Roasted grains, almost a crisp toast. Distant hints of coffee, but maybe that's just me wanting it to be there. Some parts come off more yeasty than bready. There is a strange undertone reminiscent of paint thinner.... This needs a more robust roasted grain flavor.
T: Hmm, the farmhouse very much comes out here. I get a syrupy sweetness covered by a slight funk. It's thin. Perhaps breakfast porter would be a better tittle? There's a very certain tartness here that isn't being utilized enough. This is more like an over cooked cherry tart than a breakfast stout. It isn't offensive, just maybe not the best branding....But I knew it was a farmhouse style, so I'm going to still go with a 4. The quality is there for sure.
M: As I said, thin. Too thin. I really don't agree with the Breakfast Stout name, and here is a place it shines through the most. Sorry kids, low points.
Again, I'm going to give some points because I knew what I was getting in to. But I would be very careful about recommending this brand, and think maybe the beer could use some rebranding. Apparently, I got an older bottle so there may be some rebranding that has been done.

Pours a dark tawny brown into a tulip glass. A head develops and soon fades after a few minutes. The surface is glassy still, no lacing, only a thin ring around the edges. In the light the edges are a dark mahogany color, and it's fairly opaque. Sort of ho-hum.
Aroma of coffee and roast malt at first, dipping into vinous berry and leather notes, getting a bit strange.
Sharply tart and acidic flavors upfront that are hard to get past, a telltale sign of infection (intentional apparently, according to the brewer's website). Lingering tangy aftertaste of Brett yeast and old coffee. Ugh. Every sip nearly makes me want to spit it out. Thin bodied and moderately tart, the tanginess just makes me wince before it starts to turn the stomach after a few sips. Once that subsides you can taste some coffee in there, but it's far too jarring and messy to be taken seriously. I've had infected homebrew that tastes like this, actually better than this. Let's just call a spade a spade here.

"Crave" isn't really the right word here, more like "dry heave". An intentionally infected sour coffee stout isn't appealing at all. Frankly it's a ripoff at $12.99, and not worth buying at any price. Please CIB, set up a separate system if you're going to brew beers like this, don't pass off infected beer as "farmhouse" and upcharge for it. I'd give other CIB beers a shot if they were marketed as wild ales, but will steer clear of anything else.
Disclaimer: I'm pretty open-minded with experimental beers. I love coffee, coffee stouts, and all manner of sour ales, but when the combo goes horribly wrong, the public should get a heads up.

Poured from 750ml wax dipped bottle into Globe glass.
A. Poured about 2 fingers of tan colored head. Good retention. Moderate lacing.
S. Chocolate, coffee, molasses, some dark fruit. Roasted and chocolate malt aromas. Decent smelling stout.
T. Pretty smooth on the first drink. Get bitter coffee, some sweet milk chocolate but mostly dark chocolate. Quite a bit of bitterness from the coffee, hops, and roasted malt. Smoothes out pretty nicely as it warms. Bitterness fades into a more well rounded stout.
M. Medium/full bodied. Medium carbonation. Drinks pretty dry, and has some lingering bitterness.
O. Pretty good amount of coffee bitterness. Coffee flavored stouts arent my favorite, but this is a pretty good beer. No alcohol heat. Drinks smooth. Not an amazing beer, but pretty solid. I don't think the value is quite right for the price paid versus the beer I got, but its great to see another Iowa Brewery.
