kind of a weird pale ale. pours a golden yellow color mostly clear with an average white head on top. smells quite hoppy, definitely a big american pale. flavor is sharp hops up front followed by a mellowing pale malt roundness. nothing too distinct here, except that it feels much stronger than the typical pale ale. no abv was offered at the pub, but i would have to imagine this one being up over 7% somewhere. feel is fine, bubbly and crisp, with a lighter medium body. one knock against this one is that it got pretty gross as it warmed, losing all its carbonation, and taking on an unpleasant flavor. drink this one while its ice cold!

On tap at Vine Street Pub (& soon to be brewery) over lunch. Served in a pint glass.

A - A slightly hazy golden body with a 1/2 finger white head, decent retention and lacing throughout.

S - Earthy hop character, mild sweet malts, hints of spice.

T - Mild to medium bitterness with earthy, piney hop flavors. Mild sweetness with hints of the alcohol. Fairly straightforward.

M - Lighter end of medium bodied with adequate carbonation.

O - Solid brew, nothing spectacular. Still good. I'd order again

First had: on tap at their brewpub

Poured a slightly hazed golden brown with a moderate white head that receded to a ringlet. Aroma of sweet malts, and perhaps a bit more hops than you'd expect. Taste was similar--I thought it a bit over-hopped for the style, but I don't really have a problem with that. Resinous, citrusy, but maybe a tad astringent. Finished dry but with a bland aftertaste. Medium mouthfeel, and mostly drinkable overall.

On tapat the Boulder location. one-eighth retentive head. Very lacey, though aromas are hop and cheese. Light yellow body. More biiterness than a pilsner, perhaps thought of as an IPA in years gone by. Overall, an OK beer and pale though not outstanding.

On tap at Vine St. Nice yellow-orange color. The smell was like ale and quite nondescript. I don;t think I caught a whiff of a single hop. The flavor was also pretty unassuming, a little bitter, not much malt but also not what I would describe as hoppy by any means. Overall not a bad beer but I'd rather have an FYIPA instead.

Amber gold color with some cloudiness, nice two finger tannish head, piney hops notes with some yeastiness. Taste is similar with the piney hops a little more pronounced. Feel is somewhat chewy, with good carbonation. Good drinkable pale ale, very sessionable.

A - Medium golden body with signs of robust carbonation; white, craggy head

S - Spicy, deep and earthy hop flavors; alcohol tickles the nostrils

T - Bitter hop dankness; heavy-handed kick of bitterness and alcohol dominate the flavor; spicy, earthy, dank, pine, slight citrus hop profile; bitterness lingers; big jolt of spice and bitterness and alcohol on the finish

M - Sinewy and chewy enough for an IPA; prickly spice of hops and alcohol heat; lingering cloy of hop bitterness

D - A good, small-brewery shot at an "extra pale ale" that leans more towards a slow experience rather than supreme drinkability; bitterness plus alcohol in the mouth mildly detracts from drinkability

On tap at Vine Street Pub in Denver.

A: Cloudy pale amber. The small eggshell head has nice retention and leaves a heavy lace.

S: Lots of citrus in the nose, plus a bit of caramel and toasted bread.

T: The toasted malts start out with a caramel sweetness. The bitterness is strong and really took me back at first. It hits with a citrus and pine bite that's also a touch metallic. Finishes with a healthy bitterness.

M: The medium body is oily and slick. The carbonation feels about right.

D: A nice beer overall. Perhaps a bit too bitter for my personal tastes, but still quite good.

Enjoyed on tap at the Southern Sun location, just south of Boulder. Another quality hoppy pale from Mountain sun. Seems they like to brew beers in this approx. style, as they had several options to choose, similar to this one. Anyway it poured cloudy darker amber, loose darker tan head that left plenty of webs and sheets of lace and the pint was lovingly consumed. Fresh, hoppy and tasty, went great with my veggie/cheese sanny and bites of my daughter's burger selection. Quality evident from the first sip! Highly recommended

Another ace offering from Mountain Sun. These guys understand what their beers are supposed to be about.

Pours a sunny, hazy yellow with a nice head and great lacing. There is not much aroma, which is too bad, but it has a gentle grainy taste with elegant slightly floral hops on finish. The lovely thin mouthfeel clings just enough to emphasize the gentle hop bitterness on the finish.

I think the xxx stands for extra hops because this pale ale has some bite. A hybrid between an APA and an IPA. It poured a cloudy golden color with a tanish head. The nose has big fruity hops but not much malts. Like the nose the malt flavor jsut does not stand up to the bitter hops. A very hoppy pale ale.

First beer I spotted on the chalkboard (must be the xxx in me).
Pours a hazy golden copper-ish color. Nice one finger head, medium staying power.
Smell has a good balance of hops, sweet malt, citrus and grass.
Taste is really good. Served a bit too cold perhaps. Nonetheless the citrus and grass mix well and the malt keeps them honest. Lemon and tangerine seem to dominate.
Feels refreshing. For a snowy day, this is a great beer. I really like it.

Golden color and a bit cloudy. Smallish white head, tightly bubbled and with tenacious retention.

A solventy pine/grapefuit aroma - west coast hops and something else?

A grapefruit hop flavor dominates, but a nice malt/hop balance. A bit of caramel sweetness hidden beneath the hop. Finishes gently with lingering hop flavor and bitterness.

Medium body and carbonation, no astringecy. Quite smooth on the tongue, with possibly some *very* minimal alcohol warming.

A nice, hoppy APA. There was an element to the hop flavor that I didn't like, but overall a well-crafted, to style APA.

The beer pours a hazy gold color with a thin white head that fades to lacing. The aroma is great. It has a nice pale and carapils malt scent that is semi-sweet. It has an awesome citrus hop aroma that is generated by using three different hops. These dudes decided to kick this up a notch and it paid of. The taste is very good. It has a good malt base, but the glory comes with the tremendous hop character. It's HUGE. Citrus hops dominate from the moment it enters your mouth, straight on through the finish. The mouthfeel is good. It is a medium bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a good brew for hopheads. That's just what it is.

On tap at Mountain Sun. Poured a cloudy orange color with a large frothy head. Left a ton of lacing on the side of the glass as it drained. Aroma and taste are almost pure hops, but there is a decent amount of malt to back it up. Very drinkable - usually I'm not big on the nitro beers but this is a decent example.

There is something to be said for breweries whose grasp doesn't always correlate to reach. Rogue in my mind epitomizes this. Some breweries should try a million beers and keep a few. Some breweries should pick a few styles and whittle them down. I feel like Mountain Sun should just do a few styles, and do them well. This XXX pale ale seemed like a toss-off.

It was obliterated by No2, any malt flavor came across with whipped-cream plastic notes, and the hops in my opinion eventually puttered through like musty Saaz. The mouthfeel, so easy to attain in a nitro beer, was pretty much non-existent. The strongly alcoholic current running through the breweries beer was not found here either.
