A cool place for beer, wine, cheese, etc.

A good beer selection crammed into a small-ish area. Classified by suggested, seasonal, and geographic location. I focused on beer local to Massachusetts but decent selection of German and Belgian beer. Oddly, an extensive offering of EvilTwin. Has both warm shelves and coolers, four packs, six packs, and singles.

Was approached immediately by staff to assist, declined but there are two or three easily accessible employees to reach out to.

After making an initial selection, I asked for more recommendations for local beer and was not steered wrong.

Prices are a bit high, but the staff is rad, and the selection for weird stuff can't be beat.

My favorite store (of any type) in Northampton, and probably my favorite place to buy beer in MA. Provisions excels in spot-on customer service, and a clean, sophisticated, yet laid back and comfortable atmosphere. Somehow, Provisions manages to make a relatively tiny beer corner a wonderland of exploration. They have an ever-changing selection, and clearly have some influence/connections, because they will get cases of limited-run beers that 99% of stores in MA were not able to get. Their food is also incredible, and I've been able to purchase fantastic wines at very reasonable prices. Their events are also a blast- I recommend getting on their mailing list if you live in the area.

I now live on the Southcoast MA, but make a stop at Provisions every time I'm back in the Valley.

As retail stores go, Provisions is without doubt a cut above. Well lit and organized, and you feel welcome when you walk in. The quality and selection go hand in hand here. With the exception of the wine area, I would say that even though their assortment of food and beer choices is not what one would call "large," the majority of items that they do have are excellent selections in their respective categories. I only separate the assortment of wines here because the choices in that department so greatly outweigh the others.

The staff at Provisions have never been anything but courteous and helpful in my experience, and it's quite normal that someone greets you when you walk in the door. I like the personal touch that they can offer by keeping a record of the purchases you've made. Did you forget the name of that goat's milk cheese that you enjoyed so much? No problem, they can help you with that. "Hey, if you liked the [insert item here], we just received some really good [item] that you'd probably like."

The tasting events that Provisions hosts are nice. I get regular notifications in my email about what's going on for the next couple of weeks. One of these events in particular turned my world around. I've never been much of a champagne (or "sparkling wine") lover, but the tasting I went to at Provisions just before Christmas has changed that, no doubt.

The value really varies between "reasonable" and "a bit pricey" because let's face it, that depends on what you buy.

A fairly smallish upscale wine/beer/gourmet food store near the heart of popular downtown Northampton. Classy, from the pea green-painted stucco exterior to the wine bottle cutout window covers to the special tasting counter.

Wine racks make up over half the total floorspace. The beer is in a cramped aisle along the far left side of the store, including about twenty feet of coolers facing tall racks of bombers and a few better singles. The coolers contain some bombers and sixpacks, the shelving is about half Belgian-etc. and half U.S. There is also a rack on the end with various specialty sixpacks, and a small island in the middle on which are periodic $6.99 specials. Additionally, a twelvepack rack-and-stack area by the front window can include some unusual offerings.

Checkout is usually quick and easy, since the large oval checkout counter is directly on the way out and there is always at least one clerk there. The clerks are quite knowledgeable, courteous and helpful, although you may get hustled to join their volume purchase club, which is something like buy twelve or more bottles in a month's time and get one free.

This is a favorite store to visit every two weeks or so, because although their beer stock is not as large as one or two other local stores, the focus is sharply on quality craft.

Wow, what a great shop! I was down in W Mass vising a friend in Northampton this past weekend and we stopped in here while wandering the town Fri night. Superb selection of top shelf brews. I recognized a ton of really good stuff that I've had before, saw a TON of stuff I wanted to try. We didn't have much time so I restrained myself to only two brews. Prices were reasonable. They also have a great selection of cheese and other things that foodies will geek out over. Definitely the place to stop for some high quality brews. I was also really impressed by their lack of filler... hardly any boring/ routine brews... it was mostly ALL top shelf stuff. A very selective inventory, they've definitely tailored it for a beer geek audience. Definitely going back next time I'm in the area. Highly recommended.
