We walked here from the Adam's Mark. I have to say that downtown Winston-Salem was DEAD on a Saturday late afternoon. You probably won't have any problems finding this place or finding a parking spot.
The store itself seems to cover both wine and beer pretty equally. Most of the beer is in a cooler but they do have a small section at room temp as well. There is also a small selection of glassware. The best part is they allow you to get mix-n-match 6ers of just about anything they have in 6 packs for $11. I found a nice selection of NC beers (Highland, OBX etc) as well as some other micros, and even a '98 Anchor OSA. They do what they can with such limited space.
The staff was all very helpful, and even made recommendations on a good place to watch the OSU game.
All in all, aside from Old Salem and maybe a jazz bar or two, this place is a must-stop for a beer lover visiting the city.

This is the place if you are looking for something rare and unusual in the area, Serioulsy a fantastic selection here but as others have mentioned you are going to pay for it. They had things I never have seen in the area before which was really nice to see I have to be honest, but I found they were charging at least 3 dollars over what I thought it should cost and that made me really question the whole concept. But you know what if you want something special and rare you are gonna have to pay for it and that is really all there is too it. Still a really great place to go look around for sure.

I stopped in after a beer release at Foothills, and wow! This is a what a beer store should be. First off, the service is top notch. There were guys floating around the store to help anyone having trouble deciding, and with their help I was able to quickly hone in on what I was after.
The beer selection is superb, maybe 500 or more beers laid out by geography. A very good selection of Belgian beers, German beers, and USA craft beers. Also a generous breadth of UK brews.
There was a tasting table offering 5-6 different beers, but as I didn't try any I'm not sure on the costs for trying them. What I DO know is that you don't want to buy singles from a 6-pack. I was charged DOUBLE the prorated 6-pack price for a Duck-Rabbit Marzen. But aside from this larceny the overall buying experience was a positive one.

Stopped by CB this morning as I was trying to waste time before a dentist appoinment. Yikes! An older gentleman was working the counter. I just wanted to browse so I didnt ask for any help but he seemed eager to put away his NY Times and help if need be. I have since been back and Spencer has always been very helpful and informed me of new beers and new soon to be arrivals.
They had a great selection of beers. Probably the largest in the area. The prices were a bit steep, but the selection kind of made up for it. I bought a four pack of DFH Midas Touch for $11.50, a sixer of Brooklyn Barleywine for $11, and a few other singles. The selection seemed fresh. I did notice one lager from Lithuania that seemed a bit old. I bought one anyway because I have never had anything from that country. We shall see how it tastes.
The location is easy to get to from Business 40 but from I40 it is a nightmare. Even with Google maps it took me a while to find it. Too many one way streets and name changes and circular streets. Definitely worth checking out.

What a difference a few years makes. The place is packed with beers, you have to be careful walking around not to knock something off. If more than a few folks were in there it would be difficult to turn around. Good glassware selection and was asked if assistance was needed a few times, reminded of their tastings and asked if I wanted to be on the email list. Much better experience than ever before...prices could be a smidge less however...

City Beverage has a nice cooler layout with the beers all displayed side by side or across from the cooler. On the end are homebrewing supplies, but when I looked at the dates on some of the packaging, I might look elsewhere for that unless I was in a pinch. In the past they have many beers that can be difficult to find elsewhere in NC, but the last few times I stopped by the selection seems to be a bit less than it used to be.
I rated the service as good since I cannot recall ever being asked if I needed assistance and so all I use the cashier for ringing up the sale.

I've wanted to visit City Beverage for some time and finally made it there while passing through Winston Salem.
The atmosphere is very much beer driven. They have some wine but beer is the priority. It's not a large place but it's packed with great beer from all over the world including a great selection of Belgians. Some is refrigerated but most is displayed on nice wooden shelves that meander through the store. They also have several taps in the back.
City Beverage is a little on the pricy side. I'm not sure it would be my regular but if you want something special or need something in particular, they're likely to have it.

A very nicely put together store with wine, glassware and a small home-brew area on one side and bottled beer, a small lounge area and a 3 tap ber on the other. Very well laid out beer selection of every major beer making area in the world. Not much for wanting...maybe a label here or there they might not have but they surely have a worthy substitute.
Spencer, the owner, greeted us very pleasantly and was talkative but let us shop in peace. We had some conversation at the check out and maybe due to the amount of money I spent or maybe for the fact that we were beer travelers he threw in 2 free pint glasses. Nice.
A totally reasonable place. If I lived in the WS area I am sure I would be a regular patron. Very nice store...and hey it is but mere blocks from Foothills Brewing...an added bonus for sure!

I would have rated the selection higher but North Carolina laws don't allow them to have a First Class beer selection due to 6.0% ADV limits. However, one of the best selections of beer in the Piedmont Triad, if not the state. (They have a good selection of wine, port, and mead as well)
They also have the only home brew supplies in Winston Salem and 20+ mile radius. Good selection of quality products and if they don't have it they can get it for you.
Owned by a father-son team, Spencer (son) is incredibly helpful and knowledgable. He is a homebrewer as well so has good knowledge and knows most, if not all, of the homebrew clubs in the area. They have regular beer and wine tastings, not to mention an semi-annual tent sale where they asked there distributor for close-outs and special volume deals and move large amount of beer and wine and very discounted prices for the weekend. Great Place. Limited only by NC alcohol laws!
[Edit] Value: This is my one and only problem City Beverage (other than it's not within walking distance of my house but nothing is). They are consistantly 10-30% higher than other regional stores. I don't know if it because they have the best micro/import selection in town, or because their the only homebrew shop in a 30+ mile radius, or both, but they are more expensive. Not outrageously pricey enough to warrent a 30 mile drive, but enough to be annoying.

The thought that I shopped at any other paltry beer stop in town is unfathomable. This place is incredible! I was in utter shock walking around the store. They carry so many brews I've only read about on this site. They carry an insane amount of bombers and 750s. They section off the brews according to region they were brewed in. They have the largest Trappist section I've seen in town by far, as well as a vast amount of Belgians and Scandinavian beers. This is also the only place in town where I've seen Nøgne Ø with a respectable selection. They carry many of the premium and "rarer" DFH bombers, as well as Stone, Rogue, Bell's, Victory, Weyerbacher, etc. The staff was very helpful as I was in search of some Baltic Porters at the time. He showed me more BPs than I was planning on getting. He answered my questions and was more than helpful. He also invited me to the beer-tastings that they have every Sat. afternoon. Heck yeah, I'll be there! I would recommend this place to anybody who appreciates good beer...

One of the four best beer stores in the state and certainly the best in the triad. Since they added the beer room in the back 4 or 5 years ago, the selection has exploded and they now carry at least if not more beer than wine. They also have a tasting area in the back with a small bar and 3 taps (Bells, Stoudt, and one other on tap yesterday). Nice slection of glassware as well.
They have two clearance sales, one in the spring and one in the fall, where it seems that they get a LOT of beer in from there distributors and sell cases at quite a discount. Yesterday was clearance day and they probably had 25 different cases at 19.99 a case - several winter's and Victory Fest stood out. They were also pouring New Belgium beers in the side lot next to the store.
The only downside is their price. They are quite expensive.
