Poured from growler into pint glass.

Appearance - A pale straw color with a billowing white head that dissipated quickly.

Smell - Not a whole lot of aroma, maybe a bit of malt and a little bit of caramel, but not much

Taste - the taste matches the smell quite well. Not much about it. At the front a little bit of sweet caramel malt. Beyond that not a whole lot of detectable flavors present.

Mouthfeel - For the lightness of the beer I felt it had a relatively nice body in terms of turbidity. The level of carbonation was just right.

Overall - The beer could use a bit more robustness. Not the best of the brewpubs brews. It would however possibly be a good brew on a hot day after doing some good work outside. Its lightness would be fitting there.

A pint at Otto's new facility (the old Quaker Steak building). Beautifully re-done, by the way.

A: The pale lager is just that, a pale fizzy yellow color. Clear, accentuating the beads of carbonation, there is no room for error. A half a finger of white head came with the pour and was quick to dissapate.

S: The nose is non-descript. I kept looking for more than the light grains but couldn't find anything. The light body doesn't give much up.

T: As with the nose, this beer prefers the subtle route. Well-carbonated, light grains and ever-so-mild hops are fleeting. I hate to say 'boring' but this beer fits that mold (it does serve a purpose in a college town though).

M: The mouthfeel is inoffensive, bland with very little in the way of hops and malts.

O: A step above fizzy, this beer strikes me as an Otto's gateway beer.

I had this one on-tap at Zeno's.

A golden yellow body with a quickly disappearing white head.

Smells like a macro lager: weak malts and sweetness.

Tastes about the same. I don't really pick up a hop profile, and the malts are watered down.

Average mouthfeel, highly carbonated and light.

I have really liked all of the Otto's brews I have tried up until this one. It really reminds me of an American Macro, many of which I might actually prefer to this one.

Enjoyed at the brewpub on-tap. Apple juice with a minimum normal head. On the watery side. A little hop taste, like a bit watered down. Above average carbonation, It's somewhat astringent, not very drinkable. More, better malt needed. 4.8% abv Least of the lineup.

Originally reviewed May 29, 2007. On tap at the brewpub. Listed as "Spruce Creek Pilsener." Smells of faint lemon malt sugars, with a strong waft of Virginia Slims Menthol Light smoke (dammit). At least when I return in the fall, this won’t be a problem. Pours a clear middle yellow. Rim on white. Flavors a lightly estery reduced plain malt grain, with a little unfortunate skank and off-charater. A bit of corn and grain stink. Finishes risingly sweet and malty. Not much crisp hop balancing. A little lemon. Bad bitterness long off. Could use some improvement.
