Served on tap in a chalice glass

Appearance – The beer is served a deep brown color with a bit of mahogany shining through when held to the light. Upon serving there is also a very small white head that fades almost instantly, leaving almost no lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma is rather interesting. It has a mainly roasted malt aroma mixed with a bit of darker fruits. The sweetness is very light on the nose however and is dominated by the malt as well as a decently strong oaky and woodsy aroma mixed with some aromas of an alcohol booziness of whisky.

Taste – The taste starts out quite dry for a wee heavy and only gets drier as the taste moves on. Up front there is a roasted malt, biscuit and light caramel flavor. The roasted malt is by far the strongest upfront, largely dominating the taste. As the flavor advances a grainy spent roasted grain taste gets quite strong in the taste. This is joined by a decent showing of oak and some woodiness, which in the end, create a rather grainy and woodsy dry flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is on the slightly thinner side for a beer of 8.5 % of its style with a carbonation level that is on the slightly higher side. Not really too great for the style as the high carbonation doesn't really match the darker and woody flavors well with the carbonation level only lessening the overall feel.

Overall – Too dry for a wee heavy with too much of a spent roasted grainy taste and a rather non complementing mouthfeel. Not one I will go to again.

DATE: January 8, 2021... OCCASION: the week ends with a Christmas gift from Jer, an Otto's small batch revival of a style I really enjoy... GLASSWARE: Lindemans stem... pours a dark ruby mahogany body, lively with tiny upward streams building up into a finger of thick, ochre head that froths like a latte... strongly roasted malts, toffee, and caramel meet with apple, pear, berry, and some nuttiness... this rolls smoothly through the teeth and into the throat, weighty and warming but awfully welcoming... each sip is buttery and invigorating, chewy and bold... the malts are strong--caramel and toffee, roasted barley and hard fruits and Christmas punch... robust, impactful, and somewhat boozy, this accomplishes its goals of bolstering the spirit against the winter darkness and pleasing with its flavor profile... I see this is "Out of Production," but it is back and appreciably so... a nice bite, but overall soft and doughy, filling and staunch...

Deep mahogany with a very large, off-white, pillowy, luxurious head that sticks to the glass as it ever so slowly recedes. Smells of sweet, roasted malts, with brown sugar and caramel in the foreground. The background is home to subtle scents like earth, dark fruit and sweaty yeast. The taste is lightly fruity with a sting of alcohol. The caramel is big here, and the light raspberry flavor is a nice touch. It finishes warming and dry, yet with a lingering but not cloying sweetness. A little like a port wine in a way, if that makes any sense, but very drinkable. It has a medium-full body and tea-like texture. The high alcohol is hidden well. Quite the enjoyable beer. I haven’t been to Otto’s all that often as of late, but I’ll be stopping in more frequently while this one is on tap.
