Had at the brewpub. Served in a pint glass.

Appearance – A rusty orange color which formed a nice billowy head. The head slowly faded leaving a it of foam lacing on the cap of the beer throughout the drinking experience.

Smell - Some malty aromas with a little bit of dried fruit perhaps. The smallest aroma of citrus and pine as well.

Taste –A malty and grainy brew. Can pick up a faint hint of hops at the end of the drink, not much; appropriate for the style.

Mouthfeel – A good level of carbonation and a good heartiness in body for a lager. A pretty nice mouthfeel.

Overall – A good beer, not what I would have origanlly expected but a nice surprise.

This was from a growler I had filled during our last visit to the brewpub a few days ago.

Look: Poured a clear amberish copper color with a solid 2 fingers of off-white froth for the head. Appearance could remind you of a Sam Adams Boston Lager (not a bad thing). Carbonation was at a medium level.

Smell: Notes of a woody sweetness with pronounced hops and some nice spice came through. Again, I thought I had a Boston Lager here - but minus the sour notes I can sometimes get with Boston.

Taste: Mouth feel was surprisingly creamy with this one. Front of the palate was a nice earthy spice mixed with some sweet malts. A hop bitterness hit more towards the end with a finish of sweet bready cereal malts. The bitter hops seemed to last into the aftertaste.

This is a very solid Vienna Lager from Otto's. It was very impressive on how close they came to cloning Samuel Adams Boston Lager. Well done!

On tap at the brewpub - Dec 14, 2007. Aroma is a pale glow of lemony sugars and dusty grains. Pours a clear amber, with a thin rim of off-white. Flavor is a middle dense sugar, with edges of caramel, tanginess and palpable grain husk bitterness. Esters and astringency. I appreciate the malt body, but it gets cut by off bitterness, a curt dry note, and not really any balancing hops. Floorlike. Not digging this.

A pint glass at the new brewpub. A wonderful place, much roomier than the old location.

A: The Vienna lager is a caramel copper color, miles away from the Spruce Creek that came alongside it. Despite the rich amber tone, it remains translucent. A white head, nearly a half a finger, came with the glass but didn't last long.

S: The nose is sweet, plenty of grains that verge on fruits. The sweetness is rich, much more in-your-face than I was expecting, more syrupy than bready.

T: Malty rich, the lager is a mouthful. Sweet with toasted grains and a fruity sweetness. The beer is thick enough to be chewy without the alcohol heft to back it up. Hops are very mild, more balancing than anything else. The fruitiness of the malts, the thickness that they create, is the lasting memory of the beer.

M: The mouthfeel is a little sweet, had me worried about old beer at first. No fears though, the lager is quite good.

O: A good Vienna-style lager, chewy and thick.

On tap at Otto's

A - Arrived a dark copper color with about half an inch of white head. Laces nicely.

S - Bready and cereal malt aromas. Lots of fruity esters; banana and a little bubble gum.

T&M - Crisp and refreshing, medium bodied. Bready malts and a nice balancing herbal and citrus hops. Very clean flavors with a slight bitterness in the finish.

D - A nicely balanced, easy drinking offering.

16oz serving on draft presented in a nonic pint.

A - Ruddy chestnut amber color with a thin white lace of head that sticks around and coats the glass.

S - Toffee, bread, earthy and spicy hop aromas.

T - Biscuity, toasty malt with plenty of spicy, herbal hop flavor and moderate to high levels of bitterness for the style. The finish is slightly bitter and of reasonable length.

M - Tactile, well-carbonated, light body.

D - Light, flavorful, sessionable.

Pours a medium-dark brownish copper with a small, off-white, creamy head that diminishes to a tenacious film. Excellent sticky lacing. The smell is smooth, mild and malty with a touch of perfumey hops. The taste starts with a hefty wallop of malt flavors (bread, caramel, grain and cereal), then opens up to let other flavors through towards and on the finish, including some herbal hops and a light touch of citrus. It has a medium body, starts out sweet and finishes dry, and it has a soft carbonation. This is an pleasant beer that it took me a long time to get around to trying again, since I only get to stop in every once in a while anymore and usually gravitate toward the bigger, seasonal beers. This one is much meatier than their perennial Helles, but still easy drinking. Reminds me of something I would drink after a hard, sweaty day of spring skiing… not sure why.
