Served in a snifter at Firkin.
The first time I've ever seen Brash beers on tap, and I'm having a couple. Nice. This one pours a straight onyx topped by a finger of tan foam. The nose comprises sweet coffee, roasted malts, and a touch of toast. The taste brings in more of the same, with massive waves of coffee all through the proceedings and well into the finish. It borders on rather bitter in the finish, but never makes it all the way into negative territory. The body is a lithe medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a drying finish. Overall, a nice coffee porter. 'Nuff said.

Pours a very dark almost black kola hue with a chocolate laced one finger head and lacing everywhere, the smell is dark chocolate, brown sugar, raisins and milky coffee, the mouthfeel is full bodied with minimal carbonation and the tastes are dark bitter chocolate, chocolate coated sultanas, black Forrest cake and finished with a boozy port herbal bitterness, overall it's definitely a nice night cap with it's high ABV and yeah I'd buy this again perfectly matched with rich decadent desserts cheers.

Pours very dark brown to black with thin light tan head.
Smell is molasses, smoke, chocolate and coffee.
Taste is rich dark chocolate, coffee and hint of smokiness. Dark roasted malt and nice bitterness.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied with light carbonation.
Overall nice example of the style. Very enjoyable.

A - Pours deep dark brown with a tiny tan head.
S - Bitter coffee up front with a good amount of roasted malt character.
T - Dark Chocolate & coffee combine to make an outstanding opening. Turns a very subtle sweet and has a bitter roasted malt ending.
M - Velvety, creamy, medium carbonation.
O - Well done, well done. Thoroughly enjoyed this beer.

22oz bomber, bottled 11/28/12
I expected this to be a big beer and deviate stylistically from the other American Porters that I adore. The ol’ Exile pours a solid black and has no discernible bubbles creeping up from the bottom of my pint glass. The 1 in frothy espresso head dissipates quickly leaving delicate lacing down the glass as it settles. The smell of roasted caramel malt and chocolaty sweetness dominate the nose instead of the anticipated coffee. I actually quite enjoy the smooth nasal experience with a pang of alcohol and limited coffee, it pleasantly masks the dark roasted beans beneath.
Initially there is mellow sweet malt with light carbonation, not tingly or refreshing as with lighter porters, just satisfying (the oatmeal talking?) As you progress down the glass, this beer becomes cowboy coffee, a handful of ground beans left in a pot overnight. For you more refined folks it’s all espresso with one sugar. The intense coffee can get out of hand, but the Exile is astoundingly balanced with smooth caramel espresso bitter seamlessly integrated into the alcohol. This exile is surprisingly smooth on the palate and invites you to take your time. The “brewed too long coffee” acid with an alcohol pang finish out the beer, but the chocolate lingers. It is a short but drool inducing finish.
There is a rustic comfort about this beer that is undeniable. The Exile is an ale brewed with coffee, and nothing more. If you must call it a porter, his abv, and brash coffee will put hair on your chest as he flicks his cigarette in your face. This is damn fine beer that ya’ll should buy immediately.

A deep black with a bold flavor but a lighter consistency than expected. Dark beige foam and a spritzy mouthfeel. A whiff of cofee and cocoa.
Bitter coffee on the tongue. There is a touch of malty sweetness but mostly this is the dark roast. Burnt, charred, bitter, and a touch of sour. Warm nutty flavor rises up in the middle. Definitely not the unctuous RIS style. The hoppy, charcoal bitter chocolate flavor stays with you. Very dry, and quite sharp at the finish.
While the taste is better than a lot of coffee-flavored stouts, it's not very user friendly. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido.

Now this is one damn dark beer. Black colored ale with a tall brown head about the color chocolate.
Smells strongly of dark roasted malt. Scents of chocolate and coffee and alcohol. Little bit of pepper in the ethanol fumes.
Starts out slightly sweet and very smooth with a smoky after taste. Slight sourness with mostly coffee flavor. Little bit chocolate but mostly this is patent malt flavored.
Mouthfeel is full but not real thick.
Overall this is OK.

Reviewing this one since I appear to be very inconsistent with prior reviews and here offer my two cents.
Pours black with a medium to dark brown short lived head.
Nose is a pleasant sweet black chocolate; sweet roasted grain and hints of mocha coffee - pleasant and inviting.
Mouthfeel is "half and half" like with a nice carbonation.
Unfortunately, the flavor profile is a single dimensional assertive bitter charcoal. I get not even a hint of sweet or mocha or coffee or anything else pleasant. It just tastes like bitter ashtray that goes into a long bitter finish of dull pine. Far in the back finish there is a hint of coffee and black chocolate but you really have to wait for it and it's really faint. Bottle just hit a local store in Los Angeles around Feb. 20, 2013 - I'm wondering if the bottle is old, was stored poorly and if this is really the character of this beer. Salesperson says it's the latest and freshest. If so, not for me - JMO
