Midnight Ryder was the cask offering at Groveland Tap in St. Paul last night. It's always nice to try a cask, and Midnight Ryder is fabulous.
Appearance: About 2 fingers' width of tan foam, and the head stays around for awhile. Very dark brown in color, almost black. Lots of lacing.
Smell: Grapefruit hops up front along with beautiful roasted aromas in the background. A wonderful combination.
Taste: Very nice dark roasted flavors--some coffee, a bit of chocolate and cocoa. Also a citrus, floral hops taste with a dry finish. A gentle bitterness at the end. An exquisite taste experience.
Mouthfeel: Almost creamy, so nice.
Overall: A delicious beer. It's an amazingly drinkable beer considering the rich taste. Hats off to the brewer!

A: Black with a huge, frothy, steady, bread-loaf-looking head; pretty nice lacing; this beer looks fantastic

S: Piney, resinous hops mingle well with chocolate; slightly roasted malts; a touch of toffee and perhaps caramel

T: Pine and citrus hops up front followed by chalky chocolate with some slight roasted malt flavors; it finishes fairly balanced but dry and a bit of some coffee flavors

F: Medium body and fairly sticky; a touch thin on the back end

O: A nice beer from a new-to-me brewery; it doesn't quite come together but it works out pretty well

Chilled 12 oz. can into a 12 oz shaker. No visible canning date.

Look- Wow, this stuff is impressively dark for a relatively thin-bodied beer. Near black with orange-brown glints around the edges of the glass. Three fingers of frothy beige head leaves a sheet of lace on the glass. Settles slowly.

Smell- Unexpected once again. Assertively hoppy, fruity, resinous. Vague char undertones, but well buried. Sweet, tropical - lots of grapefruit, starfruit, mango. Brings to mind Nugget Nectar. More pine comes out as it warms.

Taste- Bracing. Unique twist of cocoa and grapefruit; somehow pulls it off. Acidic fruity character builds and then fades, leaving charred biscuit, milk chocolate, and resin. More and more nondescript grassy bitterness and pine as it warms and the glass empties, but not too shabby.

Mouthfeel- Medium body, full for the style, slick. Moderate carbonation. Mild astringency, almost metallic twang. So far the only failing of this brew, the rich, roasty finish suffers for the sharpness.

Overall- Pretty darn good. A sixer would last me a while, but it'd be a treat when I broke one out. More assertive than your typical black ale, and does it well. Definitely recommended.

12oz can, very fresh stuff

glugs out black like oil. pine tart, husky/musty bitter hop flowers with a slight metallic tinge. smells like an old cellar where you spilled some hop pellets once.

like licking below mike piazza's eyelid, in a good way.

thanks to hopazoid for this extra!

poured into tulip glass.

Appearance: black bodied beer with 2 fingers of tan head. Sticky lace and great staying power.

Smell: Concentrated pine needles. Citrusy hops mostly grapefruit rinds. A hint of malty sweetness. Little bit of char from the malts as well.

Taste: Big resinous piney hops with moderate bitterness that just ripps through everything and dominates this beers flavor profile. The pine transitions into a light char note, but the resinous pine never really goes away. Then a hint of semisweet chocolate and some roasty notes starting to build from the malt profile. The beer finishes with more pine hops and remains moderately bitter just as bitter as its started off. Would like a little bit more balance between the hops and malts.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer with moderate carbonation. Just a touch thin on the mouthfeel. I think this beer would really benefit from a think and creamy mouthfeel. Dry finish that builds the bitterness of the aftertaste.

Overall: This is a really really solid local beer. I still give the nod to New Glarus Blacktop because it has a better mouthfeel and is much more balanced than Midnight Ryder. I did enjoy the art on the can. It looks like Teddy Roosevelt riding a bear drinking coffee from a mug. Classic! Some minor teaks to this beer and it would be world class. Better than average example for this beer style. If you love resinous pine hops this is a must try beer, but I prefer balance and complexity for a beer in this beer style.

From a can.
Smell of malt and hops. Has that "warm" smell. Fairly sweet smell.
taste of roasted malt and piney hops. Some chocolate notes. A good bitter finish.

Overall- A great beer as I expected. I really like what I have had from indeed. Plenty of substance to go with the taste.
