After visiting quite a few stores in the Madison area, I found that Steve's Liquor had a wider selection of "local state" type beers. Oddly, it's pretty different from the selection at Steve's Wine's. They have a WHOLE WALL of coolers that house decent beers (all 6-packs), and a small section of that is devoted to bombers. I visited a few other stores, mostly supermarkets and specialty food stores, and I never saw as wide a selection. They didn't have any single 12 ouncers, but I bought a few bombers of beers from a brewpub in Ohio. The store was clean, well organized, and the staff seemed helpful based on the interactions I saw with other customers. Recommended.

I've been going to Steve's for the last few months for most of my beer needs (unless I'm doing a trade or home brewing). The service here is good, they don't pester you and let you pick out what you want.
When Sierra Nevada's Southern Hemisphere IPA was released I asked if they would be getting it. I asked an employee as I was checking out, and she said she'd call me back to let me know if she could get it or not. I never heard back. Not that it's a big deal, but when you take down someones name and number I'd expect some sort of feedback.
They have a nice selection of 12oz bottles, and a cooler dedicated to bomber bottles with some 750's as well. The price is reasonable with most items. You can get Ale Asylum cheaper at Woodman's I think, but Steve's is about average in price.

What a gem. At first, it may seem like this place does not have that great of a selection. The key is to find the secret passageway. There's a treasure room...
In the back of the wall where the reach-in coolers are, there are a couple of doors that don't lead to shelves of beer. No, they lead to another room. This room in back is where all of the gems are. Make your selections quick, because its only about 38 degrees in there. The beers are seperated by country, and you can find a really nice selection in there.
Although there is an impressive selection of imports, the selection of domestics could be better. Definitely worth the trip though.

This place gets by far the best publicity of a beer store on this site...honestly im not positive why
the service is pretty solid...these guys know beer. When i bring some off the wall stuff up to the counter, they compliment my tastes. The beer is well rotated and plentifull
but honestly, what does this place have i cant get downtown? The singles selection doesnt really rival Riley's or Woodman's...Theres a few belgians that you cant get anywhere else but everything else seems to be found downtown....I like going out there, but its really only a once in a month trip due to the location way out on the west side
prices are fair, but not really any different than anywhere else

Q- steves is my favorite place because it always has a great selection.
S- the service is awesome, Jan the beer barronness loves talking about beer and always brings up the spectacular flavors of this or that beer.
S- probably the best selection around. good all around
V- value.. so i always feel like steve's is a bit expensive, however its not that much more expensive, however i never really mind either though because it is a local place and they do a great job of keeping up on selection and i feel they deserve it.

A large group of us recently stopped in here for a bit of shopping before the Great Taste of the Midwest.
Quality- Good atmosphere here. Bright, clean, and well organized, despite there being numerous displays out on the floor. High quality selection and great service. All around excellent experience here.
Service- Service here was fantastic, courteous, and knowledgeable. Considering that I think our group literally bought half of their stock of WI beers off the floor, they literally fell over themselves here to help us out. There were several times that we needed them to check in the back for extra cases and such, and it was no problem whatsoever. My wife used one of their custom reusable bottle bags to bring some of beers up to the register, and they threw it in for free. Now that's the kind of service I'm looking for!
Selection- Tons of selections from all the Wisconsin breweries that I was looking for. New Glarus, Tyranena, Ale Asylum, Lake Louie, Central Waters, Furthermore, and Capital. I literally almost cried when I saw cases and cases of Belgian Red and Raspberry Tart out on the floor. Everything is kept in coolers and a lot of the selection was available as singles. Not all (there were some Tyranena and Central Water selections were only available in six-packs) were available as singles but there were definitely enough to mix & match a few quality sixers.
Totally worthwhile stop if you're in Madison. This completely met our WI beer purchasing expectations.

Well, there hasn't been a review of Steve's for almost a year now, so I'm happy to give it some fresh props.
Emily and I made our way out to Steve's in hopes for some off the wall stuff (actually, I was thinking they may have some Blushing Monk left, but no luck). They had a really nice selection of singles both in 12 oz. and larger format bottles. The cooler is stocked with all sorts of beer, with a great selection of all these fine Wisconsin beers that aren't available anywhere else.
I ended up scoring a couple bottles of Pannepot 2010, and some Lagunitas Sumpin Wild, which I was surprised to see still on the shelves, I thought this went quickly. A great lil store, well worth the effort to make it out from downtown.

My personal pick in Madison. Billed more as a wine store, the focus is equally on beer.
Kind staff is attentive and as well versed as any in the area. They know their stuff and love talking about it.
All the usual WI suspects can be found here. Most regional stuff too. Only place in Madison to carry Kzoo's/Bells entire line (both Steve's Locations).
You'll find me back in the cooler at the singles more often than not. Lots of goodies.
Make sure you don't leave without picking up at least one growler of Lake Louie, as Steve's is one of the few places its found.
Update, early 2004. This store was briefly surpassed by its University Ave counterpart. No longer. Recent months have seen a huge influx of new and exciting beers. This is the premier joint in Madison. Stop here.

Steve's Liquor keeps all of their beer in a cooler, rock on! The store seems heavy on wine but, fear not, there is lots of beer. They have a very good selection of beer everything from unique, outstanding imports to wonderful craft beers to regional beers to macro beers. The staff is helpful and friendly. The prices didnt seem too bad. Well worth a visit. I hope I make it back

Quality Almost everything was in coolers, including a big walk in with a good selection of singles and cases. Clean, well lit store, with ample parking.
Service Seemed like nice people, more than happy to chat for awhile and give me advice on where to find some Central Waters, which I never did actually find.
Selection Very nice, with New Glarus, Lake Louie, Tyranena and Capital all represented well. It also had a good smattering of other regional micros and some imports, which I ignored.
A good stop from almost everything Wisconsin, but not a huge selection of other stuff.
