When I was in town for two days I went here twice. Their micro cooler is about a mile long (at least 100 feet+/- a foot) and an incredible selection of singles and 22's. I was so excited that I didn't even notice the import cooler that was behind me. The macro crap was on the other side of the store so I didn't have to contend with that. This place is a must if you are in town. If I ever make it back to Madison I will be going here. I must admit that the $7.50 a six pack for mixed bottles is the best deal in town. I wish I had a place like this in Arkansas. I dream about this place.

Reasons to go to Woodman's west-side:
One of the best places to get a mixed 6-pack in town for a nice price. Nothing too fancy, but you can mix up some session beers to try them out.
Huge selection of craft/micros/locals/imports/cheap stuff/returnables, from sixers to cases, you name it.
Lots of cold beer, never too crowded, big aisle.
I don't have any knocks on the service, but my guess is if you needed help there might not be anyone available. Only downside is the lack of Lake Louie stuff and the bomber selection could be better sometimes.

After dinner down the road we stopped in Woodman's, open 24 hours, to stock up on local beers to take home. This place is like a Y'all-Mart only it is owner owned. The produce, cheese curd, and mustard isles are like none I have ever seen. When we got to the huge beer and liquor dept it was locked for the night. I felt like braking down in tears and I pressed my face against the cold metal bars.
The checkout guy said it closes at 9 and opens at 10 the next day, Wisconsin law. So the next day at 10:05 I was there and ready. They have a large wine selection but I weeded my way through to the beer in the back. They had a very good selection of singles but no New Glarus in singles, so I had to take a few 6 packs aswell. They have a ok sized import section but my cart was already full. They have about 10 different meads, which was nice to see so I pick up a bottle.
They don't take credit card but they do take debit card and my total was about 1/2 of what I was expecting to pay by Chicago standards. This is a must stop place every time I head into or close to Madison.

The greatest selection in the madison area and it has a giant single bottles section. If you can't find something here I would be suprised. They even have a single bottles imports selection. Very nice and probably the cheapest prices in town too. Everytime I go there it's never a problem if I am in there looking for what I want at any length of time no one bothers you and all they want when your done is to have your ID when you check out very cool place to pick up your brew. It also has a pretty big organic brew section.

I can never seem to make a quick stop to Woodman's liquor store, I always end up spending way more time than anticipated browsing all the selections. Don't expect to discuss the latest craft beer releases with any of the employees here, none seem to be very passionate about beer but they are usually friendly. The selection is fantastic though and the prices are the best in Madison. I also really appreciate their make-your-own-six-pack special that has encouraged me to try some beers I might not have otherwise.
Also, they offer case pricing on Oskar Blues -- great for camping trips.

This place is like a Costco for beer. It's a liquor store, essentially, connected to a big grocery store. This is the Woodman's on the west side by the Beltline. The Woodman's on Milwaukee Street on the east side by the capital area is almost as impressive.
I don't know if I have ever been so shocked upon entering a liquor store. The beer section is enormous. They have a shockingly diverse selection. They get stuff from all over the country. They have just about every major brewery in Wisconsin represented.
I spent $60 or so and didn't even make a dent.
I would be a major-league alcoholic if I lived in Madison.

The employees I have talked to at woodmans are not very helpful in selecting new beers, but if you have an iphone and patience to search through Beer Advocate to check out the interesting-looking beers, then you'll be just fine.
Woodmans has a very deep selection of quality beers and great prices. For example, you can get the large bottled Samuel Smith Imperial Stouts for $3 (while the $5 it costs at Rileys isnt much more expensive, and is still worth the cost, when you buy beer in bulk runs, the bill quickly adds up). I also like their large selection of single bottles that you can build your own sixer from. Their pick-6 selection is all very fresh (unlike other stores that just try to push their expiring beer), though surprisingly expensive ($11+tax) given the rest of the prices and the beer brands you can choose from (Sierra Nevada, Great Lakes, New Holland).
Overall, Woodmans has a lot a great beer selection attached to its grocery store and good prices to boot. It's hard to get good recommendations there, but an iphone solves that issue.

Ok, for what it is, Woodmans has BY FAR the best selection for a grocery store that i have ever seen...this makes every whole foods i have been to look like freaking amateurs
woodmans is a huge grocery store on the west side(havent been to the east side location) with a seperate liquor store...the beer selection is pretty mind boggling.
a grocery store loaded with belgians, rogues, avery bombers, great divide bombers, etc. they have all the locals you would expect to find anywhere else(except lake louie, i think?) and on top of that they have tons of local singles at great prices....They have all the Fish brewing company beers at the downtown stores, at better prices...batch 7000 6 packs...a bunch of seasonals I had not seen (okt/pumpkin)...just a ridiuclous amount of beer for a grocer
they are 0/3 on ringing up my mixed 6 packs correctly as well, all in my favor

Best Grocery Store for beer period. They have it all, but surprisingly their prices aren't always better then some of the little neighborhood shops so I go to them more often than Woodmans.
Huge selection and they seem to sell enough that their beers arent ever expired. They also tend to put beers that are about to expire, on ridiculously cheap specials.
With a few rare exceptions (real high end Belgians mainly) if its available in Madison, Woodmans has it and for a competitive price.
I also dig all the mega huge selections of Huber/Reinlander/PBR/Highlife/etc cases for super cheap.
At Woodmans, I feel like a kid in a candy store.
***The westside Woodman's has a better singles selection than the eastside.***
WARNING: You will not find Lake Louie or Central Waters Beers here!!!

big selection, lots of domestics, locals, and a decent cooler of imports. all prices are very competitive, the cheapest in town for most of the stuff they carry. also they have an awesome singles cooler. they have a flat price of $8.10 per mixed six, despite the fact that a decent number of the brews in the singles cooler cost more than $8.10 for a sixpack. if i were looking for only local stuff i would be inclined to go here first, but imports (as with every other joint in town) are hit or miss. since this place is so close to the beltline, it is required to hit up. plus just go on 12/14 west a lil past woodman's and you can hit up capital brewery in no time.
Notice: there is no Lake Louie to be found at Woodman's. you will have to go elsewhere in town to find it, I recommend Riley's.
