Pours an impressive bright yellow that should never be mistaken for BMC, it comes in lookin' like a heady brew. The aroma is exactly what a hop forward San Diego ipa should be, varied citrus and tropical fruit teamed with a green vegetal new proprietary hop essence.

Taste is even superior to the good dry hop aroma, when buckets of hops drink effortlessly, when its just in the zone so to speak. You're getting gobs of hop mouthfeel, but little to no alcohol, just barely enough malt and sweetness (crystal kept away or to a minimum here) to boost the hops even further into prominence. You're tasting more of the papaya, mango, lemon and tangerine than you were smelling. Maybe some chinook hop creating a very mild spicy/mint/bitter edge very late in the aftertaste.

These guys have really broken into the most market saturated place for this style beer, but they really are off to an amazing first year with a couple of these ipa's I've tried. Had on tap at Churchills Pub in November 2012.

On Tap

Churchill's Pub & Grille
San Marcos, CA

Cloudy light golden and yellow with a thin white head. Lined lacing left down the glass.

Straightforward, accessible, enjoyable aroma: citrus hop notes (grapefruit in particular), some pine, some caramel and bread, and a distinct grain presence.

The flavor is nice and is similar to the aroma: citrus notes, some pine and earth, a bit of sweetness, and a distinct character of grain.

Medium bodied, moderate carbonation.

Certainly good, but a letdown only because Societe's other IPAs have been such standouts.

A nice lower ABV IPA. Pale golden body capped by a tall lasting head. The nose is floral, spicy, very fresh. There's a touch of grapefruit and pine. Malt aroma is negligible. Smells very fresh and bright. Light on the palate with a spicy, floral, citrusy hop character. There's little malt flavor to speak of. The finish exhibits a clean, mellow biterness that makes this pretty easy to quaff. This didn't blow me away like The Pupil did, but it's very good.

Pretty typical IPA, golden pour with 1-2 fingers white head. Smell is similar to many SD brewery IPA's, Sculpin and Wipeout come to mind, but there is a peppery/earthy hoppiness mixed in with the citrus and fruit. Taste is very similar to the smell with the peach, meyer lemon and slightly pepper finish. Very easy to drink and I wish that the finish would last longer but this is very sessionable. Enjoyed for a brand new IPA.

On tap at Toronado SD, review from notes

A: Light and quite hazy with a thin yet pillowy head. A nice looking IPA.

S: Lots of fruity hops (ripe apricot, tangerine, peach - not a million miles from Sculpin). Some pepper and citrus too. No booze in the nose.

T: This is a nice West Coast/San Diego style IPA. Pine, citrus zest, peppery notes and ripe fruity hop flavors play well with drying bitterness and understated sweet malt flavor. This is the first I've had from Societe and I wasn't disappointed. It didn't totally blow me away, but it definitely held up alongside the other great IPAs I drank that night (Pliny, Hop 15, Duet, Pure Hoppiness) and that's saying something. Will try again.

On tap at O'Brien's

A: Pours a hazy light golden color with a thin off white head. Looks pretty good.

S: Tons of fruity and citrusy hop notes right off the bat. Tangerine, grapefruit and orange. A touch peppery in the back. Pretty nice.

T: A pretty good West Coast IPA. Juicy citrus hop notes throughout with a touch of caramel malt smoothing things out. This is by far my favorite of the three I've had from Societe so far (the others were The Harlot and The Apprentice). Really looking forward to trying more from these guys soon.

On Tap – Pizza Port Carlsbad
Stoked to find this on at the Port. Notes taken from Saturday – 07/14/12

A: A brimmed draught pour yields a very light and dull straw-gold ale. A tad fuzzy with cloudiness. Thin white rim cap that leaves some sticky ribbons of lace down the glass.

S: Smells of ripened orchard fruits with some hints of pine and light citrus zest. Getting lots of apricot and lesser notes of tropicals in the aroma. No real malt or alcohol noticeable. Nice fruity nose even under the cold served conditions.

T: Taste offers up more of the same with a flourish of fruity hops. Apricot paired with some grapefruit and tangerine. A touch tropical and exotic with some underlying pines. There’s maybe a subtle use of NZ hop varietals at play that keeps it somewhat interesting and a little difficult to decipher. Moderate bitterness makes for a rather smooth and enjoyable drink. Nice sugary cracker malt presence that doesn’t compete with the hops rather accents them nicely. No real alcohol flavors coming through. Not anything mind blowing but just a real nice light, balanced, and refreshing IPA.

M: Light feel that starts out a bit thin and creamy in texture and rides into a real dry puckering finish. Hops oils have a slight residual linger.

D: A fine and Dandy drinking IPA that offers up a nice fruity bouquet of hops. Doesn’t quite stand up to some of Ports house IPA’s but very drinkable none the less. Recommended.

These guys have my attention. Can’t wait to try some of their other offerings.
