Notes:
Welcome to the biggest beer Squatters Pub Brewery has ever made! A Russian Imperial Stout is one of the most intensely flavored beers a brewer can create. The combination of rich roasted barley, oak, molasses and licorice root combine to create an utterly unique and complex imperial stout experience.
We had to mash in twice to get our starting gravity of 27 plato (1.108 specific gravity). We boiled 3.5 hrs to enhance caramelization and used molasses and licorice root at the end of boil. Outer Darkness is aged with oak, has 65 IBUs and bottle conditioned. We hope you have as much fun drinking it as we did making it. Please share with another and drink wisely.

Deep brown black with light brown foam that settles to a thin skein leaving fits of lace. Smells of chocolate, raisins, prunes, faint coffee. Taste chocolate malt, vanilla, light alcohol, faint bourbon, a hint of anise and dark dried fruit. Mouthfeel is a bit creamy, medium heavy, decent carbonation. Works well. This is a decent effort and a tasty RIS.

10.5% ABV. Bottling date of 03/27/2012
Appearance: Pours a pitch Abyss-black with a creamy, dark chocolate head to match. Aggressive pour gives me about a 1.5 inch head.
Aroma: Roasted barley dominates the nose. It turns into sweet black liquorice with a hint of star anise. Delectable aromas of creamy chocolate abound.
Taste and Mouthfeel: Malty sweet start that ends with a dry, roasted coffee-like finish. Has a nice kick at the end that alerts you of its strong alcohol presence, but isn't overwhelming. Has somewhat of a creamy mouthfeel. Medium carbonation with a full body.
Overall: Love it. A practically perfect Russian Imperial Stout.

A: Thick and black with a huge frothy cocoa colored head and decent lacing
S: So much sweet chocolate and dark roasted malts; some dark fruits like raisins and prunes linger beneath; this smells so rich and delicious
T: Wow, that is rich and chocolatey and malty with some bitterness from the hops; a touch of coffee and dark fruits linger beneath; man, this tastes amazing--it has 2 years on it and it's drinking so well
F: Pretty creamy but just a tad thin for a big stout
O: This is an amazing stout that hides the alcohol so well; I honestly think this could hold up with the rare, brewery release brews in a blind tasting

This poured out as a deep black color with a brown colored head on top. The retention was pretty good on this and the lacing was nice and sticky. The smell of the beer is robust, big amounts of roasted and chocolate malt. The taste of the beer is complex, there is a bit of sweetness to it that reminds me of molasses, the roasted and chocolate malts give the beer some additional depth. There is a solid amount of bitterness in there also. The mouthfeel is thick there is a nice carbonation as well. Overall it's a good brew. I think it's a little underrated on here.

Presentation: 2011 vintage bottle with the old label chilled and poured into a Kate the Great tulip. Stored in my cellar for about a year and a half.
Appearance: Dark brown to black in color. I would say this is definitely darker and thicker than the average imperial stout. Definitely still some carbonation. Slight dark brown head falls quickly into a really light lacing.
Aroma: Molasses, overripe cherries, dark fruits and some bitter dark chocolate. There is definitely a touch of oxidation but it is barely noticable. Really nice combination of bitter and sweet flavors. Really nice complexity and balance.
Taste: The dark fruits and cherry notes really stand out and lend a really unique and tasty spin on this imperial stout. Molasses and caramel notes provide some really nice sweetness. That sweetness is more than offset by bitter dark chocolate. Very little alcohol burn, but with a nice warming sensation. Great for the cold weather. Really tasty.
Mouthfeel: Full bodied with low carbonation. Really nice for the style.
Overall, a really nice surprise. For a non barrel aged imperial stout, this showed incredible depth and a really unique and memorable character. All the flavors really played well of each other and the cherry tones really paired well with the heavy, roasted dark chocolate tones.

A: Poured pitch black in my Duvel tulip, the brew creates a mousse-like head that almost lumps on the top. Lacing is thick and even. It's a lovely presentation.
S: Chocolate truffles, drunken cherries, roasted malt, and a sharp tinge--probably from the licorice root--make a really nice scent here. I wish it were a bit stronger like other RISs I love, such as Old Rasputin and Sea Monster. Still, it's quite good here.
T: Oven-roasted hops are immediately present with a sharp medicinal kick; there's also a thick milkiness to it at the front. The malt comes in on the back of the palate with a slow burn that turns into something like a coffee porter. I'd like some more chocolate here.
M: It's not as thick and viscous as I'd like, but it's drinkable for sure. The carbonation on the front is pronounced, and it has a very thick, long finish.
O: It's not quite as solid as I had remembered, but this was a fantastic dessert beer. This would probably make a good introduction beer into the RIS genre.

At the airport bar, they poured me a tulip from the 750 (I don't think I've ever been anywhere that does this before!).
looks perfect - very dark brown with nice chestnut highlights and a thick creamy-coffee colored head that eventually fades but leaves beautiful lacing on the top 2/3 of the tulip. smells of licorice, molasses, brown bread, British hops, and yummy. taste doesn't quite live up to it - I agree with the reviewer who said there's a little cough syrup in the finish - but it's a very good RIS.
carbonation is maybe a little prickly, but the finish is dry and the flavors are rich. nice job, Squatters!
