T: the ABV is perfect, but it is rather simple for a double bock; caramel, toasted grains; a touch of honey and lemon in the aftertaste

A - Burgundy color with a one-finger, tan head of bubbly foam. It left thin rings of lace on the glass.

S - It smelled malty and slightly fruity.

T - Good malty flavor with a sweet caramel and toffee flavor. Some sweet fruits, too.

M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. Medium bodied lager.

O - This is a good dopplebock. My first Wasatch brew was a good choice.

12 oz bottle pours a clear crimson-copper color with a fine-bubbled tan head. Retention is pretty short-lived but the lacing is nice.

Nose is sweet caramel and light toast, maybe some toffee in here too. Smells pretty good, full flavored and lets the malts do their thing.

Taste has a candy-esque sweetness supplemented by slightly burnt caramel and toast. Alcohol is well hidden up front but flashes a slight sting on the finish. Mouthfeel is modest for a doppel and the carbonation is fine-bubbled. I don’t really like the near-burnt bready alcohol finish, it is a little acrid. It’s a passable doppel, but it might be awhile until I grab a sixer of this at the store.

Tasted 24 October 2012, reviewed from notes.

Pours a dark brown amber, some reddish hues. Not much head, and what there is fades fast. No lacing that I can see.

Smell is sugary, sugary, sugary. Brown sugar, molasses, any other kind you like. Not overpowering, but mostly one-dimensional. Some dark fruit, plums and figs. It's sweet, and could definitely do with some more complexity, but I like it.

Taste is also fairly sweet, but with less depth, less fruit. Drifts into a moderately bitter finish. Tastes fine, but it's shallow.

Medium-bodied, slick on the tongue. Medium-low carbonation. Works fine.

A solid, definitely above-average doppelbock. I like it; its main faults are that it doesn't measure up to the best in depth and complexity. But it's tasty.

Beer #40 in my great Utah Brew Hunt.

Doppelbocks. Bleh. I rarely find one that I like. That being said, I may not even know what a doppelbock is supposed to taste like anymore.

This brew is nice and malty with a slight sweet tone to it that is smooth. Really smooth. And I think that is what the definition of this beer is: smooth. I really don't have much to say beyond that really.

Ap- pours a dark copper color with a hint of brown. White minimal head goes fast and just clings to the sides of the glass

Ar- biscuity malt, caramel, toffee, overall it smells sweet

T- very malty and sweet with some plum and other dark fruit notes and some caramel.

M- bubbly with medium body, it's a bit sticky too. This beer has a really smooth finish

O- My first shot at a double bock and this was really enjoyable. Will be trying more in the future.

From notes; best by 5/23/11, consumed 4/20/11

A - Pours amber with one finger of tan head. Head has pretty good retention.

S - Smells like bread and dried fruits, mostly raisin and plums.

T - Similar to the smell. Also getting some flavors of tea and light caramel malt. Finish has a bit of bitterness to it.

M - Medium mouthfeel, actually a bit thin. Slightly sticky but pretty clean. Finishes somewhat dry.

O - Pretty good doppelback, but doesn't really stand out. Alcohol is not apparent. Just a bit too thin.

Wasatch The Devastator Double Bock has a very thin, almost nonexistent, off-white head and a clear, somewhat bubbly, honey color. There is a little lacing left behind. The aroma is subtle, but one can detect sweet, rich malt and candy or fruit. The flavor is of over-ripe fruit, pecan shells, rich barley malt, some chocolate, and syrupy sugar. It's a little bitter, but not particularly so. Mouthfeel is medium to thick, and The Devastator finishes smooth, sweet, and mellow. A little bit of the alcohol burn shows up on the back half. Overall, this is an excellent beer.

Appears a clear brown color in my pilsner glass. A large head forms and slowly settles to a thick cap. Nice amount of sticky lacing is left down the glass.

Rather timid aroma for an 8% ABV beer. Some bready malt and mild spice.

I can taste some caramel, bitter chocolate, and dark bread. Small alcohol presence and a little warmth in the finish.

Thin for the style and definately for a beer with this ABV. Carbonation is nice.

Unremarkable beer. Nothing wrong with that but I feel no need to visit this beer again.

Poured into a snifter.

3.0 A: Clear deep amber color. Just over a finger of beige frothy head. Retention is poor and only a few whisps of lacing are left.

3.5 S: Big toastiness. Moderate amounts of caramel, raisin, and plum. Brown sugar and nuttiness underneath.

3.5 T: Again lots of toastiness. Caramel, raisin, and nuttiness next. Plum and brown sugar to round thing off. Lightly boozy.

4.0 M: Medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Pleasant creaminess.

3.5 D: Tasty beer, but pretty standard doppelbock.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a footed bock.

A: Dark brown. Pours about a 1 finger, foamy, brown-white head. Settles fairly slowly leaving a thick blanket of foam. Substantial beer ring lacing.

S: White bread... not really much else.

T: Syrupy thick malt, with maple syrup, and unsweetened chocolate.

M: Thick and cloying, high alcohol character, with a slightly dry and pungent finish.

D: Sipping brew.

Atmosphere is pretty good. Dark hue, with a solid head and lots o' lacing. Nose is basic and not so exceptional. Flavor is thick, syrupy and full characterized by malt and a cloying sweetness. Overall, this is a pretty decent quaff.

The first beer I've had from Utah and I was very surprised they had something this strong. I was on vacation in the Black Hills and found this on the menu at Stonewalls in Rapid City. Nice.

It's a clear, tannish red with a small amount of foam. The aroma was plum and caramel. The taste was rasin, canelope, more on the earthy side. The taste and body seemed a tad thin for the style, sepecially for an 8% brew. After finishing the glass, I might debate it isn't really 8%, since I didn't really feel the alcohol. I would probably have this again. I mostly chose it because it was one of the few items on the menu I haven't tried yet.

Poured from a bottle into a nonic pint.

A – Clear reddish brown with a white, one-finger, sea foam looking head. Lacing is clumpy.

S – Strong aroma of sweet caramel malt. Undertones of molasses and toffee. Again, this smells really sweet.

T – Taste matches the nose. Plenty of sweetness from the caramel malt, but manages to not be cloying. Slightest hint of earthy hops in the finish. Not very complex, and kind of boring on the tongue after a while. Slightest hint of booze in the mid palate.

M – Pretty much perfect for the flavor profile; medium bodied, with lively carbonation. Thankfully no syrupy feel with all that sweetness, and it drinks like a beer.

O – Hard to really say much more about this one. A solid enough double bock, but nothing that would make me really remember this or rush out to buy it again.

Poured into a shaker pint.

Perfectly clear coppery red. One finger of dense, sticky foam is colored sandy tan and deposits stalactites of lace on the sides of the glass.

In the nose: mildly spicy hops, raisins, prunes, some dark bread. Pretty light and not too sweet.

The flavor’s a bit better. Bready malts start to emerge, along with rum-soaked raisins, fig and a touch of brown sugar. More bready than sweet, but balanced,

The medium-light body is a little too soft and watery for me. Light, massing carbonation and a good amount of fizz. A little booze in the nose.

Devastator is devastating – could use a little more flavor -- but it is drinkable for its strength and fairly tasty.

a boozed up malt bomb here. pours a bright clear copper color with a small just off white head. smells like german malts and a candy sweetness. the sugars are less intense in the taste, but the malts are diverse, earthy, thick, and lasting. hard to place this one exactly, similar to one of the troegs bock beers out there, maybe like a lesser version of the troegenator even. feel is fine, average carbonation and a bigger than medium body. really cool artwork on the bottle and well priced for an 8% brew. i wouldnt want more than one of these, but im glad i tried this.

12oz brown with a freshness date.

LOOK: Dark brassy amber, sufficient head

SMELL: Broth, treacle, chicory, dark bread, clean, spicy alcohol, yeast, nutty, mineral

TASTE: Creamy, full bodied, malt sweetness, cocoa powder, bread crust, herbal hop, nutty grain, grassy, clean semi-dry finish

Tasty even if it does not show off that much depth. Very clean and almost too easy to drink for an 8.0% brew. Well done.

12 oz single from "Lifesource" Salem. $1.99 Pours a clear light brown,small light tan head..goes fast leaves loads of lace. Aroma is a lot moe subdued than i expected what there is is of course caramel malts and raisins Smooth toasty,caramel,fudge maltiness in the taste, rather simple and no real depth, has alcohol present in the end. Pretty thin for the style on the palate. Overall not impressed..this seems to me like maybe a regular dark bock not a dopplebock

Lightly chilled 12 oz. bottle poured into a tulip pint. Bottling date 11.02.11.

Look- If I was rating the label, this one would be a solid 4.5. They've updated the label since the profile picture was taken, and it's now got a rather elaborate multicolor metallic copper and black label featuring one angry-looking goat and a flame motif. Very cool.

Anyways, on to the beer! This one pours the expected clear brown with a couple fingers of eggshell head that fell within a minute or so. The lacing is intricate, but sparse, and I can spot a few lazy bubbles winding their way to the surface. All in all, it's pretty average.

Smell- Fresh rye bread. That's about it. It's clean and actually pretty appealing, but extremely one-dimensional. Agitation brings out touches of yeast and alcohol. It's not bad by any means, but a hint of spice or something would add a lot to this one.

Taste- Tastes a lot like it smells, but sweeter. Toasted grains, light caramel malt, and something faintly nutty. Once again... rye bread. The alcohol is actually quite well hidden, but it's far too sweet for my liking and the sweet biscuity is only a few shades shy of sickening. Inoffensive to the point of being bland, in my opinion.

Mouthfeel- Light bodied with a modest touch of carbonation. Crisp-ish at first, with a fairly clean finish and mild warming feeling after the sip. Pretty middle-of-the-road.

Overall- It's a solid beer, but a bit pricey for what you get and not terribly interesting. I probably wouldn't pick it up again, though I may recommend it to a friend that's not generally into darker beer but wants to try one.

Poured into a pint glass. Very light brown, clear color. Few carbonation bubbles lead to a small, half finger head that is very light brown itself and thin. Lace appears to not want anything to do with this beer.

Smell is lightly roast malts and yeast. Sweet smelling, light coffee and chocolate smells and maybe just a hint of alcohol.

Taste is not like the smell so much. It drinks more like a Scotch Ale. Very sweet and medium roast malts. Honey and wheat. No alcohol can be detected from the taste.

Mouth is silky or creamy with round carbonation. Body is medium with an average wet finish.

Overall this wasn't bad but it didn't fit it's style IMO. I really think it tasted more like a Scotch/Scottish/Wee Heavy than a Doppelbock but not a bad choice if you get the chance. Thanks to Rim Liquor for this one.

Pours a orange/amber color with tan soapy foam. Aroma is very malty, with caramel and honey undertones. In the taste, some toffee, caramel, brown sugar, but not too sweet. Balanced with little hint of alcohol. Smooth, medium bodied feel. Overall, a tasty and deceivingly strong bock, too much could prove devastating.

A- Pours muddy brown, very murky. hardly any head at all. This is a really dank looking beer.
S- Dark malts, caramel, and even some dark fruits. Really sweet and sugary.
T- This reminds me of a quadrupel. Its very caramelized and has lots of raisin and brown sugar tastes. Extremely sugary sweet. It blends well and is very tasty.
M- This beer is very carbonated. Very creamy mouthfeel. Leaves my tongue somewhat sticky and dry.
O- This is a very interesting beer, not what I expected at all. Its more of a tripel or Quad then any other style of beer. This beer has a big feel to it and is definitely a sipper. A very enjoyable beer if your in the mood for something this crazy.

A. Dark amber with almost no head and no lace.

S. I'm struggling to find any aroma coming off this beer. I'm hardly getting anything apart from a faint whiff of caramel.

T. Given that there smell was so non-existent, the taste is surprisingly strong, but not exactly what I was expecting. Much more toffee and caramel than is usual, and some oxidised sherry-like notes which are quite pleasant to my palate, but shouldn't be in a doppelbock. A faint hint of bitterness in the finish.

M. Medium bodied and very little carbonation.

O. A pleasant enough beer to drink but not a great doppelbock. They've got the malt-forward aspect right but it's a bit on the sweet side, and there's definitely an old ale character to it.

Oddly watery mouthfeel and light body for the style. Burnt raisin toast flavors. Not much of the wheat flavors. More dark caramel and a slight bitterness in the finish. Seems to have that spoiled fruit flavor that makes me think of Old Ales rather than the Doppelbock.

Handsome dark amber in the glass. Fragrant with some dark fruit in the nose. The odd perfumey flavor with an earthy aftertaste is not one I care for at all.

12oz bottle poured into a chalice. Thanks to Phelps for this in the Tickers BIF for this.

A: Medium amber in color. Almost a one finger white head with ok retention and good lacing.

S: Lots of sweet caramel. Very nutty. Lots of dark fruits, figs, raisins, and cherries.

T: Very sweet. Caramel and toffee. Dark fruits. Big nutty notes along with a slight alcohol bite in the finish.

M: Medium light body. Medium high carbonation. Decent creaminess.

O: A decent beer. A bit to sweet in my opinion. It's slightly complex. Haven't had many Doppelbock's to compare to so take what I say with a grain of salt.
