Notes:
In the Bavarian tradition, this crisp, clean golden-hued pilsner is brewed with German variety Magnum hops, then lagered for 30 days for superb drinkability. Provo Girl is the type of pilsner you would find in the Munich area of Germany.

12oz brown bottle with a freshness date.
LOOK: Slight haze in the yellow golden color, sufficient lacing
SMELL: Herbal, spicy hop, apple skin, dough grain, semi-clean
TASTE: Smooth, crisp bite, clean hop bitterness, herbal, grassy, bready, yeast, dry grainy finish
A bit more hop flavor and perhaps cleaned up a bit would greatly help this pils out, a decent brew but reminded me of a Kellerbier more than a straight up pils.

Presentation: 12oz brown bottle, twist-off cap. No freshness date.
Appearance: Pale yellow in colour, with a touch of haze. Pours a finger thick white foam head.
Smell: Faint malt/grain aromas.
Taste: Dry, crisp and fizzy. Carbonation could be likened to seltzer water. Body is light, thin. No real malt presence or sweetness -- a bit of dextrin in the taste, but not much. Bready/biscuit flavours come forward as the beer warms. Hop bitterness is spicy, herbal. It peaks for a brief second with a slightly salty sting on the palate then settles. Finish is clean with dry and grainy notes here and there.
Notes: If you're looking for an easy drinking, no thinking, light-bodied, no frills beer ... here it is. Not much difference from a lot of the mainstream lagers/pils on the market (less alcohol being one difference). Most definitely drinkable though, and a nice alternative.

Beer #29 in my great Utah Brew Hunt.
This is an even pilsner. Doesn't seem to be much here to make it stand out. The body is heavier than I would expect for the style. Lots of malts and some grain influence as well. It's a decent beer, but lacks finesse and comes out as a strongly toned interpretation of the style.

Poured into a pils glass. Born on 4/18/12.
4.0 A: Clear dark yellow color. Two fingers of pillowy white head. Retention is very good and a moderate amount of lacing is left.
3.0 S: Light hay and grassy hoppiness. Fairly clean, but could be a bit moreso. Not bad, but not much going on.
3.5 T: More flavorful than the nose suggests. Hay and grassy hoppiness again. Lightly bready malts underneath. Fair neutral malt sweetness. Again, could be cleaner, but not bad.
3.5 M: Lighter medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Not as crisp as I'd like, but okay.
3.5 D: Decent, easy drinking pils.

Utah beer session, 2/6
Poured chilled in tulip water glass.
A: clear blonde; 1-finger head; good carb action; good lacing
S: light, pale, much like a mediocre central European pilsner
T: for this genre, not bad; buttery, savory; salty; not very sweet; grassy, suited to the light ABV
This is not my genre, but if it were, I'd grab it, esp. if mowing the lawn

Slight nose of flowery hops. This is so delicate I think you have to be in the right frame of mind to enjoy it. Golden color, foam on top. Prickly mouthfeel. Very thin. No hint of malt. Just a dirty edge to the aftertaste with some bitterness. Actually, it's quite metallic. I'd have to taste this against the Bohemian Pilsner in the four percent sweepstakes, but I don't think this would win.
New label has the Y girl in white parka and miniskirt, and somehow, white skis. Dang, should have thought save the variations for a vertical tasting of all the babes.

Poured a light yellow and crystal clear to boot. Amazingly clear, which is exactly how I want my pils to look. Some faint bubbles linger around at the top. I’m not picking up any aromas and it has me wondering if my olfactory senses have been ruined en flight to Salt Lake City? Or is it just the beer is lacking?
Nice carbonation gives this beer a pleasant mouthfeel at first but then I pick up an off finish. Rough, harsh, and bitter but not in a good/floral/hoppy sort of way. Unbalanced, but I can’t tell if it’s the hops or the malt profile that throws this beer off. Seems like the beer can’t tell either. I get some flavors that remind me of roasted malts, dark malts. Completely unexpected and definitely unwelcome for the style. There’s less of that hop spice and more roast in the flavor and it bothers me. I wouldn’t mind a crisp, hoppy pilsner, but not one that’s roasty. Pass.

poured from the bottle into a pilsner glass
A - Pours a transparent blonde with a two-finger, dense white head. Plenty of carbonation in multiple bubble sizes stream to the top. Head stays intact all the way down the glass, leaves plenty of sheets of lacing.
S - Sweet and malty with a bit of hop notes and a hint of lemon. The bottle says it uses magnum hops, which I don't believe is a variety of noble hops, which would explain why this beer doesn't have that floral zing that other German pilsners have.
T - Just some bready malt flavors upfront. The body is very malty with a hint of lemon. Hop flavors sort of linger in the background, but could stand to be much more pronounced and "zingy" to balance the beer and make it more interesting. Lemony, sweet finish with a bitter-lemon aftertaste.
M - Light bodied and substantially carbonated - exactly what I was looking for this hot afternoon. Suites the beer well.
I don't agree with the hops used in this beer. Saaz or any of the other noble hops would have made for a much more interesting nose and taste. Gorgeous beer with a gorgeous lady on the bottle, but past the eye candy, it's a merely better than average pilsner.

Whilst in SLC, had a chance to visit Squatter Pub & Brewery....or Salt Lake City Brewery. The Provo Gal was yellow in color and clear. The carbonation created a nice white head. There was not much of a scent, perhaps some grain but very faint. The taste was typical of most pilsners and was smooth. From a mouthfeel perspective it was very easy drinking. One of the better offerings in my opinion.

This bottled beer poured a straw color with a wisp of foam which retained itself. The aroma is dominated by the hops, a little spicy and bitter. The beer is agile across the palate. The flavor is subdued. Not much malt but OK hops at the end. The palate is left dry.
This is an OK, but not astounding beer.

Source/Serving: Draft
Smell: Cereal grains, musky earthy hops that are marginally authentic actually.
Taste: Stodgy, insipid grains and a heavy handed with the carbonation. The middle has some grassy bitterness and more cereal grains. Finish is a little bitter in a bad, astringent way. Overall pretty crisp but not much too it.

On tap at the Quarry in Vernal.
A: pale yellow in color with a stark white head, no retention just a few bubbles. Excellent lacing though. Nice clarity as well. Decent looking pils.
S:not much, not much at all, some grainy smells and a whiff of hops. Kinda falls flat here.
T: pilsner malt, quite watery, but a nice spicy lingering bitterness. Noble hop profile is there but just not huge. Still flavorful though. Good mild beer.
M: light and crisp, fairly dry as well which makes for a decent mouthfeel.
D: way nicer than the standard bud or budlight you can get on draft in Vernal. A little spendy for a pint at 6 bucks but still tasty. The definition of a gateway beer.

From a Utah Brewer's summer variety pack smuggled through Midway Airport.
Looks the part, with pale color, tall white head that settles down into lacing, with carbonation streaming constantly upward. Very slight smell, not unlike a macro, but with a better hop aroma.
Floral hops with grain and malt flavor. Good taste, grain aftertaste, and very refreshing. Only knock it for being a bit overcarbonated, but it could certainly hold up for a session. Wish the notes were more pronounced though.

Had at the brewpub in Salt Lake City. Beer was part of a sample tray. Served from the tap into 4 oz sample glasses.
A-gold body with a nice white head
S-metallic, like an aluminum pan
T-berry-like, light hop finish
M-light
D-I definately think there are better pils out there. I would have to pass on this next time.

a: clear, bright golden color with bubbles constantly rising from the bottom, rocky white head with great retention and light lacing
s: pulpy noble hops upfront supported on a body of crisp pilsner malts, simple and well structured
m: lively medium-high carbonation with a refreshingly light body
t: clean and crisp pilsner malts carry a grassy noble hop flavor with a nice spicy snap, pulpy even, the bitterness level is moderate, perfect progression of a mild, bready lager malt sweetness to a dry and cleanly bitter hop finish, just a great pils flavor
d: no problem, a great representation of the style - regardless of the constraints from the abv limitations in place
large glass at the brewpub nearly a year ago, review entered directly from notes

A - Slightly Cloud Pale Yellow with a slight haze and white head that disapeates quick
S - A Little malt, citrus and hops
T - About what you'd expect for a 4% pisner. Very good representation of style. Corn and bread/cracker like. A little bit of hops and malt. Hoppier then the lager.
M - Nice and thin, but moderate to high carbonation
D - I personally wouldn't drink these, but it's got a ton of "drinkability" thanks to the style and Utah's ABV laws.

A - Very clear gold. Head was lacking, but I did have this one at the airport, so maybe they don't know what they are doing with the pour.
S - Nothing offensive, but not a lot to suggest it either. Just not a lot there.
T - A bright noble hop bite with a little lemon-cake balance. Not quite enough on both counts, though.
F - As with many of these 4% Utah beers, I feel this is a bit overcarbonated.
D - Not bad...I'll drink it, but I have to be frank - the Provo Girl is a looker, but she's pretty dull.

Thanks goes out to Wasatch for the hookup on this and many other Utah beers. Cheers, sir!
A - Poured into a Trumer Pils glass. Wonderful light golden color with excellent clarity. The thin white head seems to be composed of a variety of bubble sizes and is holding up nicely. Lacing sticking to the glass as the head retreats.
S - Very prominent pilsner malt/grainy nose. Floral hop character also present at an appropriate intensity for the style.
T - Crisp and flavorful, this is one hell of a Pilsner for such a modest ABV. Bitterness is firm and at a moderate level. Lingers on after the swallow into a dry, clean finish. The pilsner malt character is readily apparent and well-matched with the floral hop flavor. Though the tastes in a pilsner can be somewhat simple, this is extraordinarily well-balanced and flavorful
M - A medium-light bodied with a moderately high level of carbonation. Not quite effervescent but the carbonation feels appropriate and in great balance.
D - At a modest 4% ABV but packing more balance and character than beers twice as strong, this is certainly a drinkable beer. Though my trade only included one, I'm wishing I had an entire 6 pack. Excellent job by the folks at Squatters!
