Beer #31 in my great Utah Brew Hunt.

Lots of grain on the profile of this one. Mild toasted tone to it as well. The toasty edge shows more on the nose than it does on the flavor. But it's still even enough to be a pleasurable drinker. In fact, I think I appreciate this one more than any of the other beers I tried tonight.

Poured into a pint glass.

3.0 A: Clear medium yellow color. Two fingers of short lived, white frothy head. A very short ring of lacing is left.

3.0 S: Clean and lightly grainy. Light neutral malt sweetness and grassy hops. Not bad, but needs more power.

3.5 T: Like the nose, this is tasty, but lacking strength. Still a good beer though. Grainy malts with a light neutral sweetness. Grassy hops. Easy drinking.

4.0 M: Light body. Clean, crisp, and refreshing. Light creaminess to boot. Good here.

3.5 D: I wouldn't mind having a few of these. Very clean with a good, although light, taste.

12oz bottle (bottled 7/29/2011 - thanks for bringing this one up Dad) poured into a weizen glass. Pours a pale, slightly greenish yellow with almost no head. Nice bright carbonation - which it turns out might be the only thing going for this one....

Aroma is grainy, ricey, a hint of corn. Something a bit sour or acidic in the nose.

Taste follows nose: grainy, watery, lemony, dry.

Crisp clean finish.

Reminds me a bit of a Kölsch. Definitely not one I'll be coming back to. And really not sure what to do with the other five from the six-pack. Might be a good one to reset my palate?

Edit: As I'm finishing the last of this six-pack (all of which I drank from the bottle except the one described in this review), I'd only add that the aroma was more fruity and less sour when consumed from the bottle. Overall this was still the epitome of the average beer - but it was better when I drank it from the bottle than from a glass.

One of the beers I sampled on our Utah summer vacation. 12 oz. bottle with no freshness date; sampled 8/19/09. 2004 World Beer Cup winner in the premium lager category - brewed with European hops and Munich malt. It pours a crystal-clear medium gold, with lots of carbonation and an inch of off-white head that leaves huge sheets of lacing. There is a cereal graininess in the nose with perhaps some adjuncts. Tastes of corn, a touch of pale malts and a slowly-increasing hop presence that contributes green, floral/minty notes and mild bitterness. The body is lightish, bordering on medium, with lots of carbonation and a drying finish. This is a great example of a retro lager that helps quell the hellish heat of the desert, and is proof that Utah can make good beer.

Appearance: Pours a clear, pale golden color with a robust head that leaves a few shards of lace

Smell: Grainy, with undertones of cracker malt

Taste: Bready, up front, with a growing lemony twang that is joined, mid-palate, by a slight honey sweetness; the finish is clean, with just a bit of sweetness on the tip of the tongue

Mouthfeel: Light bodied with crisp carbonation

Drinkability: Easy to drink and a bit more flavorful than the macros

Thanks, Douglas88, for the opportunity

From the Squatter's summer sampler, with a fun label (different from the Benjamin Franklin image currently depicted). It shows Wasatch's founder in colonial garb, protesting beer taxes by throwing 1st Amendment Lager into the Great Salt Lake.

I would never do that myself; this beer certainly worth drinking. A bit more flavor than the macro adjunct lagers. I find it most similar-tasting to PBR (in a good way). Grain, light malt, and sweet corn. Thin mouthfeel, it goes down refreshingly clean with a slight sweetness. More carbonation than I would like, but that's in the beer's style. Highly drinkable for this reason.

Like BuckeyeNation says, "If lagers from the Big 3 tasted like 1st Amendment Lager, then none of us would ever have anything to bitch about." That said, it's still a very simple beer for me. For the money, I might just opt for some cheap macro while picking up a sixer of one of Wasatch's more complex brews.

Makes a good souvenir gift though.

A - Slightly Cloud Pale Yellow with a slight haze and white head that disapeates quick

S - A Little malt, citrus and hops

T - About what you'd expect for a 4% Lager. Very good representation of style. Corn and bread/cracker like. A little bit of hops and malts, and citrus grapefruit. Kind of a stretch a little.

M - Nice and thin, but moderate to high carbonation, just like a lager should be. Crisp with a Clean finish.

D - I personally wouldn't drink these, but it's got a ton of "drinkability" thanks to the style and Utah's ABV laws.

Thanks to Wasatch for the hookup on this beer.

A - Poured this into my Old Rasputin nonic pint glass. Medium-dark yellow, clear. Formed a thin white head that lacks depth but is well-retained and leaves a nice lacing as it collapses.

S - Prominent grainy/corn aroma. Some hints of floral hops lingering in the background. Not overly complex but good for an american lager.

T - Grainy flavors coming through. The beer finishes dry and leaves a lingering cracker-like malt flavor. Bitterness is rather modest and hop flavor is subtle, floral in nature, and just enough to help keep things in balance.

M - Medium-light bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. Smooth.

D - This could make a good session beer but with a somewhat uninspiring flavor, I'd opt for something else instead. At a modest 4%, the beer certainly surprises with the amount of flavor packing much more than your typical American macro lager. Well-done but I'd likely opt for something else on pint 2.

Poured into an English pint glass at 40 degrees.

Appearance: It is a medium yellow color with a frothy white head that dissipated quickly. There is a lot of carbonation in the beer. The clarity of the beer is very clear.

Nose: A malty sweet corn, a low level of hops, and citrus.

Taste: A malt sweet corn with a mild hop tones.

Overall: This is a dry crisp malty beer with a high carbonation that give a subtle acidity to the beer. The mouth feel is carbonated and the finish is slightly bitter and it linger on the palate. For an American Adjunct Lager, this is one of the better beer but the balance is slightly off.

I exercised my 1st amendment right to try this beer and I'm glad I did....

A - mostly cloudy, nice color for a lager (not too pale) almost a honey color. head was eggshell and bubbly, faded to a patch and hung to the edges, slight lace

S - aromatic, malty, slight dash of bitterness and honey...inviting if you will

T - bready, malty, and even honey, once again just a smidgin of hops. nice full flavor for a lager

M - almost watery at first but finishes crisp, ....a very nice balance of flavor and sharpness, coated the mouth beautifully

D - very easy to drink, a good session beer, won't leave you bloated like your grandmother's anles or drunk like the redneck yelling at his ex-wife nextdoor (4% ABV).

For those who refuse to attempt darker beers or can't handle them, this is a great one to start with if your looking for something subsantially better than budlight

Appearance: pale yellow in color with a 1/4" head that falls to a spotty surface foam. Some spotty lace develops.

Smell: grass and light malt sweetness are detectable. More pleasant than others in the style.

Taste: light malt sweetness, grass, and a bit of earthy funk here. Some green grapes and light bitterness rounds it out.

Mouthfeel: crisp and slightly dry. Light in body. Relatively clean aftertaste.

Drinkability: a so-so lager here, but it does get a bit boring after a bottle or two. But it is better than a Bud or Coors.

12oz included as a very much appreciated extra in a recent trade with Wasatch... poured into my smaller hefe glass.

Short lasting 2" head atop a beautiful straw gold brew.. polished crystal clear with suprising amount of spotty lacing.

Aroma is all clean fresh pale malts.. slight hint of floral hops.. smell is actually very good.

Flavor is again very clean pale malts.. a little huskiness adds nicely to the palate... decent injection of noble hops helps.. bready.. very clean through and through.. sometimes less actually is more... drinkable and without a watered down character... really pretty good... If I had access to it, I would almost certainly pick it up in the summer quite a bit; I think it would be very nice after/during working in the yard.

I drink my fair share of PBR... and actually like it (booo hisss).. but this is like a PBR brewed by someone who actually cares about their beer and wants every bottle that leaves their care to have a good home... very drinkable and I love the nod to the founding fathers and their respect for beer and personal freedoms.. long live the 1st Amendment ... lager.

Thanks John... I've been wanting to try this one since I first heard about it 3-4 years ago.

Thanks to Wasatch for this one...

Pours bright yellow with a thin foamy head that stays around a bit before becoming a patch.

The smell is of soft grain and light hay. Clean.

The taste is of sweet honeyish grain and a hint of nuttiness. A balancing hop presence is there in a lemony way. It has a crisp, clean finish.

Appropriately light-bodied, this is very smooth.

Well-done for the style, this is a nice, tasty, smooth lager that is certainly sessionable and refreshing.

Thanks again - John!

This brew came in a Squatters sampler pack along with three other different brews. Poured from a 12oz bottle at refrigerator temperature. Drank from my snifter while watching San Diego vs. Denver.

Appearance- Pours a light macro yellow with excellent clarity and zero head. No cap or collar and definitely no lacing.
Smell- Everything is very subdued and light like you’d expect. Lightly fruity, sort of reminiscent of peaches and grapes. Grainy with hints of fresh doughy malt.
Taste- Starts slightly sweet with a raw grainy taste that slowly gets doughier as it warms. A very fresh and clean citrus bite that adds a bit of bitterness to offset the malt. Like most Macros, there’s not a lot going on here but its spot on for the style.
Mouthfeel- Very crisp and clean with tight, aggressive carbonation.
Drinkability- This is a very crisp and clean Lager that would most definitely hit the spot on a hot summer day. Sitting at 4% ABV this makes for a great session brew. This beer is the true meaning of an American Macro. No adjuncts or anything else that isn’t supposed to be in my beer. Solid brew.

Acquired via trade from Wasatch, so a big "Thank you" goes out to him. Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a light yellow color with a very thin white head that fades quickly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is kind of faint but contains pale malt, barley and a little bit of hops.

T: The taste is pretty refreshing as it starts out with a light malt character, which is quickly followed buy a mild hops presence. There is neither an overabundance of sweetness nor a nasty bite that you get from most beers of this style. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Smooth and very crisp, light body, medium carbonation, very clean finish.

D: Tasty, goes down very easily, not filling at all, I could definitely drink quite a few of these, this beer is an example for the big boys and is proof that not all macros are below-average.
