Served in a Hitachino Nest bowtie glass.

I thought I had this bad boy back in my NoVa days, but apparently I was wrong... This stuff pours a clear brass-amber topped by a stolid finger of light cream foam. The nose comprises toasted toffee, pine needles, and orange rind. Things are kinda muted thanks to the nitro tap, but some elements shine through anyway, stalwarts. The taste brings in more of the same, though now the pine character is more sap-y (not sappy) than needle-y. The body is a light medium, with a steady nitrogenation and a subsequently velvety feel. Overall, a solid hoppy red. Though nothing to get outright excited about, it's definitely something to try if you haven't yet done so.

A - Served a dark brownish-red with a silky light tab head that adults without fading. Times of lacing left on the glass.

S - Sweeter malts, but pretty subtle. Some piney hops and a touch of citrus.

T - Dank citrus, pine and wood flavors. A sweeter middle with a slightly bitter finish.

O - Dank, dark, and hoppy.

Arrives a nice coppery red with a creamy, off-white head atop. Great lace.
Smell is ... absent. Well, nearly. Faint, very faint hop note is all I can find.
Taste is malty, with gingerbread, spices (clove, allspice, pepper), molasses, faint hops, and an herbal/floral note. Balance is phenomenal!
I was not prepared for how great this is. For a 70 IBU brew, I expected more of an IPA style but the hops are well matched with the malts and the balance and complexity of this is off the chart. ABV is so well hidden that you gotta watch yourself. A slight, very slight warming at the back of the throat is all that hints at 8%+. Full bodied with an almost creamy texture, the effervescence just keeping it from being cloying. This is almost liquid velvet sliding through your mouth.

Having on draft at the Union Brewhouse.

Appearance: This beer poured a small head that reduced to a thin layer. It is a copper color with great clarity and bubbles coming up through the glass. Nice lacing on the glass as the beer was drank.

Smell: Caramel and bready malts with some citrus hops and grapefruit in there.

Taste: Same as above. Very tasty and balanced.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, balanced, drinkable, medium carbonation, and medium bodied.

Overall: Delicious beer that I will enjoy more of in the future.

A: Pours a semi-translucent red/orange. There is a half finger of slightly off-white head. The foam settles quickly, leaving spotty lacing on the glass and a thin ring along the edges of the beer.

S: The nose is sweet malt, caramel, strawberry fruit roll ups, and a touch of spice. I get the fruit roll-up flavor a lot in beers and I don't know how to describe it. It's not too boozy. Good balance in this beer.

T: The flavors in this beer seem to follow the nose pretty close. I get sweet malt, a good bit of spice, and a touch of that berry note. It's not huge berry, but I just can't explain how it tastes. It reminds me of a goji berry? I don't even know anymore. The finish is a mix of sweet, spice, and mild alcohol. Solid.

M: Medium bodied beer. The flavors are bold and envelop the palate wholly. It's solid. The alcohol is known at the end of the beer, but it doesn't dominate from the start.

O: Good beer. I'd drink this again in a heartbeat. I've probably overlooked this beer 1000 times in the past, so I'm glad I took the time to try it.

My first Oskar Blues beer (I have some Ten Fidy's downstairs for another day). Overall the pour was a nice fairly translucent red with a big head. Smell was mostly an alcohol aroma and initial taste was hit with a fairly large burst of alcohol. Tough to pick out any key flavors and left with a dry mouthfeel. I didn't love it but I didn't hate it. I'd probably buy it again

Had this beer with some sashimi last night and enjoyed it very much. Another fine offering from Oskar Blues.

Appearance: Poured a burgundy red color, very polished with lots of foamy sticky head.

Smell: light hop aroma with the smell of strong, bready malt and caramel. Notes of biscuit and honey malt as well.

Taste: very good. Again, a strong blend of malts with a good balance of hop flavor. Not over powering one way or the other. Floral hops mixed with some slightly spicy and citrusy hop bursts as well. Strong caramel malt backbone with sweet honey like flavors as well as bready.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied beer. Thick on the tongue yet not too thick to enjoy even on a summer day.

Overall: This is a great beer. Can't wait to have this again next time I see it.

Pours a really nice almost see thru medium dark amber color. Has a thick, mountainousy, foamy two finger head. Leaves a huge lace trail and has zero carbonation bubbles.

The inital aroma i got was of hops and a bit of citrus maybe grapefruit? Maybe even orange and I'm getting a sweet smell of caramel too.

It tastes sweet at first, then you get a citrusy, caramel flavor after. Has a definite hoppy taste to it too.

Heavy mouthfeel with a slight lingering bitterness in the finish.

Overall this is a really good beer! It was my first from the Oskar Blues Brewery and I look forward to try the others!

Beer is reddish-brown in colour with a small off-white head.

Smell contains sweet caramel, bready malt and a good dose of fruity, vaguely citrusy hops. Hard to pick out particular fruits- perhaps orange and tangerine, maybe a slight bit of pineapple.

Taste is rather malt focused, although the hops are certainly present. Bready, caramel malt flavours, as well as a bit of a herbal flavour, coming from the hops. A noticeable spicy flavour - not sure if there is any rye in here, but it feels that way a bit. Some fruit flavours, orange mainly. Aftertaste has some apple in the flavour, and some more of the herbal element.

Medium to full bodied, moderately carbonated. Bready.

Overall, pretty good but not particularly impressive. I like it but it is certainly not as good as I expected from the reviews.

Sadly this was bottled on 10-16-02 (a wee bit old)

A- A lightly hazed deep orange. A half finger of an off tan head.

S- A big caramel note in this beer. A malty dark fruit presence. A slight floral note and what remains of what was surely a lot of hoppiness.

T- A slight bitterness at first but an overall clean and crisp flavor. A big caramel presence and toffee at first. There is a lot of dark fruit in this beer and a nice grapefruit presence. A slight floral hoppiness but not at all like I assume it once was. A nice balance to this beer and remains very drinkable.

M- A sticky mouthfeel. It has become and big, thick, malty beer over time.

O- A solid beer, I assume this was quite hoppy. Not anymore, but the malt has come though and made this something quite nice.

16 ounce can poured into a snifter.

A: Pours a mostly clear amber color with a two finger head and excellent lacing.

S: Sweet malts up front along with some nice floral and citrus hops to balance it out. There are also some mild bready aromas in the end. Smells nice and inviting.

T: Very much like the smell, the first thing I taste are the sweet malts balanced nicely with the florall and citrus hops. Not too hoppy and not too understated...just right. The alcohol is completely hidden.

M: This is on the thicker side of medium bodied with just the right amount of carbonation. Ridiculously smooth!! Just about perfect.

O: This is a very enjoyable offering from Oskar Blues. Very tasty, well balanced, super smooth, and packs a decent punch. Nice job!!

I picked up a can of Oskar Blues G'Knight Imperial Red Ale last week for $3.39 at The Lager Mill. I'm still working my way through the Oskar Blues lineup and I randomly chose this one o try tonight, so lets see how it goes. Canned on 2/20/13. Poured from a 16oz can into an imperial pint glass.

A- The can looks pretty nice, I think the green and silver colors look good together, but I'm not too sure about the name. It poured a nice bright amber color that took on some red and ruby hues when held to the light with two fingers worth of off white head that died down to a thick ring that stayed till the end and it left lots of nice lacing behind. This is a pretty good looking beer, I have no complaints at all.

S- The aroma starts off with a higher amount of sweetness followed by lots of hops, it's a nice combination of floral, resiny, and citrus hops with the citrus seeming to stick out just a little more than the others and it imparts some grapefruit and pineapple like aromas. Up next comes the malts which are pretty sweet and impart a mild grainy and bread like aromas that seem to be a little overpowered by the hops. This beer had a nice aroma, but I wish the malts stuck out just a little more to bring better balance to the aroma, It's got more IPA than Red Ale aromas.

T- The taste seems to be pretty similar to the aroma and it starts off with a medium amount of sweetness followed by a good amount of hops that are the same mixture that I got in the aromas with the citrus hops still sticking the most and imparting some nice grapefruit like flavors. Up next comes the malts which seems to show up a little more then they did in the aroma and they impart some slight grainy and bready flavors with just a slight bit of caramel. On the finish there's a medium amount of bitterness that's slightly on the lighter side, and it has a floral and citrus hops aftertaste with some malts also showing up. This beer tasted good, it was much more balanced than the aroma led me to believe, i liked it.

M- Smooth, creamy, a little crisp, on the thicker side of being medium bodied, and it had a lower amount of medium carbonation that was just barely enough. I thought the mouthfeel was nice, but it could have used just a little more carbonation.

Overall I thought this was a good beer and a good example of a hoppy Red Ale, I got worried when I got to the aroma since it was very IPA like, but when I got to the taste there was enough Red Ale aspects to balance out the hops and it makes this beer truer to style. This beer had decent drinkability, it went down smooth, and the flavors held my attention, but they didn't really keep me coming back for more, so I think one pint can would enough for me, I don't think I would want two in a row. What I liked the most about this beer was the appearance and how balanced it was when it came to the taste, both of those aspects were pretty good. What I liked the least about this beer was the lower amount of carbonation, I think a little more carbonation would make for a pretty good mouthfeel. I don't know if I would buy this beer again, I for sure wouldn't rule it out if I was in the mood for a hoppy Red Ale, but I don't think I would seek it out. I recommend trying it if your a fan of hoppy Red Ales, it's good for what it is. All in All this was a pretty decent beer, I didn't love it, but I sure didn't hate, but I still think Lagunitas Imperial Red Ale is my favorite of the style. This was a pretty Solid beer from Oskar Blues, but I have yet to find one that I really like, maybe that beer is right around the corner, who knows, but for now I'm still on the fence about this brewery,

Canned 2/20/13 "Happy G’Birthday!"

Appearance: Like any other Oskar Blues product, crystal clear. This one has a color you’d expect -- red. The head is off-white, meringue-like, and about a finger high. Lacing is spotty but nice.

Smell: A very nice blend of hops, and it’s hard to pinpoint one aroma that I’m getting out of it ... the "aftersmell" is super sweet, which is the best part about it. After digging for a little while, I finally decided that this beer has a pretty significant pineapple and tropical fruit aroma.

Taste: Malty flavors coat the mouth quite a bit thanks to the fact that this is a red, but the intense amount of hops balance that sweetness extremely well. Peppery, spicy hops burn the back of the tongue just a little bit, and I find that it’s a great way to make sure the malt isn’t too dominant. The finish is a tad bitter, but the front is pretty sweet, so again, very nice balance here overall.

Feel: The feel on this one is nearly perfect -- it’s a pretty big beer (ABV wise and someone heavy in the feel as well), and it almost drinks like a meal. At the same time, the drinkability on this one is crazy high.

Overall: This could be my favorite Oskar Blues offering. Dale’s Pale is a great pale ale with a refreshing hop kick, Mama’s Little Yella is a must-try for anybody that’s a Bud Light only person (since it has a pretty light, but solid flavor), Deviant Dale’s is a huge, burning, whale of an IPA... but G’Knight is just better, despite how good all of those beers are. Super tasty, refreshing, gets the job done... must try.

Appearance - Pours semi-hazy, rust orange with an off-white, 2 finger head. Great retention. Lacing all around the glass with great stick.

Smell - Big caramel aroma, underlined by lesser notes of fruity hops. Orange, light grapefruit and pineapple.

Taste - More hop in the mouth than the aroma would suggest. A nice equal balance, I would say. Big caramel malt notes, too. Bready. Mild earthiness. Hops follow the nose, with juicy notes of orange, grapefruit and pineapple. Mild pith bitterness and a touch of alcohol warmth present in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate, soft carbonation. Near creamy. Goes down with ease.

Overall - Well balanced Imperial. Great flavor, great body. With so many breweries making their "imperial red" ales, the time has come to define the Imperial Red category.

A- Cloudy red amber with a slightly off white head.

A- As it sat next to me the aroma really opened up. Heavy sweet caramel malt aromas and some light citrusy hops.

T- Holy tropical shit batman. It's sweet and there are some intense tropical flavors instantly. This can is a bit older and the aroma isn't as intense as I think it would be fresh so I did not expect this at all. Light bitterness throughout. Light heat and alcohol in the finish.

M- Medium body and moderate carbonation.

D- This beer is delicious. The flavor is incredible, however it is boozy.

A - Pours a lively amber, the perfect blend of golden and red. A hard pour yields a decent finger of foamy white head. Great lacing, head retains form pretty well. Extremely active carbonation for the first few minutes.

S - Sweet and tropical. Hints of grapefruit and pineapple, very sweet, fruity smell. Still the standard, bitter hoppy fragrance underneath, but the only word I can use to describe the main aroma is Tropical. enjoyable and unique!

T - Up front there's more tropical madness happening. Bittersweet grapefruit notes, mild pineapple sweetness or even a mild mango presence. Hard to nail down the exact fruit, but TROPICAL is definitely a recurring word here. Sweet, with a great hop bitterness that lets you know you're drinking an imperial IPA. Malt presence merely reinforces the sweet, tropical profile and keeps it smooth.

M - thick enough! Smooth, with a little less carbonation than I expected, and refreshing considering both ABV and thickness. Great feel with this one.

O - A delicious, satisfying, and unique IPA. Drinkability, a standout tropical flavor and aroma profile, and a reasonable price per 4-pack, this definitely wins among double IPAs for me personally. I'll be visiting G'Knight again.

A – Pours a lightly hazy medium/dark amber with a 2 finger pale white head. Lacing is great as well.

S – Fairly sweet, dominated by caramel malts. Some tropical notes do come through, pineapple, mango. But overall malty.

T – Surprisingly and well received hop bomb here, though it is well balanced by more sweet malts. The hops are fresh and crisp, piney and sweet, more pineapple and mango. Malts are again sweet but do help to strike a balance.

M – Medium bodied, and has the typical OB carbonation level, which is borderline not enough. It is creamy and crisp at the same time. Drinkable, highly.

O – Would not know that this was an imperial if tasted blindly. It is very well balanced, the hops are nice and crisp, but not in your face. The malts are sweet and sticky, but again, are not in your face. Unique beer here, it is really a hopped up, malty red ale, it's great.

Poured from a 16 oz 1 pint can into a large snifter.

Reddish amber color. Very clear. A good amount of bubbles seen rising up vigorously. Excellent three finger thick head of off-white color. Long retention. Excellent lacing on the sides. A winner.

Aroma is filled up with citrus and flowery hop taste. An excellent aroma. Strength is medium to good. Some herbs and piney grape fruit nose. No alcohol. Very less malt in the nose.

Taste is a well balanced IPA like. A good malty front and middle. Mixed all the way with hoppy bitterness. Malt is bready and a bit roasted. Hop bitterness is moderate. Nothing imperial about it. A bit chewy. Finish is dry and bitter. Very nicely dry hopped. A lot of citrus and flowery flavors. No booze to be experienced.

Mouth feel is medium bodied. Moderate carbonation. Decent warmth. No astringency for a hop head like me.

Single 12oz can obtained for $2.10 on clearance at The Beer Store in Nashua, NH. Bottom of can is labeled with "Canned on 07-02-12 @ 08:12". Served cold in a tulip.

A: A hard pour puts up 3/4" of weird neon yellow-orange head. Dense foamy bubbles slowly come together and settle over the course of several minutes. Decent retention, leaves a nice solid layer clinging to the glass. Brew is a cloudy coppery orange. After it settles, swirling the glass brings it back quickly.

S: A large light malty sweetness pours from the glass topped by a resiny mix of soft semi-citrusy hop.

T: Fairly sweet light malt body is easly balanced by a really pungent resiny hop, much like something you'd find in a Lagunitas brew (that's a compliment). Up front its like raw citrus rind, then diversifying to a mixed citrus, grass, herb lingering very long into the finish. Quite a bit of EtOH heat is felt throughout, but with the hop this helps attenuate the sweetness and falls just short of being overwhelming.

M: This is a fairly viscous brew for the style, but a good level of carbo plus EtOH keeps it from being too heavy.

D: Pretty tasty. The alcohol is quite noticeable, bordering on offensive, but it manages to create a tenuous balance versus the sweetness of the body.

Appearance - small, lightly frothed head, Red copper in color with relative clarity
Smell - very light - smell falls flat compared to the taste, does not add enough complexity for me
Taste - sharp hops up front with strong acidity on the finish. High attenuation that you can taste. Aftertaste is bitter with notes of pine and dark earth, slightly metallic
Mouthfeel - well carbonated which adds variety to the hops as you work through the beer, medium/light body with a strong almost gritty aftertaste
Overall - A good beer, a great canned beer. I realize in retrospect it wasn't fair to drink this after drinking the Lagunitas Sucks IPA, which in my humble opinion is a brilliant and beautifully made IPA. G'Knight Imperial Red is very good, I just wish it had more of an amber balance and slightly heavier body.

A- Pours a beautiful, deep amber, copper color with a very light tan head that is lacing the hell out of my glass.

S- Nice hop/ citrus aroma with an obvious strong malt backbone.

T- Lot's of toasted and roasted malt notes here. There's a fair amount of hop bitterness on the back end but the underlying taste is that of malty sweetness. Not to boozy either. I was expecting a slight alcohol burn but there so far it has been pretty nonexistent.

M-Very smooth and medium bodied.

O- really excellent beer. Nice and smooth with some good balancing hop bitterness wrapped up in a beer that packs a punch. This is the second beer from Oskar Blues I've tried and their stock is definitely rising for me.

A saccharine brew; an imbalanced amount of molasses flavor out-muscles what little piney hops and malt it has to offer. Too sweet, too sticky. Hides its Abv well but unfortunately at the cost of its taste. I would have liked a bolder, drier more robust brew for an imperial IPA. A good effort, but an awkward compromise with a sweet sticky red ale.

The brewery calls this an "Imperial Red," so I'm going to rate it against that description. BA has it listed as an imperial IPA. If Oskar had warned me that it was an IPA, I'd be more lenient, but they did no such thing. I'm a big fan of reds and that's why I bought it. So, I'm a little cheesed off that none of the goodness of a red ale was present.
The colour was hardly red. It looked like a typical amber, with a fluffy amber-style head. The smell was simply awful. Like a full lawnmower bag that sucked up too many pine needles. The taste had way too much of that smell in it. It tastes like grass growing out of an evergreen tree, with sap dripping all over it. It was icky. If there were any malty, or toasted qualities that make a red ale so delicious, they were completely and utterly masked by this abysmal flavour. I seriously can't taste a damn thing under that over-hopped madness.
