16oz can into Duvel tulip. Didn't check for canned on date (the beer just came out).
Appearance: Free pour yields a 2 inch fizzy, rocky offwhite head that leaves a couple swatches of lacing. Pours an almost clear light copper orange. No lacing to speak of.
Smell: Tropical fruit, with a lemon and orange citrus undercurrent. Much further in the background, pungent hops.
The fruit juice character of the nose is very nice, but I want profound, pungent hops from my hot shot DIPAs. Still gets a 4.0 since the fruit notes are pretty great, and the overall balance is good as well.
Taste: Whoa, there's the dank, pungent, Summit hop hit I wanted from the aroma. Powerful dank weed and melon hops, with a mild burnt toast malt backbone (somewhat high malt sweetness as well, but nowhere near, say, 90 Minute IPA sweet). Notably low bitterness. Subtle citrus flavor accenting the oniony, funky Summit.
Tastes like 1 part Dale's Pale Ale, 2 parts GUBNA, but less bitter. Honestly, I think it's a great combo, and the flavors are really well integrated. Could stand to have more bitterness.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and creamy. Low side of moderate carbonation. Slight dryness. Really nice, and a good vehicle for that dominant, marijuana-esque hop flavor.
Overall: I thought that GUBNA with some tropical fruit and citrus would be the best DIPA I'd ever have, but I was wrong. Regardless, Deviant Dale's *does* fix the problems of GUBNA (more palatable fruit flavors to balance the onion/garlic assault from just using Summit hops), and it nails "turn Dale's Pale Ale, with it's fruit juice melange of hops and high sweetness, into an IPA."
A good DIPA, maybe even a great one. Something lacking though... I think it needs to be dryer, and perhaps some more umph to the fruit flavors (they help, but they're also a little afterthought-y). Will buy again though if this becomes year round or more available.

Oskar Blues Deviant Dale's IPA: The luxurious head sits atop a honey colored body. This beer is pretty clear, with little carbonation. The head is more than ample at the start, it does fade, but laces nicely.
Like dipping your nose into a bouquet of flowers, the aroma of this brew is outstanding. Not overpowering, but lots of subtle notes. From the start to the finish, Deviant Dales is smooth. The hops are fruity throughout, the bitter is subtle and holds the malt in check, and the finish is dry and clean.
It's more of an Imperial IPA in my book, and a very good one at that. But G'Knight is better, so when I feel like a splurge on a signature beer from Oskar Blues, it will be a TenFidy (one of the best brews period) or the outstanding G'Knight.

Canned 4-16-13, so pretty fresh.
A--Light copper, translucent, weak head. Pedestrian.
S--Outstanding aroma of earthy Columbus hops and malt, seems aggressive and complex.
T--Very good but not as complex and interesting as aroma. Fans of balance may love this, the finish is impressive, and the bitter-sweet combo is pretty unique. Ultimately, however, it is not only too sweet, but the bitter and sweet elements combine like a simplistic dichotomy rather than coming together in an interesting way that brings me back for more.
As a fan of hop-forward brews, I prefer Dale's Pale Ale.

Huh... what a well-made, if not unique, IPA from Oskar Blues. I mean, being a malt fanatic, they really allowed a bold yet smooth, plump yet balanced malt body and flavor to stand up against and compliment the requisite citrus-bomb hops.
A: orange and mostly clear, tall off-white (vaguely canary-tinged) head rises high on the pour, coats the glass with broad, sticky bands of lace
S: pungent-spicy citrus-y hops, mellow cookie-ish malt, sub-medium perfumy alcohol... pleasant, but generic
T: surprising showing of wafer-y malt surging up and settling quietly on the palate after each smack of orange/lemon-lime hops - really the fruit flavor is great and distinguishable like that... the bitterness has the proper force (backed by the push of warm booze) yet its bite is only a threat.... if the individual flavors weren't so generic for the style, the taste would be amazing considering how expertly they rendered the ingredients and process
M: again, great balance between its smooth, dextrinous yet swift body and the mellow bite of the hops - it all rolls over the tongue before disappearing 3/4 through.... alcohol certainly factors in - superb comforting warmth without any ounce of bite or burn
O: well done OB! I'll be open to having it again when I'm craving the hops

Canned on 4/04/13.
Glass: Samuel Adams Perfect Pint.
Appearance: Clear orange golden color. A moderate pour produced about three fingers of khaki colored head. A ton! The head stuck around for a longgg time. Lacing coats the sides of the glass.
Smell: Pine dominates. A little grapefruit and orange citrus. Malt lingers in the background.
Taste: As far as a "balanced" DIPA goes, this one is certainly up there on my favorites so far. It has a beautiful sweet character to it, with malt hitting the tongue at first sip, followed by a wonderful hop bitterness that presents itself at first as pine, and then as a tasty sweetness that lingers long after the beer is gone.
Mouthfeel: The body is quite thick for a DIPA, almost syrupy. However, that is combated by the dry finish, high carbonation, and oily texture. Very good.
Overall: This is a great DIPA that strays a bit from the normal big hop bomb by having a somewhat balanced malt character, while still having an extremely tasty hop presence. My new favorite camping beer ... in 16 oz. cans, too!

A: poured from a 16 oz can into a pint glass, deep amber colored with a loose white head that lingers leaving good lacing, clear
S: citrus fruit, pineapple, grapefruit, mango
T: bitter and piney up front, grapefruit peel, unfortunately there is a slight metallic hint that puts me off a bit
M: full bodied, good carbonation
O: I wonder what it would taste like if it wasn't in a can. I know it shouldn't matter, but I see the can and taste metal.

Love the can art. Just looks mean. 16 oz. can into Good Nature snifter.
A: beautiful. I'm loving nearly everything about this pour. Copper color. Calm carbonation that consistently rises to the head. One finger head that lasts a while with lacing that coats the glass as you work your way through.
S: mild hops and citrus fruit. Nothing too bold or unusual for the style.
T: man Oskar blues just doesn't disappoint. Great balence of hops and malt. I could drink this for days. Very little citrus of any coming through, but that could be due to releasing a lot of the aroma during The pour (ill try it out of the can next time). bitterness that isn't overwhelming and lingers for a while. Resiny and delicious.
M: this beer shines in this respect. Medium amount of carbonation that is very refreshing. very drinkable even at 8 percent. Nice creamy head which works wonderful with the medium body.
O: would recommend, although not sure I'd seek out again. Don't get me wrong it's a great beer, but there are much better IPAs out there that I have yet to try and I know would topple this. Great beer at a fair price. Check it out
