Poured from a 12oz. can into a snifter.

It's extremely drinkable, which almost de facto excludes it from being an imperial representation of the style depending on how stringent the criterion is.

Decent lacing, slightly off white head that didn't want to hang out, and beautiful pale orange in color.

Extremely well balanced with a mild hop aftertaste. Finish is CARAMEL, wow, I've never tasted it so concisely before.

Would have liked a little more hop in the aroma (and overall, as it's an imperial), but I did appreciate this take on an often over the top style.

Call me crazy... but first sip reminded me of Pliny.

I have drank a Dales Pale Ale and a Founders Centennial IPA previously in the evening, and this is holding it's taste on my palate quite well.

It has a smooth taste for an Imperial IPA, with crisp aftertaste.

I would rate its smell as the least impressive trait, not bad, just not defining.

A slightly malty aftertaste, that doesn't make you forget you're drinking an IPA.

Good stuff.. wish I could find it more often.

poured from a 12oz. can into a DFH spiegelau. canned about 1.5 months ago

appearance: pours a golden copper with a finger and a half head of white creamy, creamy foam. tiny bubbles come from underneath. as the brew goes down a frothy 1/8 finger head remains on top.

smell: smells of caramel and beer bread hit hardest, then citrus hops, with a small amout of spiciness and a very pinch of bananna.

taste: hit with all the malts at first. caramel and some toast first, rye is in there if youre really looking for it. then a good deal of bitterness follows, alot of floral and citrus hops and that pinch of spice comes out. there is a slight amount of booze in the taste but not enough to be too offensive

mouthfeel: this is one of the heavier ipas. to me it feels like murphys oil soap with bubbles (which is a good thing) love the way this feels on the mouth.

overall: i am very surprised this is not in the 90s thwn it comes to ratings. this can satisfy both hopheads and those who enjoy a "balanced" beer. the 3 different malts really give this beer some character and the hops can equally balance them. id highly recomend this brew to anyone who loves ipas, imperials, or barleywines. truly original. oskar blues never disappoints.

Gubna pours a slightly hazy gold amber with a thin head. The aroma is sweet with pungent and fruity hops as well as a nice fruity orange character. The aroma is a bit mild, but the flavor makes up for it. Sweet malt mixes with fruity citrusy and herbal hops. There is an almost tea like quality to the hops and a deep resiny bitterness follows as the big malty sweetness rides through the finish. The alcohol is well hidden, and I don't get any of the cat piss character that some people complain about with Summit. If I could get this one locally it would be in my regular rotation.

A- Completely clouded orange copper body with a small off white head.

A- Malty earthy aroma. Slight citrus notes.

T- Smooth sweet taste with an ever present bitterness and a noticeable alcohol throughout. Slight metallic hit in the aftertaste.

M- Medium-heavy body and moderate cabonation.

D- Enjoyable, but not my favorite DIPA. Surprisingly easy drinking for a 10% DIPA. Lacking a bit in the hop flavor compared to others. The bitterness isn't all that intense either.

Pours a clear golden yellow with a white head that settles to a ring around the glass. Honey biscuit, lots of pine, with grapefruit and Pineapple. Biscuit, wheat bread crust, lots of pine again, some juicy fruit as described in the aroma, and lots of piney bitterness. Feel is middling, finish is somewhat dry.

This thing ain't messing around. Goes straight for your tastebuds with a select amount of flavor. I typically like my hops to be more varied, but this is a good choice. If the price point was cheaper I'd drink this more often than once a year.

Don't remember where/when I first had this. Recent tasting on tap at Broad Axe Tavern for this review.

Clear amber pour with a finger of white head; moderate retention and lacing. Citrus and pine hops dominant in the nose, backed with a malty base. More of the same in the taste, citrus and pine hops, somewhat resinous, solid bitterness, with a bready maltiness in the background. Medium body, dry, and solid overall.

Oskar Blues Brewing Company - Gubna Imperial IPA

Look - Pours a slightly hazy copper amber with a generous foamy head. Nice sticky lacing.

Smell - Aroma is mouth-watering citrus hops that are accompanied by headstrong dark rye malts. Like a DIPA meets a strong ale or dunkel.

Taste - Quite malty in front and pine hoppy in back, then both come in and have a seat. Unique, not gentle, almost a bit contradictory here but interesting.

Mouthfeel - It literally rests like a strong ale and a DIPA had a baby. Also boozy from the first sip. Over time the rye seems to almost get spicy.

Overall - A unique brew that all DIPA fans should at least try. For me the downfall was too many malts versus the hops.

12oz can into a pint glass.

Pours a clear light copper with a rock solid one finger white head. The head retention on this is absolutely outstanding along with the lacing. It forms nearly a solid sheet all the way down the sides of the glass.

Aroma has a very earthy, rye, dank character that is quite different from many other IIPA's that tend to focus on the citrus. The rye and earthy hops blend quite nicely and give a very inviting smell if not a little one dimensional.

The flavor continues the earthy characters with more rye and some musty and dank notes. Some pine and tree bark along with a slick mouthfeel that feels very rye-like. Bitterness is quite high and the finish is dry for a beer of this strength which I greatly appreciate. One think I cannot stand is a super sweet IIPA.

Overall, a very nice and quite different beer that is a great pleasure to drink. It tends to be a little one dimensional at times with the pine and earth but I quite like it. A little pricey but really worth every penny.

EVENIN' GUBNA!

A 10% DIPA in the middle of the day because it's Friday and I'm an adult and can do that sort of thing.

Clear golden orange and, after a bit of a hard pour, a lovely, huge, persistent head. The aromas don't exactly leap out of the glass and consume the senses, but come across as a more relaxed blend of sweetened grapefruit and pungent, dank, earthy hops. Yes, there is a sort of grassy onion brothiness that takes over the back end. The flavor is full of hops...bitter, oily grapefruit, spicy rye, pineapple, and resin. A little sugary, but not overly sweet or anything. Fullish, creamy body and bitter. A solid, pungent, warming DIPA. Surprisingly not way over the top, like I was expecting.

GUBNA pours an attractive clear copper with an impressive 2 finger white head that laces quite well in the glassware. The aroma is very malty, yet there is a hop presence in there along with a detectable note of alcohol (no surprise @ 10% abv).

The flavors are bitter as is the aftertaste: one single hop duking it out against 3 types of malt and doing an admirable job. As malty as this IIPA is, I still found it palatable and enjoyable though I prefer a more pronounced citrus infusion (Heady Topper grapefruit blast remains unrivaled).

There most certainly is a respectable hop character to this Double IPA, and at 10% abv it was very drinkable, yet the malts play center stage. At $16 for 4 12 oz. cans, I can't help but factor that into the review: it is pricey and relatively one dimensional in the delivery of flavors. GUBNA is darn good, worth a try, and is quite a strong, but lacks subtleties that keep it from the level of excellence. Another IIPA in a can that makes me appreciate fresh Heady Topper more than ever.

Had on tap at The Local Miami. Poured into a Bell's pint glass.

A- Pours a copper color with a 1/2 inch white head that retains well before gradually falling to a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a mostly full sheet of sheer surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves stalactites of lacing behind.

S- Pungent citrusy hop aroma with just a hint of some sweet malt.

T- Flavor is also of the citrusy hop variety with a firm but restrained bitterness and traces of cereal grain malt sweetness. Notes of lemon, grapefruit and pineapple. After a few sips, the bitterness begins to take hold along with the alcohol. This could also be due to the fact that the beer was served at a warmer temp than is customary but I'm not complaining.

M- Sticky, oily, leaves a layer of residue on the tongue. Medium carbonation, same with the body.

O- I haven't had this beer in years so this is obviously my first time trying the single-hopped version...I don't notice much of a difference but, again, it's been years so whatever. Great beer!

12 ounce can
Served in a tulip glass

A - It is amber with golden highlights. The head reached two inches and is off-white in color.

S - The aroma is subtle citrus. It becomes more apparent as it warms.

T - This beer tastes better than I recall. I get some bitter citrus components. This beer is interesting because I can taste the bitterness clear on the back of my tongue.

M - It is pretty smooth with a medium body. It almost feels slick going down the gullet.

O - What a difference a week makes. I tasted this for the first time last Sunday. I was unimpressed and downright disappointed. I like it a lot better today. I would buy this again after today's tasting. Well maybe not at its current price. I can get better for less.

Bright clear copper hue with a good bit of sticky off white head that dies down to a thin lace. Super bitter citric rind and fresh hop resin on the nose.

Creamy smooth mouthfeel. Initial rye sweetness with a touch of spice. Rich sweet and spicy malt body leads to a super bitter citric rind flavors with a nice dollop of grapefruit flavor as well. People are claiming to get onion scents from this but i dont. Rye is actually a really nice addition lending a sweetness and spiciness which adds complexity to the summit hop.

12 ounce can into tulip glass, canned on 3/11/2013. "Evenin’ Gubna!" slogan. Pours lightly hazy golden orange color with a 2 finger fairly dense and fluffy off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty foamy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of grapefruit, orange zest, orange rind, lemon zest, light caramel, honey, pine, floral, grass, and floral earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of hop and malt notes, without being overly sweet; though it is pretty muted for a DIPA. Taste of grapefruit, orange zest, orange rind, lemon zest, light caramel, pine, floral, grass, and piney spiciness. Good amount of pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, citrus zest, citrus rind, light caramel, pine resin, floral, and piney spiciness on the finish for a while. Very nice balance and good complexity of hop and malt flavors; with a great bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors present after the finish. Medium carbonation and full bodied; with a slick and sticky mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a very nice DIPA. Good balance and complexity of hop and malt flavors; and quite smooth to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.

Poured from the can into a Dogfish Head Ale glass. Canned March 11th 2013. Kind of amazed I always let this one slip by for trying. Brevard North Carolina brewed.

A very gorgeous looking beer. Orange brass amber, and super crystal clear, with super slow rising carbonation. Head is large at three fingers with lots of staying power. Fluffy and a little soapy looking too with an off white very light creme tan color. Lots of large soap sized bubbles in the collar.

Nose is a mix of dank earth, and lots of bready style malts. Strangely muted a bit. Some small hint of citrus hop angle, but fairly quiet.

Palate hits with a good mix of dank hop punch, mostly in the finish. Lots of pine and earth hops, yup there is definatly a large onion and garlic finish to this but without a large sweetness of malt backbone. The mouthfeel on this is large and expansive, lots of resin like coating everywhere, and no sense of carbonation. Finishes with lots of pine, earth, and raw onion punch. Very large lingering bitterness that gets into burnt wood and pine more often, it's a nice compliment. Warming stomach boozy character but not in taste.

Overall a real bitter and different DIPA, than the rest. It's nose I thought wold be bigger though, but I do enjoy this.

A – Bright translucent copper. Head is tall and has great lacing.

S – Pineapple, lemon, citrus fruits here.

T – Sweet at first, lightly so. Then a big bright hop bomb comes through, lemon, pine and fresh citrus. Nice.

M – On the full side for the style. The finish is long and lingering.

O – Awesome redux for this one. The balance in this is much better than before. Great summer seasonal.

Canned on 3/18/2013 stamped on bottom of can so just over two weeks old! Pours gold, completly see through, almost an inch of head, smells like fresh citrusy goodness. Tastes a bit different than I expected based on the look and smell, more balance, less of a hop punch. It does leave a little alcohol flavor and burn but you would expect that at %10 ABV. This is a tasty beer and I do enjoy the hop flavor but the flavor it leaves in your mouth is the alcohol. I'm guessing to up the abv on this beer they added a good amount of corn sugar. I know they changed the recipe a bit but I was hoping for a larger smack from the summit hops (becuase I actually enjoy them) which I have heard about.

Overall this is not a bad DIPA, just slightly too much alcohol flavor for me. If they tuned this down to say 8% I could see this being one of the better DIPA's but thats not what they were going for. They were going for a high ABV kick in the mouth and that is what you have here! The alchol is a little distracting for me. Paid $13.99 so a bit pricey. Now that its a seasonal I might pick up a four pack next year and revisit with the Gubna.

I picked up a bottle of Oskar Blues GUBNA Imperial IPA last week for $3.39 at The Lager Mill. This is the last of my Oskar Blues stash, I hope this turns out good, but I don't have the highest hopes since I wasn't a fan of their IPA, but hopefully this one will be better, so lets see how it goes. Canned on 2/18/13. Poured from a 12oz can into a snifter.

A- The can has the typical Oskar Blues look with a nice dark red color, it looks nice. It poured a nice light orange/yellow color that took on a nice dark orange and golden color when held to the light with two fingers worth of slightly off white head that died down to a thin layer that stayed till the end and left a good amount of lacing behind. This was a pretty good looking DIPA, I have no complaints at all.

S- The aroma starts off with a higher amount of sweetness that has a slight honey aroma to it and it's followed by loads of hops that impart some floral hop aromas along with a light amount of onion and garlic hops aromas, but its the citrus hops that seems to stand out the most and they impart a nice citrus and slight tropical fruit aroma with grapefruits seeming to stick out the most. The malts barely show up and impart a slight grainy and white bread like aroma. This beer had a good aroma, it wasn't the most balanced but the citrus hops made for a nice and fruity aroma.

T- The taste seems to be fairly similar to the aroma and it starts of with a medium amount of sweetness that had a real slight honey like flavor to it followed by some light malts flavors with some grain and bready flavors and a light caramel malts like flavor. Up next quickly comes the hops that are pretty intense and they are a nice mixture of floral and citrus hops with the citrus hops sticking out the most and imparting a nice grapefruit rind like flavor. On the finish there's some slightly warming alcohol that lets you know this is a higher gravity beer and there's a higher amount of bitterness with a hoppy, citrusy, slightly bitter aftertaste. This was a nice tasting DIPA, but I thought it could have a little more balanced, it was a little overly bitter and the alcohol could have been hidden just a little better.

M- Not that smooth, a little creamy, sticky, resiny, on medium side of being full bodied with a slightly lower amount of medium carbonation. I thought the mouthfeel was OK, but it wasn't that smooth and it seemed a little on thick side for the style, it could use a little work.

Overall I thought this was a decent beer and it was a slightly above average example of the style, this DIPA was big and bold, but I thought it was a little rough around the edges and it lacked the refinement that some of the best of the style have. This beer didn't have good drinkability, it wasn't that smooth and it was fairly filling, but the flavors did a decent job at holding my attention, but with the high amount of bitterness and all the other factors I think one would be enough for me and I wouldn't feel like drinking two in a row, one is more than enough for me. What I liked the most about this beer was the appearance, it was was pretty good and the lacing was really nice. What I liked the least about this beer was the lack of drinkability, it wasn't smooth and it doesn't really keep me coming back for more. I might buy this beer again, but if Hopslam, Double Trouble, or Lagunitas Sucks are on the shelf then this beer will be overlooked, and it was a little overpriced, I recommend it if you really like DIPA's but I don't think it has the quality's to be a top tier DIPA. All in all I thought this was a solid DIPA, but I don't think I will be revisiting it soon with all the other great DIPA's out there. Now that I finished all the beers that they released to Michigan I think Oskar Blues is a pretty average Brewery, I was dissapointed in a couple of their beers and I didn't find anything that I really liked, but I'm not going to rule out anything till I try Ten Fidy, till next time Oskar Blues. Old Chub still seems to be my favorite so far.

12oz can (canned on 03/11/13 @ 08:37) poured into a milkshake pilsner glass.

Appearance: Gorgeous looking beer. Bright totally clear golden-amber-copper color. Thick off-white head - very persistent foam the whole way down the glass. Lots and lots of persistent lacing. Bubbles moved up slowly through the beer - nice beer to look at and admire.

Smell: Slight hint of pine/mild grapefruit along with some lemon. Mellow and nice - not overpowering.

Taste: Very smooth malt up front with a nice caramel flavor tempered with the hop flavors. Not sure I picked up the rye malt spiciness but it may have been in there. Some hops early on but most notable at the finish with lemon and a long lingering piney (maybe sweet onion) finish. Hoppy, but balance with malts and not smack-you-around hoppy.

Mouthfeel: Creamy smooth. Nicely thick. Only a little bit of stickiness of hop oils on the teeth. Carbonation present is exactly right - not fizzy, not scrubbing, but there just enough to compliment everything.

Overall / Drinkability: I know some people want their IIPA/DIPAs to be hops, hops, and more hops, but I prefer this type. Hoppy, but not hop flavors are not dominating everything else, and a great appearance and mouthfeel compliment the hops and the strength of the beer. I feel this is a damn good beer, and it's dangerously drinkable as well. I want another one but I know I'll get loopy and regret it later if I have another one. A very well crafted beer.

Canned in Feb poured into a FSW tulip.

A: Pours a golden color with a nice 3 finger fluffly white head. Tons of lacing on the glass.

S: Juicy sweet aroma. With a little bit of a bitter hop aroma bite. This aroma is fairly one note for me though. Juicy sweetness over powers the aroma and straggles anything else trying to get through.

T: Grapefruit, citrus and pine hit the palate first with a slight malty backbone. Resin crisp finish. Very sweet fruit with citrus being the predominant flavor here.

M: Medium bodied, sticky resin sweetness coats the mouth. Fairly bitter dry finish. Lacks that crisp punch that I crave in an IPA. Has more of a rounded feel.

O: A solid DIPA that hides the alcohol well. Very sweet and pretty bitter. Not my favorite but glad to have tried it.

Canned on 3/11/13 and reviewed on 3/23/13. Poured into a Goose Island tulip. The pour is clear and amber-gold with 2 fingers of rocky white head. Fresh, floral, lemony nose with hints of pine and resin.

Medium body. Not as bitter as I thought it would be given the nose. Some toast and sweet marmalade flavors up front and a harsh attack of hops at mid-palate. The bitterness is more resiny than fruity and never completely subdues the malty sweetness, giving the beer a velvety feel in the mouth. Nice dry finish with impressive sustainment. Sticky, syrupy hop oils seem to cling to the sides of your mouth.

An above-average IIPA that I'm glad I had the opportunity to try but probably won't buy again. There are simply too many IIPAs out there that are superior to this one. This one has a nice balance of bitter and sweet, but the bitterness is too resiny and not fruity enough to suit me. The finish is quite nice though.

Funky, oniony, and well off. The malt bill is good, crackers, caramel, hint of cinnamon? The looks is clear well carbonated and there's some lacing. The thing is I smell onions, I don't get anything else with it. A good try I guess but just falls short.

The alcohol isn't masked and it isn't well bodied. All those negatives said it isn't bad at all. It's a big ipa and well put together for the style it's just that flavors don't mix well at all. I still think this is better than average beer, it's just so weird.

12 ounce can poured into a snifter.

A: Pours a clear copper color with a two finger head and excellent lacing.

S: Piney and citrus hops, grass, and onions. There are some sweet malts and a touch of alcohol as well.

T: Very hoppy up front, both citrus and pine. Cut grass, onions, and a hint of spice are present along with the sweet malts. Interesting mix for sure. The alcohol is barely noticeable for such a strong beer.

M: Medium bodied with ample carbonation.

O: Another winner from Oskar Blues!! They're quickly becoming one of my favorite breweries.
