a clean golden yellow with a finger of white head and excellent head retention. smells of pilsner malt, grass, slight citrus, sugar frosting. slightly bitter up front (grassy earthy hops), sugary malt backbone, bready. light bodied, crisp and refreshing, with high carbonation.

a very refreshing excellent tasting session beer. a must have for summer time, i'll be keeping this in my fridge all summer long.

Mama's Little Yella Pils doesn't fool anybody on the pour - bright and vibrant straw-yellow with a medium haziness to it. The white cap settles quick but leaves a few lines of lacing near the top of the glass. Pretty refreshing looking beer.

The aroma is actually a bit more sweet than bitter, typically not the case for "Czech Pilsners". Usually the musky and leafy hop aromas take over, but this thing is loaded with sweetness that smells an awful lot like corn. Yup, big-time corn presence. Kind of malty, but just a light sweetness from the pilser malts. Hops are there, but not really "out-and-about"... kind of just hidden a bit. Slightly musty and earthy. Definitely hops of the Noble variety, but perhaps not enough of them. Overall, a mild and quiet aroma.

Sweet corn also leads the way for the taste profile, hitting quick and fast. Hops come gliding in after the initial sip; earthy, musky, and surprisingly more bitter than I was expecting. The bitterness sits on the palate for a bit as it fades into the finish with a slightly corny and floral aftertaste. Lots of yeast is noticeable in the finish, as well, although it isn't incredible standoutish. Not exactly packed with flavor, but not bad, either. It's got a nice sweet-to-bitter gradient that plays on the palate quite nicely. Thin bodied, not quite full enough to be called medium yet, with lots of carbonation. Nice, crispy mouth feel that is expected of most pilsners.

Have I had better pilsners? Yeah. But this one certainly isn't bad. I don't know if it should be labeled a "Czech Pilsner", though. But it makes for a pretty damn good American Pale Lager. IMO, this is what New Belgium's "Shift" Pale Lager was trying to be. I'd take this over that one any day. Would be great for long, hot days out in the sun.

Pours a clear pale gold with many tiny bubbles ascending into a thick white head that settles slowly and leaves behind plenty of pretty white lace. Aroma is crisp and of sweet cereal and some faint hops in the background. Flavor is of crackers and a refreshing snap of bitterness. Mouthfeel is appropriately light-medium. This is what a bud or miller wants to be when it grows up.

12 oz. can, bottom of the can reads canned on 12/19/2012 @ 11:58, NO STEMS NO STICKS. Sounds like something I've heard before, but never regarding beer. Attractive plain simple styled can, and an attention grabbing name. Excited to try this beer, my third from Oskar Blues Brewing Co.

Poured into a Firestone Walker pint glass.

A - Moderately aggressive pour yields about two and a half fingers of fizzy fluffy doughy white head. Light murky lemon yellow colored body, with the tiniest amount of bubbles lazily floating to the top. Scattered spotty lacing.

S - Smells like malts and fresh roasted corn husk. Nothing complicated arising from this one, but smells delicious, and right on the mark. Authentic, natural corn kernel aroma, as opposed to sh**ty artifical adjunct ingredients.

T - Typical malty / corn pilsner type taste, although less bloating and carbonated than the typical swill that permeates the market. And a much more natural and authentic corn kernel type taste, as opposed to artificial adjunct crap ingredients. Crisp, clean, and delicious. A sugary, fruity green apple skin presence emerges as this beer warms.

M - Crisp, clean, smooth. Fruity apple / sugary type notes linger. Slight tart cheap champagne like carbonation, like most pilsners I have encountered. Highly drinkable stuff, though.

Overall, a beer I would definitely drink again. Not the most complex beer by Oskar Blues Brewing Co., but a fine representation of it's style. Crisp & clean, lightly bodied, and superbly well-balanced with a gracious 5.30% abv, a quaffable and sessionable beer.

I picked up a can of Oskar Blues Mama's Little Yella Pils last week for $1.69 at The Lager Mill. I'm still working my way through Oskar Blues lineup, I haven had a Pilsener in a while so this one seems like a good choice, lets see how it goes. Canned on 2/22/13. Poured from a 12oz can into a Pilsener glass.

A- I like the way this can looks, its got a nice clean look to it. It poured a nice and bright yellow color that took on a nice golden hue when held to the light with two fingers worth of of white head that died down to a thin ring that stayed till the end and it left some nice spotty lacing behind. This is a good looking Pilsener, there's not a thing wrong with the way it looks.

S- The aroma starts off with a lower amount of medium sweetness followed by loads of malts that impart a nice bready and biscuit like aroma that seems to stick out the most. Up next comes the hops which are on the lighter side and impart a grassy and slightly earthy hops aromas. The aroma was ok, it was pretty clean but the malts seems to be too dominate and the hops aromas barely came through, it's a little weak on the hops for a Pilsener's aroma.

T- The taste seems to be pretty similar to the aroma and it starts off with a lower amount of medium sweetness that had a real slight honey flavor to it followed by loads of malts that imparted lots of bready and biscuit like aromas with the bread aromas sticking out the most. On the finish there's a light earthy and grassy hop flavor followed by a pretty light amount of bitterness. I thought the taste was just slightly above average, the malts were nice but too dominant for the style and it would be nice if the hops imparted a little more flavor and some noticeable bitterness.

M- Smooth, clean, crisp, a little on the dry side, lighter bodied, with a nice amount of medium bitterness. The mouthfeel was very good and it was pretty true to style.

Overall I was little let down with this beer and I thought it was pretty close to being an average Czech Pilsener, the malts were nice but the hops were lacking in aromas, flavors, ans bitterness which made this beer unbalanced for the style. This beer had good drinkability, it was smooth, clean, and not filling, but the flavors didn't really hold my attention, I wouldn't want another one right now, but I could see this being a decent lawn mower beer in the summer. What I liked the most about this beer was the mouthfeel, it was really good, it worked well with this beer, and it was pretty true to style. What I liked the least about this beer was the lack of balance and hop character, more hops flavors and bitterness would really help this beer out and make it truer to style. I don't think I would buy this again, this might be nice to have a couple on the disc golf course, but at that point I would probably be better off saving some money and drinking an AAL instead, I can't say I really recommend this beer, but if I had a friend who wasn't that in to craft beer, I would offer him one of these. All in all this beer was a little bit of a let down, it just didn't have the bitterness and balance that I look for in the style. So far this is my least favorite beer from Oskar Blues, I just wasn't a fan of this, but I'm still hopeful that they make a beer that I will really enjoy, better luck next time guys.

Will Rogers never met a man he didn’t like; I have. However, I have never met a beer from Oskar Blues that I did not like. This crisp Czech-style pilsner will definitely save you the expense of going to Prague for delicious beer of this style. (However, as someone who has been to this glorious city, I do recommend such a trip.)

This beer is a translucent amber color and it is alive with carbonation bubbles scurrying to the top of the glass, which is crowned by a thin foam. There is a nice nose of lemon and pepper; meanwhile, the palate is treated to a pleasant blend of lemongrass and peach and then tricked at the end with some mild hoppiness. As expected, the mouthfeel is dry and crisp, the obvious criteria for this style. And this from the same mad geniuses who gave us the chunky chewiness of Gubna (See My Review.)

A: light sunflower with a touch of haze. Some liveliness pouring from the can. S: smell is very mild, almost undetectable, with traces of lemon and lavender. T: Unsweetened lemonade at the front transitions to a mild grapefruit with a hoppy, coniferous, and semi-bitter dry finish. This pils has a nice overall balance but more flavor would be generated with an upgrade to the aromatics. Good complexity and body.

Can into pint glass.

Clear and golden. Bubbles racing to the top. Left a nice head and lacing on the glass.

Clean grassy, hop smell.

Taste very good. Malts and bits of hops.

Clean and crisp. Finish is refreshing and dry.

Easy to drink an ocean of these since it is what beer should be across the board. Nothing fancy, just glorious beer.

Poured into a Schaumburger pilsner glass. Pours a light golden amber with a one finger white head with good retention and lacing. Aroma of bready malt, grassy hops and a hint of wheat. Flavor follows with grassy hops and sweet malt, finshing with lightly spicy grassy hops, slightly dryer. Light bodied. A decent pilsner; nothing exciting, but pleasant to drink; the hop finish grew on me as I drank the glass.

Canned 2/25/13 "Skippy Hour", so the beer's only two weeks old. Sweet! I was excited to try some Oskar Blues, since they just recently started shipping some of their staples to Michigan.

Appearance: Crystal clear... really just looks like yellow water. Brilliantly attractive (makes me sound British...). There's a nice, pillowy white head that's about one finger and sticks around. Lacing's virtually nonexistent, but that's no big deal.

Smell: Right on the front I can tell you that I find that this beer smells (and tastes) like a QUALITY domestic beer. The smell is of mellow malts that I get in most adjunct lagers, but there's nothing "off" about it, which I get in a lot of AALs. Perfectly mild and malty, as a pilsner ought to have.

Taste/feel: Solid, solid, solid... almost exactly like the smell, with what seems to be a dash of hops on the finish. I hate using the word, but this really is a CRISP beer. I love the sweetness I get on this one, and that fantastic malty, mild hop taste on the finish. Like I've said, it's like a well made domestic beer. Keep in mind I'm two beers deep, but I'm really trying to focus on this beer and look at it as un-buzzed as possible... I really do think it's a very solid beer. And the fact that it comes from a can? Forget about it. Mama's Little Yella Pils HAS to be (keep in mind this is my first craft can) my favorite canned beer. Even if I happen to stumble upon a bigger, better, and bolder craft beer in a can (regardless of style), I seriously feel like I'll be coming to this beer again and again to be my go-to summer beer. It's just wonderfully flavorful (while still being light), easy drinking, and tasty. Definitely try it out.

Pours a brilliant light golden color with a foamy one inch white head that dissipates somewhat quickly, leaving no lacing.

Aroma is grainy and slightly sweet, with floral hop accents. Malt is almost more bready than cracker-like. Honeysuckle comes to mind.

Flavor reveals more perfumey and floral notes, which are at the base throughout. Fairly bready malt hits mid palate and is somewhat nutty, carrying into a slightly dry, bitter finish. There's a hint of citrus emerging late.

Body is moderate, with moderate carbonation and a touch of grainy astringency at the finish.

More bready and hoppy than most pilsners I've had. Which also means more character, and that's fine with me.

Appearance - Pours a hazy, pale straw yellow with a white, finger width head. Good retention. Leaves a nice ring of lace around the top of the glass, with streaks and small spots down the side.

Smell - Grainy malts and subtle sweetness. Faint earthy, grassy hop character completes the aroma.

Taste - Follows the nose. Strong grain bill upfront, backed by moderate notes of grassy bitterness. Very low levels of diacetyl seem to come through around mid-taste. Finishes with lingering grassy bitterness and a slightly twangy metallic aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Light in body with fair cabronation. Smooth, approachable and easy on the swallow. Very subtle creaminess near the finish.

Overall - Fairly solid pilsner. Not one I'd look to purchase again, but I wouldn't turn it down if offered. I can't understate the grainy bite of this beer. It's up there with a lot of the grain bombs I've had in my time.

12 oz can poured into a pilsner glass at slightly warmer than fridge temperature.

L – Pale gold color with a big 4-finger bubbly, white head. Decent retention and some patchy lacing. Initially, the beer was clear with a lot of bubbles. However, I got some sediment from the bottom of the can into the glass, and the beer got pretty cloudy. It clears up nicely after some time.

S – There’s a nice malt aroma with grainy, bready, and cereal notes. There are some spicy and somewhat floral hop aromas here, too. Really nice pilsner aroma. Possibly a touch of diacetyl is apparent, but that’s ok.

T – It pretty much follows the aroma with sweet bready and grainy malts with a touch of diacetyl followed by smoothly bitter, spicy, and earthy hops. It’s probably not as hoppy as most Czech pilsners, but that’s really alright with me.

F – Light-to-medium-bodied with great carbonation, a slightly creamy but also refreshing mouthfeel, and slightly bitter, spicy, and dry finish. A touch of bitter and spicy hop flavor lingers on the tongue for a bit.

O – This is a really nice and drinkable pilsner. It may not be the quintessential example of a Czech pilsner (the noble hops are too subdued), but it is damn tasty. It’s not my favorite brew from Oscar Blues but it’s a good one nonetheless.

12 oz can

Pours a light, slightly hazy lemony gold with a sugar white lacing for a head.

Smells of light lemon citrus, dry grassy malts and faint dry hops.

Flavor starts off with a grassy hop bite followed by a light citrus sweetness, lemony with a hint of sugar.

Medium to light body with a light tingling carbonation on the roof of the mouth.

A highly drinkable light pilsner, a bit zestier than you might expect from a pils and pretty darn good. I would seek this out again and encourage others to do the same. Solid lager.

12oz can poured into a pilsner glass. Reviewed from some quick notes.

A: Dull golden color. mild haze. Rocky white head has great retention. Broken rings and patches of clumpy lacing.

S: Doughy and bready. Grassy and herbal hops are fairly restrained.

T: Bread and dough. Sweet-ish with a slight honeyed impression. Herbal hop character creeps in and builds a little on the mid-palate. Grassy. Drying finish of grass and cracker.

M: Body is light but not without substance. Slight firmness, creamy. Light scrubbing carbonation. Smooth enough. Good.

O: On the sweet side for a pils. Very easy to drink. Downright quaffable, in fact. It almost feels a little dumbed-down. It could stand to be a little more-so in many ways, but it's still a very respectable brew.

Poured from a 12 oz. can into a Sam Adams "Perfect Pint" glass.

Appearance: Pours a yellowish golden orange with a lot of bubbles. Big four finger white head with good retention. Leaves a lot of lacing sticking around the glass.

Smell: A malty, grainy classic pilsener aroma. Pale malts and wheat with good hints of biscuit, crackers, straw, cereal grains, and yeast. Nicely earthy and spicy with a decent presence of Noble and Saaz hops with a little grass. Also some hints of lemon zest and a little orange. Fairly musty. Solid European Pilsener aroma.

Taste: Like the aroma hints, a nice malty classic pilsener taste. Sweet pale malts and wheat grains with a taste of straw, biscuit, crackers, yeast, and cereal grains. Some notes of citrus lemon and orange. Solid earthy presence of hops with some notes of spicy Noble and Saaz European hops. Fairly grassy and musty. Also a little bit of honey like sweetness. A pretty solid taste.

Mouthfeel: Body is on the lighter side of medium with a moderate amount of carbonation. Crisp, creamy, and pretty clean and smooth.

Overall: A very solid take on the European Pilsener style. Nicely grainy and grassy with a good balance.

Appearance: Pours a slightly hazy golden yellow bottle with a medium sized white head. Nice carbonation, pleasant looking beer.

Smell: Sweet bready malts and a touch of spicy Saaz hops. Appetizing.

Taste: A nice balance between the biscuity bready sweet pale malts and the ever so gentle crisp spicy hops. Flavor lingers ever so slightly on the palate.

Mouthfeel: Refreshing and full bodied. Nice, smooth aftertaste.

Overall: All in all, not my absolute favorite Czech pilsner, but still a nice reminder of why I love this style so much. Full breadier malt flavor than an thin herbal German pilsner and slightly hoppier than a Munich helles, the Czech pilsner seems to strike the perfect balance.

Poured from a 12 oz. can. There is a canned on date stamped on bottom of can. Clear and bright, golden hue with a foamy white-head; your attractive, typical pilsner pour.

The weakest aspect of this lager: upon opening the can, the aroma was actually sightly skunky but after pouring into a pilsner glass, some of the familiar pilsner aromas came forth, albeit faintly; namely some spicy noble hops and lemon.

This pilsner has an interesting flavor profile. The sweetness is very evident much like a helles style. The familiar pilsner hop bitterness comes through next and lingers on the palate. There is a very faint metallic note in the aftertaste that detracts from the overall flavor.

Fuller bodied with a thicker mouthfeel for the style. Nice, spritzy carbonation keeps the lager refreshing.

This is a different interpretation for a pilsner with a heavier feel and sweeter palate. Overall, it is quaffable and flavorful but reminds me of a full-bodied helles than a pilsner.

Great classic pale yellow hay color with a little bit of haze to this brew. Good head and a nice residual foam almost all twelve ounces.

Love the grassy hops with some barley field and lightly toasted malts give an aroma of crackers. Smells crisp.

Crackery malts with some unmalted barley grain flavors. Makes me think of eating crackers right after you mowed the lawn. Grass and maybe some lemon from the hops.

This is a crisp, malty, and hoppy pilsner. Crisp, flavorful and easy to drink. A little drym chalky maybe, but refreshing and crisp. Went well with my Thai dinner.

A - Golden pour with a soapy white foam that looks like car wash soap. It is easily a couple of inches high before settling. The lacing is patchy. Slight carbonation noted. Honestly, this looks impressive.

S - Some light grains, light malt, and a slight skunky smell.

T - Fresh flavor that has a crisp crackling of grain. Light yeast profile and a dash of noble hops. There isn't much complexity at all; but this is a pilsener that just does a solid job and is ad advertised.

M - Great mouthfeel, nice balance, and mild carbonation. Leaves a mild raspy grate on the tongue. Easily sessionable and on a hot day would quench your thirst.

O - I'm a fan. This harkens back to a time when beer styles were simple, effective, and enjoyable to drink as a go-to beer. I like this as much as many of its Euro contemporaries.

12-oz. can into a pint glass at my house on Nov. 30, 2012 (purchased for $1.99 at Bine and Vine in Kensington (San Diego, Calif.) on Nov. 29, 2012. Hazy golden straw with two fingers of white head with pretty good retention. Nice on the sides, bubbly and decent on the top.

Smelled corn, bread, mild skunkiness, grass, cereal, honey and a bit of hops. Like a good pilsner should smell like I guess.

Tasted pretty close to the smell, which was pretty decent. Not as skunky. Got corn, bread, cereal, hay and honey.

Light body. Thin texture. Average-to-lively (above average) carbonation. Abrupt smooth finish.

A pretty good pilsner, one of the best I’ve had. I would recommend this to anyone.

Serving type: can
