Oskar Blues’ trailblazing move to can craft beer has paid off handsomely as rival brewers emulate their model. The cans are certainly a convenience - the highlight of my most recent backpacking trip was dredging several six-packs of Oskar Blues from a nearby lake and enjoying them near a fire. However, my love affair with Oskar Blues is not with their love for aluminum, but the care they put into their beer. Dale’s Pale Ale, Ten Fidy and Old Chub have all been favorites, and more recently I’ve become enamored with the Gubna. However, while excellence is a trend in all these brews, there are places in Oskar Blues’ line-up where I find myself a little disappointed. Their ‘Mama’s Little Yella Pils’ is one of these. It took me a long time to develop a fondness for pilsners, but when I did I was hooked. Despite my conversion, Oskar Blues’ take on the pilsner is less than addicting. It features a clear, crisp pilsner taste, with a mineral aftertaste, but the flavor seems light, and uncharacteristically bland. Dale’s and Old Chub are special and unique, particular to Oskar Blues, and singularly great. The pils fades into obscurity, muddled by its own lack of flavors. It’s a pilsner, sure, and drinkable, sure, but not memorable.

Canned on 04/23/13, consumed on 05/24/13. Nice and fresh!

A - Medium yellow, not much head or carbonation. Kinda disappointed.

S - Medium hoppiness, a little dank, pretty average.

T - Solid, nothing out of this world. Had the sweetness and overall flavor of a Czech pilz, but overall kind of bland. Did have some spice to it, which was definitely noticeable in the aftertaste. Black pepper maybe? That part I really liked. Also seemed to taste a bit better once it warmed up a few degrees.

F - Easy, couldn't feel much of the carbonation, but overall a good feel.

Sort of disappointed. Typically like pilseners, and I did like this beer, but it doesn't stand up to my favorite pils'. Tasted good, especially when it warmed a bit, but nothing that will make me rush out and buy it again.

Into a pilsener:

A: clear bubbly yellow body, bubbles really cling to the sides of the glass, two finger white foamy head rises and leaves a fair amount of nice foamy lacing in its wake and then gently falls

S: grassy, little bit of hay, corn and light hops, but a strong presence of malts comes through as well

T: all previously mentioned flavors combine in a semi-sweet sort of way but comes across fairly light, slight sweet corn aftertaste and a sticky malty finish

M: light, sessionable, carbonation seems really light (under-carbonated a bit, hmmm....unsure)

O: mostly average Czech Pilsener, nothing to scream about, but would probably have again perhaps with food

Had this on tap at Legal Harborside. This was a decent pilsner for a nice warm summer say. The taste was very crisp and light. The appearance was a bit hazy for a pilsner, but it still looked tasty. No real taste in my opinion other than a touch of malt, which is kinda nice sometimes. The scent was a touch dank, so not my favorite part of this beer. Not my favorite pilsner, but a nice effort.

It comes in a golden yellow color with a yellowish head.

The aroma has grassy hops and some lemon.

The flavor has a nice grassy flavor and slight bitterness. There's a bit of spice in there. However, there is a wheat or corn sweetness with the malt character. It's quite malty.

It does not have the cleanness as the Czech pilsners that I prefer. It's quite a decent beer, but lacks the lager cleanness that I prefer.
