Pours a dark opaque brown with a tan head.
Smells of roasted coffee beans and hints of cocoa.
Very smokey taste, like hickory firewood, along with some bitter hop character and mild coffee flavors.
Medium to full body with a tingle of carbonation.
Good unique porter; I love smokey porters. This one is quite good if you like that sort of thing. Would certainly have this again.

Pours very black with brown hues
Generous head that leaves a quarter inch head that sticks around. Decent Lacing
Smell - Dark roasty malts with a very slightl sweet smell with some chocolates mixed around in there.
Hello Guiness. First comes the sweetness which hits you straight away then disappears just as fast. Then come the dark roasted malt. Tastes strikingly similar to Guiness. A tad heavier though.
Leaves that roasted malt flavor lingering with a slightly syrupy soda type sweetness mixed in somewhere.
This is probably Carolina Brewery's second best beer behind their Flagship IPA.

On tap at the brewpub in Chapel Hill.
Dark brown in color with a nice lasting tan head.
Roast and dark chocolate on the aroma, with a hint of cardboard that has become a common theme in many Carolina Brewery beers I've had.
Slight vinous notes and cardboard on the flavor with a roasty and chocolatey malt base.
Rather dry with medium body and average carbonation.
The description mentions that this kind of beer was originally called "entire butt," and after drinking this beer I can understand why. Just kidding, but still it was below average.

Sampled on tap at the brewery.
An easy drinking, smooth and flavorful beer. It's quite dark and has a creamy consistency. The malts have some nice variety and all of the elements work well together.
Nothing wrong with this one. It really hit the spot.

The 4th in a series of beers sampled at the brewpub. I was pretty pissed about the 3rd beer (see their Flagship IPA) so upon receiving this one...
Poured a deep dark brown, but closer to black in the lighting. Hint of garnet and ruby in the edges. Nice thick tan head that kept well and laced well. I hope looks aren't deceiving...
A good dose of biscuit, touch of burnt toast, cream, and coffee. Well, this is a rather pleasant nose. Nice blend of caramel and even a bit of ashiness in there too. Albeit a bit mild in assertiveness, but it really is a pleasant aroma. The flavors are just as nice and well balanced. A hint of grainy sweetness adds to the complexity, of which I'm a fan. Finishes neither sweet nor dry, although it leans towards the dry side. Wonderful toasted grains throughout. Rich and creamy body with a slight bite in the carbonation. Maybe they could dial it down just a touch, but otherwise, quite good.
So good, in fact, I bought a pint of it after tasting it! Well done!

A small, hazelnut-brown head fizzles gently over a dark opaque body with a barely-visible red glow around the edges, leaving little lacing.
The smell is ridden with hops. Oats, bready tones, honey, and other sweetly-tinged aromas waft out like warm sweet rolls or fruit breads.
The word that comes to mind at the first taste is "creamy." A lingering sweetness and delightfully tangy hops complete the spread. Minimal bitterness is apparent. The finish is smooth.
This is dessert in a glass!

Picked up a growler today and I gotta say I was really impressed.Poured a near opaque black,a tinge of ruby was present when held up to the light,a creamy one finger light mocha colored head atop.Roasty aromas with some vanilla and molasses mainly,a slight nuttiness comes through as well.A full creamy mouthfeel gently coats the mouth, roasty coffee notes hit up front with vanilla and sharp earth in the finish. Not overly sweet with good roast,a very nice porter to be had.

Served out of a growler into a standard pint glass.
A: dark brown to black, slight head that faded quickly
S: malty, roasted, with hints of chocolate
T: roasted grains with the hop bitterness at the end. resembled drinking a rich, dark coffee.
MF: right balance of carbonation, medium bodied.
Drinkability: this is a good oatmeal porter. i'll definitely be buying this again.

I stopped by Whole Foods in Raleigh on Tuesday and the Carolina growlers were the same old same old so I abstained and got some dinner instead. Friday I stopped by again and fresh Oatmeal porter did I find. Excellent. Pours close to jet with a cola rim at the bottom and a dense tan head with tiny tight bubbles. Nose is heavy on the chocolate malt with a delicious roasted or toasted quality.
Definitely an oatmeal stout quality to this porter with that delicious sour note to the thick melange of dark malts. A nice medium body carries this along and makes this very drinkable despite the flavor onslaught. Impressively easy to drink and easily the best from this brewery I've had so far.

Growler from Weaver Street Market in Carrboro, found amongst a number of other offerings from Carolina Brewery , poured into a pint glass yields an opaque ebony body, utterly impervious to even direct sunlight, capped with two fingers of extremely fine-bubbled light khaki foam that retains nicely and laces the glass at the sip lines.
Smell is malty with a hearty oat note and a tinge of honey.
Taste is rich and sweet with a warm, semi-seco oatiness and both caramel and dry malt flavors. There is a slightly metallic, earthy, dry component that gives the drink a gritty, dusty note.
Light medium- bodied, silky and slick, this is a really surprisingly nice drink on a very hot day. So good and cold and refreshing I've poured myself a second, and have a greedy eye on thirds!

Picked up a growler from Sam's in Durham, NC. Poured into a Guinness pint glass. I tried this once at a concert, enjoyed it immensely, and reviewed from memory (don't let the Bro's know!), so I figured I should cover it more in-depth in this review.
For a growler sitting on a refridgerated shelf for who knows how long, the pour produced a decent amount of tan foam. The head quickly recedes to a ring of tiny bubbles, and the seal brown body transitions to a cola hue at the edges. Aroma is full of nutty chocolate, vanilla oats, roasted malt, and a hint of ground coffee. A small, musky hop note tries to balance the malt presence.
Flavor is quite good: a pronounced coffee bitterness hits first, making me wonder if they added some java to secondary. The smoothness of the oats is out-competed by a decently high carbonation level and a lingering hop/coffee bitterness. I guess for the style (american porter), it makes sense. I'd like to see how this compares side-by-side with CB's Oatmal Stout. All in all, this is still a great beer, but I liked it a little more when it was fresh from the draught (see below).

appearance: The beer is a deep, black-brown in color. The mocha colored head that sits atop the beer exhibits nice retention throughout.
smell: Roasted barley upfront with some aromas of the toasted oats. Some muddy hop aromas. Not extremely exciting, but good.
mouthfeel: The carbonation is at the medium level, and the body a full medium. The oats come through in the form of a slightly creamy mouthfeel.
taste: The flavors are primarily of roasted barley with a light malt sweetness. Some light creamy, lactic flavors. There's a moderate nondescript hop flavor and a nice level of bitterness in the finish.
drinkability: easy...not terribly complex on the nose or the tongue, but a damn solid porter
