12oz bottle served in a snifter.
L - lightly hazed amber/orange color with a beige head that thinned to a ring and left a few trails of lacing.
S - sweet dark fruit aroma with a light scent of floral hops.
T - mainly sweeter flavors of dates, raisins, figs with some earthy undertones and some drying bittering right before a sticky sweet taste on the lips.
F - medium bodied with good carbonation for the style.
D - it was quite enjoyable, I look forward the their 50th Anniversary Ale.

Bought this about a year ago, and I've been taking real good care of it ever since. Folks told me to age it for a while, so I did.
Pours ruddy. Hazy red, nearly headless.
Smells more like an old ale than a strong. Not that there's really a formal difference between the two, just that one is an unclassifiable, strong beer and the other is an unclassifiable, strong beer that's been aged. Hmm... Anyhow, pleasant fruit nodes from the thick malt, and some generic-smelling hops are still present.
Tastes like nicely aged, fruity malt, lightly bitter hops, and sweet yeast. It's old, but the age brings everything together quite nicely. Starts outs with nodes of plums and apples, moves into a lemony yeast flavor, ends on a node of old, bittersour hops.
Ladies and gentlemen, this beer was meant to be aged. Because of this, it don't taste like a regular big beer. Instead, it's a shining example of a neglected style.

12oz bottle from Capone's into a Bell's glass.
25th is a amber shaded beer with some bronze tints here and there. A fair amount of head on top about an inch up of tightly piled dense off white foam. Streaks of head on the glass.
Smell is of a big amber ale that is quite malty in fact. Malt is european variety toasted with bread. Hops are not significant but up there with this fresh bottle, they will surely fade soon. Some fruits and caramel as well.
Getting around to it 25th is a pretty simple beer, nothing ballsy, just beer no gimmicks. A big amber ale (if you will) with malts at the forefront. While it 'may' not be something to age, it fits for this time of season. Big malts, earthy hops, some faint caramel, apples, plums, cotton candy.
Feel is about medium with a fair amount of carb. Bell's always seems to nail the feel dept with appropriate carb. The alcohol only seeps through a bit and adds to the richness of this beer. A slight warmth.
All in all a good and simple beer. I drank it pretty quick, it did not knock my socks off though, but I was satisfied none the less.

Well, it's the sixth bottle of a 6-pack that I had unrealistically high hopes for. I've had a wide variety of thoughts about this beer while working through the previous 5 bottles the past several weeks. This is the final bottle of the six, and with it I tell this tale...
It looks good. A reddish-copper color, something about it sort of candy-like, in its glossy, jeweled hard-candy appearance. The head is dirty while and fairly creamy, and while it's not huge, it sticks and stays.
At 8.5%, and considering the style, you'd think this would have even a little alcohol in the nose, but no, it's just pure malt/hop teamwork, with the malt taking the lead. Musty, toffee-like, even tea-like, it recalls a mutated Scotch ale, but the grassy hops brings it back to the states. A candy-like sweetness works its way in, reminding of various Belgian strong darks, so this is clearly a true American strong ale in its true "catch-all" meaning. And that's just the nose I'm talking about.
Brown sugar, caramel and a strange green grass astringency fight it out on the tongue. Watery herbal tea, toffee, mild alcohol warmth and extremely faint smoke tuck in under the main level. Burnt sugar, toffee and molasses work into the finish, where the grassy, strained hops character continues to lurk. The feel is a compromise between fizzy, bubbly carbonation, buoyant slickness and a smooth, round creaminess. As with the flavor, it performs well but never totally stuns like I want it to.
All in all, this beer pushes enough buttons to make me look forward to each sip, yet falls a little short of expectation considering 1) the brewery, 2) the style, and 3) the occasion. Thanks to a very well-incorporated 8.5%, it remains enjoyable and drinkable, despite weak spots. I wanted so much more from this--Bell's is one of my favorite breweries--but it's probably only disappointing due to my impossibly high expectations. C'est la vie...

This beer pours an amber-brown color. The head is one inch in height, and recedes quickly into a small cap of lacing. The aroma is of grapefruit, orange, pine, with a hint of caramel underneath. The taste is hoppy with a lot of pine resin, and some fresh grapefruit. The mouthfeel is medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation, and a smooth texture. Overall, this is a nice beer that I would happily drink again.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a thick stemmed DFH snifter.
Batch: 9871
A: Pours a slightly hazy, russet color. Perched on top is 1/2 a finger of creamy, yet short lived, khaki colored foam. Lace sheeting was plentiful and the collar was quite bubbly.
S: Caramel and toffee dominate with a faint suggestion of green apple. Piney hops arrive a little late to the party, riding on the back of some obvious alcohol presence.
T: Much like above, but with the central theme here being a persistant alcohol flavor. A little too persistant for this beer in my opinion.
M: Likeable enough, but with too much alcohol burn/astringency for my taste. Finishes dry and spicy.
D: Good but not great. Certainly not worthy of something so special as commemorating a 25th anniversary.

12 ounce bottle. Pours clear red orange color with a really dense 2 finger off white head with insane retention and insane lacing. Aromas of citrus, caramel, some fruits, and oak. Taste of rye, citrus, and caramel, with some fruit notes. Some slight bitterness on the finish. Creamy medium body and carbonation. Alcohol is no where to be seen despite 8.5%. Overall this was pretty interesting stuff, but another tasty brew from Bells for me!

Poured into a snifter. Batch 9871 (though probably just one batch of this).
3.5 A: Hazed amber color. One finger of beige creamy head with poor retention and a small ring of lacing left behind.
4.0 S: Smells like a barleywine-type DIPA. Rich caramel and toffee, minorly bready, raisin and prune fruitiness, and some yeastiness. Hops are flowery, piney, and citrusy with some pineapple and orange. Good here.
4.0 T: Pretty much the perfect mix of maltiness and hoppiness and neither feels at all out of place. Caramel, toffee, figs, prune, and raisin from the malts. Moderate, but soft, bitterness, pine, grapefruit, orange, and some herb from the hops. Put together well with a low breadiness and yeastiness. Sometimes beers like this can be overly bready and/or yeasty and the result isn't good, but this doesn't have that problem. A touch of booziness throughout. I'd say it actually seems like it's closer to 10%.
4.0 M: Heavier medium to heavy body. Good moderate carbonation. Good creaminess and smooth.
4.0 D: Good brew. It tastes like a bigger beer than it is and has a booziness to accompany it. However, I think it works well overall. It's a very good mix of hoppiness and maltiness, with neither dominant. I wouldn't mind if they made this again under a different name, but alas, I know they won't.

This was a tough con to run down in the Twin Cities, & it took a while to finally have a six-pack in hand (from a generic, municipal liquor store of all places). Time for it to stop gathering dust & start pleasing me.
Pour is beautiful. If sterling silver turned into a translucent, clear red, it would look like this beer. Smell is pleasing...& borders on the undefinable. Very fruity, watermelon sweet. I like it, but it's completely unexpected.
Bell's 25th Anniversary Ale is akin to no beer I've tasted before, & maybe unrelated to one I'll taste again. No one taste is dominant. The first one that I notice is the gentle hops, obviously lobotimized, but bearing flowers & wearing a citrusy perfume. The fruitiness reasserts itself quickly, still watermelony, very sweet. Malts are distinct on the downslope. Sticky, sweet, coating, with a dose of alcohol. This feels more like a barleywine than anything else, but defies categorization on my tongue. The fruit plate throws my palate loopy every time I try to dive in for another look-see.
Not really sure how to judge this. Good, but very odd. At the very least, salut to Bell's for 25 years of great beer & taking a risk with this one!

Poured from a 12oz bottle into my Dogfish snifter. It poured a deep amber/orange color color with a thin white lacing barely covering the top of the beer. The head clung to the edges of the glass and left a bit of lacing as I drank it.
The aroma has a sweeter, malty flavor with some honey and caramel sweetness along with some nutty, toffee like flavors. A bit of a floral like hoppiness comes through in it as well.
The taste shows a lot of sweetness to it. I get a honey, malty sweet flavor throughout the beer. It has a lighter, more floral hoppiness with some citrus presence as well. A little bit of the caramel and bready flavors come through as well.
The mouthfeel is medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Drinkability is decent but not great. It really showed off the malty Michigan barley, but could have been a little more balanced overall. It felt a little sweet at times, especially in the finish. Pretty good beer overall, but not a great one.

Received this one as an extra in a recent trade, and was really looking forward to try it. Although it was pretty enjoyable, after some of the beers I've had from Bells, I was expecting a little more to celebrate a quarter of a century in business. Medium amber color, with a decent white head. Big bubblegum, pineapple and mango aromas foreshadow a fruity, and somewhat disjointed beer. Good, certainly, but nothing special.

A - Muddy amber, nice head falls fast to ring. Not much lace.
S - Bready, heady goodness. Deep malt and my favorite thing about this beer.
T - Malty, nice, but thinner than smell suggests.
M - Again, thinner and less complex than I thought. Good carb, ok balance.
D - Fort eh ABV, very easy to drink.

Thanks to Mike for this bottle.
A: Pours a slightly hazy copper color with a just off-white head upon pouring. Quick reduction to a very thin layer on top and a more foamy ring of foam around the edge. Not much lacing.
S: Some caramelized malt and a hint of citrus hops. There is a bit if a buttery aroma on the finish though.
T: Lots of sugary caramel and some toffee with a bit of fruit as well. Some light fig and raisin as well as a little bit of grassy hops.
M: Medium to full bodied, has a slight syrupy feel to it.
O: Not a bad beer, but nothing really stood out for me.

12 ounces of liquid deliciousness, sent by awesome BA hoppymeal, poured to a shaker pint (Oregon Craft Beer Month). Bottle is labeled with a fairly mundane '25th Anniversary Ale' front, Batch #9871 on the back.
A: Mildly hazy auburn, a coppery tint. Clear enough that a plethora of steady bubbles are on full display. Starts with a pile of ivory creaminess, a full finger that tapers over a couple minutes to a scant film, lolling lace.
S: Bold and aromatic, a malty sweetness that drifts several feet from the glass. Candied fruit, a little orange zest and spicing. Cakebread sweetness
T: Zesty spice and tangy pine/resin, married with a fairly sugar-sweet dose of toffee and dark caramel. The more sips I take, the more brash the grassy hops become, a cloying bitterness starts to build. Sipping tends to ward of the depths of rawer flavors, but this suffers from some imbalance.
M: Toasty warmth right how - wow, I'm surprised by how much fusel burn there is right now! Drinks like more than its 8.5% girth; I am often more apt to remark that alcohol is well-hidden in a beer, but that's not the case here. Fairly creamy feel, but lingering spiced burn. What's surprising the most: feel is relatively thin.
D: Despite a heated feel, this sure is one I'd like to try again. Alas, one is all I have - so unless another bottle (or more) comes along, I'll never know what this Anniversary Ale will be like with some age on it (because that could be quite wonderful). As is, a pretty good beer that needs more age and mellowing...
Not among my favorites from the good folks at Bell's, but I still wish them the best. Happy 25th!

$3.10 for a 12oz single @ Jacks. Batch 9871. 8.5% ABV. Per the website, "packaged August 12, 2010", but no ingredients listed. The bottle states it is brewed with Michigan grown barley malt.
Pours out to a clear medium amber, forming a sticky, resinous yellow head with excellent retention and thick sheets of lacing. Carbonation is very mild. Minimal sediment in the bottle. The aroma opens with what smells like Centennial hops, fruity with a hint of mango and pineapple, followed by vanilla, cherries, apple juice, and when swirled, a little sour milk. Mouthfeel is thick, soft, and syrupy with a dense body. This beer falls in the Old ale/American Strong Ale category for those who are wondering. The taste begins with the piney hops, and is followed by an odd malty sourness/bitterness combo with figs and dates. It's hard to put my finger on it, but the malt is definitely sour and the bitterness has a chemical/metallic component to it that is very peculiar. Aftertaste of tobacco, green wood and pine.
Hrmmm, this is a weird beer. I expect better quality from Bell's, let alone a 25th anniversary brew. This one is nothing to get excited about, and I'm definitely not inclined to buy another.

Reddish amber color with a small head that quickly went away. Just a little spotty lacing is left on the glass. Not the liveliest beer around. Aroma of sweet malt with hints of vanilla and toffee. The hops are well hidden with maybe a touch of floral and fruit. The alcohol is also well hidden. The flavor is really well done. Plenty of malt upfront that gives a sweet caramel base. But the hops come alive. The hops give plenty of floral and tropical fruit notes. Bitterness is getting up there but is in balance with the malt. A little warmth from the alcohol in the finish. Body is a little larger than medium. Carbonation is sufficient to give some lift to this somewhat heavy beer. A very interesting, well balanced beer. Well done. Here is to the next 25 years.

Bell's 25th Anniversary Ale is a copper in color. It's relatively clear, and backlighting reveals a mix of red and orange highlights. Nice color. The head is off-white in color, and is lucky if it stands a finger tall. Retention is short, and lacing was on the lighter side. Eh. It trailed off a bit there.
The nose is interesting and surprising. Caramel malts seem to be the base. It smells a little sweet, but it's not overbearing. I'm getting a healthy dark fruit presence. Raisin and plum are most notable. It definitely smells grainy and full of barley. It is quite earthy smelling throughout. There's a toasty scent that I can't quite put my finger on. Alcohol is blended well. If hops are here, I'm not getting them. Smells good...and interesting to boot.
The flavor isn't quite as good as the nose. It's definitely interesting, but just doesn't perform quite as well here. Caramel malts are flavorful and slightly sweet initially. They're complemented by a nice dark fruity presence. It is plum and raisin. It's full of barley and earthy/grainy flavors. Honestly, they seem to be a little at odds with the malty base. It's not bad by any stretch, but I can't say they work together well. It is slightly toasty and yeasty on the tail. Alcohol is masked well. Finishes with a blast of barley, dark fruit, and caramel.
25th Anniversary Ale has a medium body. Due to its modest carbonation, it has a smooth feel. Drinkability is above average. The flavor's alright. Not bad. It's not great either. I believe a single bottle in a sitting is just enough for me.
I had really high expectations for Bell's 25th Anniversary Ale. Honestly, it doesn't quite meet them, but that's not to say it's a bad beer. The flavor's alright, but is a little barley/grain heavy. Less would be more. But, it certainly has a unique flavor that I couldn't have anticipated. I believe it's well worth a try. Leave it to Bell's to craft something unique and different for its 25th Anniversary. I do love that aspect. Happy 25th!

A: This poured a hazy copper with some light tan head.
S: It smelled like sweet honey and light citrus, with some floral hops. Nice, but not much depth or boldness.
T: It tasted like sweet honey and citrus hops, with some roasted barley and lingering florals. It had a clean and bitter aftertaste.
M: It was slightly thick with moderate carbonation. Surprisingly thin for a Bell's beer.
D: This was a good beer with nice hops that were well balanced by the malt, like a strong amber ale. The body was ok and the alcohol was well hidden, so it was very easy to drink. But ultimately there was nothing special or unique about this beer. It was good, but not nearly what I expected from a special release anniversary ale from such a solid brewery.

Poured from 12oz brown bottle into a Duvel tulip. Batch 9871 on back label. Single purchased at Wine Warehouse (Charlottesville, VA) for $3.00.
A: Ruby-amber with sticky 1-2 finger off-white head, tightly bubbled, with good retention and scattered lace down the glass.
S: Extremely floral and fruity aroma with a honeysuckle quality. Aromatic hops is right with citrus, herbal, and spruce combining with fruity sweet caramel malts.
T: The flavor is not well-mixed with sharp sweetness and complex hops that produce an estery brew which is as floral as any I have efver had. The hops are hefty with herbal tones, but the spruce and herbal notes are very strong too. It unfortunately overwhelms the subtleties of the malts.
M: The coating quality is the most prominent and the low carbonation provides a very smooth feel overall. The aftertaste is very sweet and floral.
D: A good not great brew with lots of complexity which doesn't always work well together.

12oz bottle into a DFH Signature glass pours a slightly hazy dark orange with a thin eggshell head that lasts as a thin layer and leaves a few rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma is slight burnt caramel and toffee with some pine hops and dried fruits. The taste is an interesting blend of very sweet caramel malts with a decent balance of pine hops, but it's all overshadowed by a strong alcohol presence. The beer is a bit on the heavy side with certainly noticeable alcohol. This is an interesting beer, one that I hope will improve with age, but as for this tasting, not one I would expect to commemorate a such a momentous anniversary.

A-pours a hazy reddish grapefruit color with an off white head leaving a pretty sizable lace.
S-the nose is strange, notes of dough and bread up front, some spicy rye aromas, hints of pine and a decent bit of ctirusy hops with some model airplane glue behind. the glue is so wierd, not the part of getting high from it (the acetone), just the gluey smell.
T-the taste is also different, light notes of dough and bread, spicy rye, piney and hints of wood, a nice bit of citrussy hops, peach, grapefruit, mango. there is a light soft bitterness but not strong or lingering.
M-smooth and syrupy feel, good carbonation, crisp slightly grainy finish. its actually rather creamy on the palate with a good medium body.
D-this is quite tasty, the airplane glue scared me a little but it actually seemed part of the aroma. the flavors are good, this seems to have some spicy rye in to me. well balanced, interesting beer!

12oz. bottle poured into a snifter.
(A)- Pours a clear reddish caramel colored hue. Produced a good eggshell colored foamy head that stuck around for awhile.
(S)- A fruity aroma. A caramel-like fig and butterscotch. Reminds me of a holiday fruitcake with some cranberries. Parts of it remind me of a Barleywine, other parts make me think Old Ale. A bit dry and woody at the end; almost pine-like.
(T)- Very similar to the smell. A fig-like caramel sweetness with an underlying dry wood/pine bite. Its like a fresh barleywine/old ale mixed with an aged one; it has that fresh bite some barleywines have, but has a malt bill that reminds me of some aged variations I have had in the past. Hoppy but sweet also.
(M)- A good carbonation level and balance. Sweet, but hoppy also in a very woody profile. However, it feel a bit more stronger than 8.5% ABV; I could be fooled into thinking it is nearning 11%.
(D)- I like the uniqueness of this one for the style it is under. A good combo of malt and dry wood bite. I look forward to what 6 months of age does to this.

Thanks to Dhren1979 for this extra, cheers Doug!
A: Pours a golden amber with excellent clarity and a single finger offwhite foamy head which dissipates over the next ten minutes leaving a central cap of the same. No evident lacing.
S: Caramel, toffee, malt backbone. Initially lots of metallic notes (bad). Not much hops. However, maybe the hops are in this observation: for some reason this reminds me of pineapple flavored gummy bears....weird.
T: Alcohol was not covered very well here IMO. The malts take second base to fusel that makes my jaw clench. Over the top of this is a great malt blend, sweet and enjoyable. Hints of tea-like flavors.
M: Smooth and slightly creamy. Lower carb. Leaves film in mouth. Not bad.
D: The beer definitely has potential. And I really like it, I will look for more (as extras).

A - The beer pours quite dark, a sort of reddish ebony hue. The head is tan and frothy, and leaves a bit of lace.
S - The aroma is buttery, slightly toasty, and has a tinge of finished leather smell. I don't really dig it.
T - The flavor is unusual, certainly, featuring abstractions of tastes like Fruit Loops, Starburst candies, and, again, a leathery impression. It is much more interesting and enjoyable in the gustatory sense than it is for the olfactory.
M - Feels a bit sticky, and that doesn't help things at all. The carbonation is a bit aggressive too.
D - Wow this is a bizarre brew; it has nice flavor aspects but it just never seems to coalesce.
