Bottle dated 2/9/12. Poured into a New Belgium tulip. Appearance is clear dark reddish-brown with typical moderate carbonation and a thin head that had excellent retention. The nose was faint and slightly sweet with primarily toasted malt and a very, very subtle vanilla note.

The taste is very spot-on and traditional for this style and not over-the-top or otherwise interpretative at all. The beer has a medium body and a nice soft, bready, malty sweetness that develops to mild raisin and figgy flavors towards the back of the palate. Hop profile is extremely mild, as per the style. The beer is very easy-drinking and the alcohol is undetectable. It has no objectionable qualities whatsoever.

Overall, this beer lacks the complexity of the top-shelf dopplebocks, but it is a nice entry from an outstanding brewer. Everything about it says ``traditional'', right down to the (blank)-``or'' name that dopplebocks typically have.

12 0z bottle poured into a tulip
Bottled 1-22-13

A- Pours a viscous murky amber brown color. Little head to speak of.

S- Massive caramel. A ton of fig and raisins. A german yeast strain. A syrupy smelling beer.

T- A big caramel flavor at first. A candy sugar flavor and a yeasty undertone. A huge dark fruit profile to this beer. A lot of figs, and plums in the beer. A grainy, yeasty spicyness under the beer main flavors. A fairly simple flavor profile but well balanced.

M- A thick beer. Syrupy in the mouth. Medium carbonation, semi sweet. Surprisingly easy to drink for me.

O- A solid Doppelbock, nothing more. A fine example of the style but not one to seek out.

Poured into a snifter.

A: Hazy red-brown with one-finger, fizzy, off-white head that lasted half a minute. Not much lacing.

S: Caramel malt and fruit.

T: Moderate to high sweetness and light bitterness. Caramel malt. Figs and other dark fruit. Toasty finish.

M: Medium bodied with fizzy carbonation. Thin feeling.

O: Pretty good Doppelbock. There are better ones out there.
