Style | ABV
Russian Imperial Stout |  10.50% ABV

Availability: Winter. bottle (1667), on-tap (76), cask (14), growler (3), nitro-tap (2)

Notes:
Expedition Stout offers immensely complex flavors crafted specifically with vintage aging in mind, as its profile will continue to mature and develop over the years. A huge malt body is matched to a heady blend of chocolate, dark fruits, and other aromas. Intensely bitter in its early months, the flavors will slowly meld and grow in depth as the beer ages.

12 oz Bottle poured into a Pint glass. Bottled on 10-22-12

Appearance: Pitch black with a 1/2" tan head that vanishes quickly leaving only a ring.

Smell: Chocolate, coffee and (unexpected) hops.

Taste: Very well balanced with the chocolate flavor coming through first then the coffee then a pleasant hoppy bitterness. The bitterness from the roasted malt works very well with the bitterness from the hops contrasted against some sweet chocolate.

Mouthfeel: Rich and creamy on the palate and clean on the finish.

Overall: Delicious stout, unique it having a hop profile which is noticeable in a roasted malt forward beer. It deserves it's excellent reputation.

On tap at Fox River House in Appleton, WI

Appearance - Poured a night black, little to no carbonation, slight tan head that didn't linger long

Smell - Sweet chocolate mixed with wet hops and roasted malts

Taste - Wow what a mix of flavors for a stout. Off the bat a massive thick malt bill with loads of chocolate steal the show but then it transitions into an almost salty sweet roasted malt flavor that carries you right into a dank hop flavor that finishes with a sweet milk chocolate aftertaste

Mouthfeel - The mouthfeel is thick but not quite to the level of being chewy, but almost

Overall - This is a fantastic stout. One of the five best I have ever had and personally I think it is a better offering than Bell's highly acclaimed Black Note Stout. If you are a fan of stouts you have to try this one. Simply amazing

Poured from a 12oz bottle. Pours jet black. Very thick, light brown head, good carbonation and lacing.

Nose is heavy on roasted malt. Dark Chocolate. Smokey smell, wet burnt wood.

Taste is very bitter. Smoked meat, peat flavor. Heavy roasted malt, coffee.

Mouthfeel is full bodied. Creamy finish.

Overall, this is a great beer, but a bit too bitter for my taste.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a tulip glass. Bottle dated 10/22/12.

Pours pitch black with a 1/2 inch light brown head.

Smells of milk chocolate and coffee. More assertive roast than recent stouts I've had.

Strong bitterness for a stout. Definitely within acceptable range, but the IBU's and roast level work well together to add a strong edge to the sweetness present in a beer of this size.

Mouthfeel is pretty full but the bitterness cuts that a little earlier than other interpretations.

Overall a very tasty beer and I'm glad I had one relatively fresh. I'll try again in a year to see how some of the roast and bitterness has mellowed.
