Poured from a very cold bottle dated 7/10/12 into a Bell's snifter.

Poured black as night with no head to speak of. Nice oily brown lacing that slid back into the beer quickly.

Licorice smell was prominent with slight hint of some fruit like prune maybe.

Nice amount of bitterness surrounding licorice sweetness. Very tasty!

Mouthfeel was smooth but much thinner than expected from the color & oily appearance.

The taste impressed me enough to want to try another one poured a little more aggressively.

Deep onyx black brilliance it poured with a great deal of visible carbonation. The carbonation did not help to build a head but instead collared in a fizzy brown layer.

The scent is very nice with milky, creamy lactose, Graham cracker, weak dry chocolate malt and espresso.

The taste and feel are very intertwined as the airy, watery feel seems to erase the start and finish of a charred coffee taste. There is some dryness, to taste and feel, and some malty, cracker like body. I feel like I'm missing something, as if there are variances I was meant to discover but than the palate is wiped clean and I miss it.

Overall, I prefer more heft and body in a stout and I shouldn't work too hard to find the flavors. The taste is there but just dial down the bubbles and we could have something truly good.

A: jet black, tan head. Good retention. Good lacing.
S: roasty, melanoidins, roasted marshmallow, no hops.
T: disclaimer: I hate licorice. Roasted malt, but not astringent or overly bitter, some bitterness in the finish which balances out the forward malty sweetness. Some smoke, some vanilla, marshmallow. I like it a lot.
M: to style, medium to almost heavy body, slightly velvety.

O: drink one.

The beer comes in a black color with a gentle head.

The aroma has roasted malt and sweet chocolate.

The flavor has roasted malt, chocolate, slight licorice. It’s not overpowering and you’ll just that that flavor in the back end.

The body is actually a bit light.

The beer for me is too toned down. I prefer Deschuttes Obsidian Stout with its bigger roasted malt character and deeper flavors. In the end, it’s a well made beer and quite delicious. However, just a good stout.
